Switched to cling wrap and I haven't seen a spot of green since. . was having a real problem with trich developing on my plates, I kept re-evaluating my sterile technique trying to find where I was introducing the contam and I finally looked closely at the my parafilm and noticed all the microtears/cracks that were forming only days after wrapping. In other cases, it wasn't tearing but simply "slipping" up or down the edge of the plate till it was no longer sealing. I tried folding, using wider strips, double, triple wrapping. Stretching looser, stretching tighter. It seemed like I had to use a comically large amount of parafilm to get a realiable seal. Also all the paper backing is just more trash to have to deal with while working.
Shit! I just dropped 38 USD on a 5cmx76m roll of parafilm 😂 it was delivered yesterday FFS. I did look at grafting tape but the way people act like they hold ultimate knowledge can make it hard to discern fact from feels. Thanks for giving your honest opinion Dr Ed!
Finally i can feel justified in throwing out my giant roll of parafilm. Re wrapping plates is the part of transfers that makes me want to not do it so much.
Dang I'm a gardener...never heard of the grafting tape. Would come in clutch when abuse turns to snap crack pop...broken branches. I used electrical tape, always wondered why it helped lock in moisture and help heal the break. Ed1k crosstraing this game. Your insights are truly the best. Don't ever quit Brother Thank You u Rock!!!
Parafilm does have a really good "feel" when you stretch it out. Feels very science-y when I use it. Even when you've set it in your plates and just run your fingers thru the edges it feels nice. Having said that grafting tape/cling wrap is dirt cheap and gets the job done.
\o/ Yesterday I was looking for alternatives to parafilm and some people recommended grafting tape. I was in doubt and then you released this video to reinforce recommendations. I'm using micropore, maybe it's not a good idea.
Micropore tape leaves a sticky residue and the plates dry out pretty fast. It does look nice though and you know it's not gonna open! I just wrap it like 3-5 times and give it a stretch on the last wrap.
It tickles me that you made this because that's all I use is grafting tape and I have not had a contamination in any of my plates since I've used it and I'm not kidding and I like you some of my plates were 89 months old back then I just now got back into a hobby but love you man have a nice day I'm going to be ordering pretty soon
I get cling film from the dollar store and followed your original tutorial of how to cut the roll in sections with a knife, rubber mallet and a bamboo cutting board. It works great with no issues at all and the best part, it’s cheap and follows the K.I.S.S. Method. Keep It Simple Stupid! lol
Mannnnnn I just made the switch today and I can't believe I ever wasted my time/money with Parafilm. The grafting tape roll is far easier to work with since you don't need to cut it or remove a paper backing. Just finished using it rewrap all my tearing plates with Parafilm. Thank you!!!
I used to use masking tape or paper tape some people may know it as. It worked pretty well and was also great for writing on. I still use it for labelling everything but I've switched to grafting tape thanks to your suggestion
Yep, I see parafilm breaking all the time in that one guy's videos if u pay attention he actually keeps it in his hand for a second in an attempt to warm it before wrapping the plate and it still breaks on him sometimes
I literally just got a roll of grafting tape this week and am very 😊 with it!! So funny 😁 this video 😂 just when I after I discovered grating tape, and I really hate parafilm aswell!! So yah, yahoo send it 😊
Great tip Ed. I did a quick search on my lunch break and found Parafilm Grafting Tape! Looks a bit more expensive than non Parafilm Grafting Tape but will research later on. Have a great day
Mine just came today. But do I have to sterile it? I got it off temu so I know it’s been in unsterile environments. Would using it just put the package cause any contamination to my plates?
I know I found one called parafilm grafting tape it's like the mix it lasted me about 3 weeks it stretches like parafilm and that was only thing in common it didn't break or dry out came in a roll a little more expensive than other grafting tapes but still not bad I think 9 dollars a roll 1 roll to go this time I bought. A three roll set of 3 different colors for 7 or 8 it doesn't stretch but it is still working amazing so those addicted to parafilm can transition through parafilm grafting tape no more plates sticking together and tape cracking and leaving behind all this nasty pieces I swear turns into a contamination vector and you can get that stretchy feel till you realize this is so much better
I had to try like 5 different brands. I found one now that is just clear 'grafting tape'. Cheap AF here. As long as we get around that shitty, expensive, unnecessary Parafilm, we are moving in the right direction. :)
If you in the US. Dollar General sells it. Its labeled something else, under the nexcare brand. But if you look at the back of the package, it states its just consumer labeled micropore.
I know you do not monetize your videos....so why is yt adding commercials to the beginning and in random parts in the middle of several of your videos. They are making money off your free content?
That is 100% incorrect. I'm not sure what grafting tape you are buying, but Parafilm is waxy (made from Paraffin). Grafting tape is a synthetic plastic make from polymer.
followed your suggestion ages ago saves bundles... plant grafting tape is the way to go thank Ed your helping the community move forward

💯 it's cheaper and works just as good. I got grafting tape on accident and I'll never changed lol

I finally just switched to petri dishes and I'm glad I heard of grafting tape before I did. Parafilm sounds like the pain I imagined it was.
For real. I just learned about cling film and grafting tape like last year. 20 years of the crap gave me carpel tunnel! LOL
Finally i can feel justified in throwing out my giant roll of parafilm. Re wrapping plates is the part of transfers that makes me want to not do it so much.

Yeah you can get giant rolls of that grafting tape for like $2 thanks for the video Ed :)

@@edwardgrand Yes, I was thinking about rewrapping. Thank you for sharing your experience and clarifying this.

I have been using it on your recommendation for a long time. It works great👌
I got a giant roll of restaurant cling wrap to go through then ill try the grafting tape. Thanks for the informative video Sir. 🍄❤️
Did the cling wrap work?
@@sharm7774 yea it works great, I wrap it about 3-4 layers, no problems
I used to use masking tape or paper tape some people may know it as. It worked pretty well and was also great for writing on. I still use it for labelling everything but I've switched to grafting tape thanks to your suggestion
what if i already have parafilm? What should I do with it? I can not just chuck it, as you said it's too expensive for that...
Use it until it's gone. It works fine, but grafting tape is better.
@@edwardgrand u cool bro.
Yep, I see parafilm breaking all the time in that one guy's videos if u pay attention he actually keeps it in his hand for a second in an attempt to warm it before wrapping the plate and it still breaks on him sometimes

That's exactly what I did with a cling wrap roll. Took a while, but it works.
I get roll of cling wrap and sharp kitchen knife, slice into 2inch rolls. Saves on bunch of money.
Just ordered my expensive first roll. #happy
It works fine. Try the grafting tape next time. :) It's way cheaper.
Love my grafting take a roll last me months
Great tip Ed.
I did a quick search on my lunch break and found Parafilm Grafting Tape!
Looks a bit more expensive than non Parafilm Grafting Tape but will research later on.
Have a great day
I think they're realizing their old product is becoming obsolete. :)
That cling wrap is the plastic we use to cover the food plate?
Yes. 'Saran Wrap' in U.S.
Yup Grafting tape is amazing!!
I actually use grafting tape as I'm too cheap to buy the "pro" product. Nice to see that it has advantages other than being inexpensive :)
The cheap stuff sometimes works better because it is thinner and more stretchy.
Mine just came today. But do I have to sterile it? I got it off temu so I know it’s been in unsterile environments. Would using it just put the package cause any contamination to my plates?
I just spray the hell out of it with alcohol, wipe the edges, and unwrap/throw away the first few layers. Should be fine.
@@edwardgrand that’s exactly what I am going to do thanks Edward
💯 Thanks Doc,, Parafilm is definitely unnecessary. Most these RUclipsrs pitch outlandish BS. Except Doc💎
Def won’t throw it out lol but after I’m done with it I’ll grab some grafting tape 🤣 parafilm is expensive
I just bought some food wrap and cut it into 1.5 “ pieces and it works well
Lol good morning Ed you going live?
@@GeorgeMathers0987 A little bit busy today. Might not be doing a live for a couple days.

Good to know!
100% this brother, grafting tape is all I use and all i will ever use. Parafilm is sooo outdated and bad, its pretty much the VHS of Mycology.
Well said. Very good metaphor/analogy! LMFAO
Did you try this tape in a Autoclave ?
Why?
I cut up a roll of cling wrap with a Chefs knife it's lasted me almost a year and I still have a few pieces 🎉 cheap
When I ask the pharmacy in every store I have been in looks at me crazy when I ask about micropore tape
If you in the US. Dollar General sells it. Its labeled something else, under the nexcare brand. But if you look at the back of the package, it states its just consumer labeled micropore.
True story ❤
Black Electrical tape for the win. JK JK
It does work in a pinch.
Sea Turtles !
I know you do not monetize your videos....so why is yt adding commercials to the beginning and in random parts in the middle of several of your videos. They are making money off your free content?
Probably. They do host a lot of gigabytes of videos for free :)
I stopped using it entirely and got screw lid dishes.
Parafilm does suck. big time.
We use simple electrical tape to join the graft union works great too
Grafting tape is literally the same material as Parafilm, in the US at least. Just not sold as sterile.
That is 100% incorrect. I'm not sure what grafting tape you are buying, but Parafilm is waxy (made from Paraffin). Grafting tape is a synthetic plastic make from polymer.
@@godzilla90fan You haven't wrapped the thousands of plates I have. Good bye.
