Mix master mike was, and maybe still is using a wah pedal for guitars wired into the turntables. Which gave him the ability to do tweak scratches...part of the reason his shit is so wild. He makes reference to it on a voice message on the beginning of the album version of this song.

This is back when hip hop was fun and raw. Parties were so fun in the late 80's through the 90's...
Much of what the Beasties do is an homage to the very early days of NY Hip Hop. So in the early days the DJ was the star, the MCs (they were not even yet Emcees) were just the garnish. This is a shout out to that. They are stationary in the studio like all the other instruments until the DJ comes in, when he starts they animate and when he is finished they go back to being stationary like every other instrument, the DJ is done using them.
That makes sense. Like Run DMC and Fresh Prince making songs about their DJs mad skills. How many record players do you think they've torn up through the years lol. I can't believe they said it started early to mid 70s at house parties. Revolutionary artists back then probably couldn't have envisioned How big hip hop would get!
For all the young Katz out there. This is what a real DJ does. Not just hook up their MacBook and hit play. Watching Mix master mike do his thing, while switching out multiple records, all while literally not skipping a beat is truly a glorious thing to see. Real old school DJ’s were the shit. Not just anyone with $4000 could be one. It took real talent

Hip Hop originated in the Bronx, New York. Kool Herc is the godfather of scratching records over beats and rhyming. Afrika Bambatta and Grandmaster Flash were also in that early group. This takes me back to my childhood in Brooklyn. DJ's used to battle outside and rhyme over break beats. Jazzy Jeff is indeed one of the greatest DJ's ever but if you talk to him, he was inspired by many, many New York DJ's that came before him. The Beastie Boys were one of the pioneers of hip hop. This music came from the streets and pure talent. MC's and a DJ. Period. Best rhymes win. None of that auto-tuned mess on the radio right now.
Facts... Ol' Fab Five Freddy was out there bringing the art to the streets too. It was a cool time to be alive. All that culture and talent creating a whole new movement. Cutting, scratching, rapping, popping, locking, breaking, and street art. The whole scene just blew up! It's still with us. Always will be.
DJ Mixmaster Mike is a legend. The fact these guys did this live in one take is also what makes this great. The wearing a hood is 2010's hip-hop thing that needs to go away. The Beastie Boys are a forever hip hop that won't.

Nope… it’s all done with moving the record back and forth at variable speeds controlled by hand, while cutting up the sounds with the mixer in the process. That means the motor does not drive the record. It’s all done by hand; no Wah Pedal or other effects whatsoever.

Mike was so good he won one of the biggest DJ competitions so many times that they asked him to stop competing so someone else could win. Absolute legend.

I was going to mention that as well. Mike could pull off with one LP on the board, which would take others to have at least two, and then some would need to flip an album to match. Legend.
The group started out as a pretty badass punk band and crossed over to hip hop in mid 80s. They were definitely another layer added to the beauty of the hip hop culture along with every other rap artists.
They were part of the NY hardcore scene and even though they moved to hip hop they remain a part of the NYHC scene.
That's Mix Master Mike. They did this in a single take. The album version is different. Glad you liked it!

Been a B-Boy fan since the 80s. Me and a buddy of mine got to see them at their last concert at MSG, got a free upgrade to the Budweiser luxury skybox (Thanks forever TB!). F'N EPIC!!!! One of the highlights of my entire life.
I saw them in Philly when they toured for this album. Still one of the best concerts I’ve ever been too at over 200 attended. Tribe Called Quest opened for them. I was 3 rows from the stage, but it was a spinning 360 stage so you always had a different view. Was fucking epic

Beastie Boys formed in 1978 and were pioneers in Hip Hop in every way possible. The genre was defined by them and a few others.
We got lucky when I was a kid..we had a music shop that carried all the east and west coast artists and indie ones as well. Everything from the beatnuts to beastie to krs1. The 80's and 90's were my favorite era of hip hop.
They're just fun. They take the craft far more seriously than they take themselves.

I graduated in 1987. This was one of the first fusions between rock and rap that got us all listening to hip hop. We had the best music. No thugs and wannabe gangsters. Just lots of fun and anti authority. I wish rap was still like this. Being creative and having fun. Beastie boys and run dmc combined the best of both worlds and really made rap main stream. It was a good time to be a teenager. Hard to belive an ordinary man in his 50s like me used to rock to the boombox and play the beasties loud! Us old folks were the shit.
This "live" version is so much better than the studio recording. They really are great performers. On the video DVD collection, they have a dedicated camera for each of the B-Boys, it's pretty cool. You can see that it's legit a single take.
My brother, he scratches that entire track from one record. There is no track, he creates it and never loops to a second track or uses a second record. He scratches the whole thing in one take, from one record, on one table. He is the instrument. This man is a master. There is a list that can, but he could back when VERY few could. Jazzy Jeff was among them as well. Hip Hop Royalty.
Actually, Mix Master Mike and DJ Z Trip thank Jazzy J as their pioneer into scratching. Jazzy Jeff started out on Soul Sonic Force, so the guys around that era more likely. The man's record collection is something like 500,000 strong.

Mixmaster Mike is a legend. He was in the first all DJ group (turtablists) Invisible Scratch Piklz. He was the one who went in front of a board and got turntables recognized as a musical instrument. He stopped competing DMC (scratch competitions) because he would win every year. Legend.

Grammy Award winner Mix Master Mike's many accomplishments include a 3 time consecutive win of the DMC World title, a win of the 1992 New Music Seminar DJ Battle (where he became the first West Coast DJ to win the title of World Champion), and being inducted into the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame in 2012 with the Beastie Boys.

scrubbing as some people called it back in the late 70's. Herbie Hancock used a DJ
to do some scratching on "Rockit" in 1983. I believe he won a grammy for the single
and video of the year at the MTV awards.

I started listening to Beasties in 7th grade with their first album. Ever since my buddies and I got all their albums the day released. I once drove two hours one night just to get the Hello Nasty album when it was released. They are iconic.
They started as a punk band. Did License to Ill for fun. And it blew up.

My hubby was in San Antone for AF basic and I was in Orlando (Navy), I went home recorded some mastermixes from the radio that weekend, went to dig in the crates (I used to DJ on the weekends on bases with a DJ from Queensbridge that was getting stationed in San Diego with me), stopped by to see him graduate, blessed him with some sounds from home inc. License to Ill cassette and kept it moving to Diego, he went to Travis AFB. He was so happy. People don't realize how much music was exchanged in the military. Dudes that were straight country got to hear Slave and all kinds of music in the dorms, just like brothers that only knew R&B/Hip Hop were exposed to AC/DC and Metallica.

One of the parts that you probably didn't notice is when the dj went in the building he went down about 3 stories. In otherwords, he went 'underground' which was a huge thing back in the day. underground rap was for the serious hip hop head. No one wanted to be commercial or pop cause that didn't get you respect in the hip hop community.

This is what Hip Hop was meant to be , and I do think theres Cat's still out there doing it. Being ready, willing and ABLE to bust out anywhere at any time . No laptop or autotune , just GO. So many of the popular acts are just straight studio creations . I know because I have been in those studios . And it's not just Hip Hop it's all music. The "live" act is 85% pre-recorded . Sounds great, but it doesn't FEEL great. Listening to this you know you are witnessing music being CREATED , no just RE-CREATED

Discovered it by accident too. He was practicing in his bedroom and his mother was banging on the door. His hand was moving the record as he called back to her and he heard this weird sound in his headphones. The rest is history.
