@@LadyIarConnacht I don't think it is meant to be taken in the 100% literal definition. If I'm not mistaken the beating of Rodney King was one of the major influences for this song. There were no burning crosses at his beatdown. I feel burning crosses is more likely a metaphor for racism, or in this song, about oppression and hate of the common man by the powers that be in general. Also as you know Rodney was not killed. The "killing" in the name part is likely also a metaphor for abuse of power, violence, oppression, etc. (and sometimes killing as well). As to who is doing the "killing in the name" recently, I would argue that Trump's gassing of the protesters outside the White House for his Bible photo op a few weeks back is but one good example. George Floyd is another very obvious one.

One of my more favorite RATM stories is when they were invited onto BBC radio to preform this song. They were asked to censor the song, which they did, until Zach De La Rocha decided to actually scream “FUCK YOU I WONT DO WHAT YOU TELL ME,” on public radio for 30 seconds straight. This song was at the top of the British charts for multiple weeks after that performance.

I first participated to the pacific manifestations but the authority you do not have the right to express your opinion. But people continued because it wasn't a good reason to stop they never thought politics would order to shoot on civilians, women, men , kids , old people everybody, the police shoot like assholes thinking : the sheeps are under control. well they were so wrong.. I’m a gen Xer too and for me Punk and alternate rock absolutely shaped my world view. That anger truly was a gift. I still question authority. I home school my kids so they can question things. Watching Mr Video feel the song so viscerally was amazing. It brought tears to my eyes because I know that feeling! Actually this was released in 1992 not long after the Rodney King police brutality incident, but it applies to a whole lot more than just that incident. I'm so glad more people are finding RAtM and their powerful anti-establishment music. This was a joy to watch you experience this moment!
It's shocking to me how well their message AND their music has held up since their first album dropped nearly 30 years ago. The sound is fresh and the message is maybe even more important and timely now than it was then. I remember seeing them live at Lollapalooza and having Zach de la Rocha yelling at the audience to NOT support the corporate oligarchs and their huge mark-ups on merch, ordering people to just take a marker and write "RATM" on their own shirts instead of buying from the vendors at the event, and yet they were SO GOOD that people were buying the Lollapalooza-sanctioned band shirts left and right. RATM was too woke for their audience then and may still be today, who knows?
People burned down a significant amount of Los Angeles as a result. It's not enough to keep the outrage momentum going for a proper reform of the LAPD, but not "angry enough then" is a bit inaccurate, in my opinion.
I grew up in a very white midwest town. When I was 15, one of my friends introduced me to RATM (it was right when Evil Empire came out). CHANGED MY LIFE. They've been one of my very favorite bands for 24 years. They helped make me a better human. **Also wanted to say that if you haven't checked out their live performance in Minneapolis when they were here for the Republican National Convention, please do. The opening song (Bombtrack) they came out in orange prison jumpsuits and black hoods. Best show of my life.

@@LadyIarConnacht I don't think it is meant to be taken in the 100% literal definition. If I'm not mistaken the beating of Rodney King was one of the major influences for this song. There were no burning crosses at his beatdown. I feel burning crosses is more likely a metaphor for racism, or in this song, about oppression and hate of the common man by the powers that be in general. Also as you know Rodney was not killed. The "killing" in the name part is likely also a metaphor for abuse of power, violence, oppression, etc. (and sometimes killing as well).
As to who is doing the "killing in the name" recently, I would argue that Trump's gassing of the protesters outside the White House for his Bible photo op a few weeks back is but one good example. George Floyd is another very obvious one.

rage is a band that captures the essense of rebellion. its about waking up to know that you are in an intellectual prison that keeps you sleeping and blind to the fact that you are not just a slave. you are a prisoner. this song doesnt explain anything. it just chants the moment of realization over and over again. i really enjoyed how you walked yourself through this song. it did exactly as it was supposed to do. this song is about the farmer/farm-animal relationship between a person in america and the government of america. the machine is the military industrial complex that uses you as a battery. the machine is more than a time machine. its "the machine" over time.

Yeah, 11 years ago nothing. RATM was trying to warn us almost 30 years ago and we just weren't angry enough then.
It's shocking to me how well their message AND their music has held up since their first album dropped nearly 30 years ago. The sound is fresh and the message is maybe even more important and timely now than it was then. I remember seeing them live at Lollapalooza and having Zach de la Rocha yelling at the audience to NOT support the corporate oligarchs and their huge mark-ups on merch, ordering people to just take a marker and write "RATM" on their own shirts instead of buying from the vendors at the event, and yet they were SO GOOD that people were buying the Lollapalooza-sanctioned band shirts left and right. RATM was too woke for their audience then and may still be today, who knows?
People burned down a significant amount of Los Angeles as a result. It's not enough to keep the outrage momentum going for a proper reform of the LAPD, but not "angry enough then" is a bit inaccurate, in my opinion.

I grew up in a very white midwest town. When I was 15, one of my friends introduced me to RATM (it was right when Evil Empire came out). CHANGED MY LIFE. They've been one of my very favorite bands for 24 years. They helped make me a better human.
**Also wanted to say that if you haven't checked out their live performance in Minneapolis when they were here for the Republican National Convention, please do. The opening song (Bombtrack) they came out in orange prison jumpsuits and black hoods. Best show of my life.

I grew- up on this band! The 90's was full of activists trying to change our society. Being from a mixed culture myself and being Native American and Mexican indian on my fathers side along with African and french and then white on my mothers side, this band resonated with me because of all the bullying and racist actions I endured growing up by white people. Sad as it sounds that's the truth and how it was growing up in the 90's for me and a lot of other children of color. To love rage against the machine is understatement for me. Their lyrics still ring just as loud and true now as they did back then. I love seeing the new generation finding them out. I'm a mother and my boys grew up understanding and seeing the world for ALL it is. Through life, music and art. Keep the cycle going. Stay WOKE! One love and forever live on RATM!
