- This game will always hold special place in my heart, SmackDown Shut Your Mouth came out in 2002 and this game was just something else. The improvements from the older games were so monumental. The amount of joy this game brought a generation is crazy, however Here Comes the Pain overshadows this. However this game deserves some love too. Everything was just fun. However what made it fun? Lets go back to 2002 and find out

Can you do a video on No Mercy 2007? It’s a very underrated and forgotten pay per view in my opinion especially Triple H fighting 3 matches in one night. That main event with randy orton against triple h for the wwe championship in a last man standing match is an instant classic
One thing you forgot to mention was that this game was the first wrestling game in the series where you could actually reverse a finisher, but at the cost of one of your own finishers. It was a huge deal to be able to do that at the time and always felt epic when you were able to successfully do it. I'll always remember playing as Steve Austin and being shocked when my opponent countered my Stunner for the first time.
Its a shame that so much fun things are removed from modern wwe games for graphics 😔😔

2002 is a very underated year in WWF/WWE history, probably my favorite, just like this game!

My favorite part about the Season Mode was you weren't forced to win every match. If you kept loosing matches you'd get sent down to Heat and wouldn't be booked on PPV.
Also it was cool that you could play Season Mode as anyone on the roster including current champions and the game didn't force you to make a new CAW every time you wanted to start over.

Some of you didn't grow up playing triple threat tornado tag ladder matches and it shows LOL. The delivery of that line was gold

i never understood how or why wrestling games remove fun , and crazy features (such as fighting anywhere backstage and in time square etc) . imagine being able to do all the stuff you used to be able to do , with current graphics. some stuff are just too good to be true 🤦🏽♂️

@@epiccow6735 like I said many times before you can have all the graphics you want but you can't replace gameplay. I love the new graphics but there's a reason I have my PS2 on standby at all times it's too fun. Not to mention everyone loves the dark souls series. But they don't know that armored core was the start of from software. Armored core is the reason I still own a PS2 and always of course the wwe games and classics like sly 2.
Never understood how or why they remove the fun ?
Well, mainly 2 reasons.
1st reason: Realism/Simulation.
They've said it many times, they want to make the games " as close as what you see when you're watching a WWE show " .
Thing is, WWE haven't been fun nor exciting since the beginning of the PG Era ( which started around 2007 and got worse up to 2009, 2009 became the full PG Era and they stayed in that era ever since ) . So the games have to reflect that. Back in the days, when watching WWE, you'd see a guy make a tour bus explode, a guy cementing the boss's car, a guy giving a milk bash to the people in the ring, 2 guys fighting in a supermarket, and so on. So the games were crazy and fun to reflect that. Seeing Jeff Hardy do a Swanton Bomb from the top of SD's fist in the game was believable, because he's crazy enough to do it for real ( and didn't Shane McMahon jump from the top of the stage a few years later ? Shows that this kind of arcade elements, as crazy and fun as they can sound, were also pretty realistic, as they were things that could happen on TV at anytime ) .
That kind of crazy and fun died many years ago in the real WWE, so sadly, to keep offering a product " as close as possible to what you see on TV every week " , well, the games can't have any of these things anymore, since we don't see stuff like that on TV anymore, and aren't likely to ever see that in the future neither.
2nd reason: WWE and Vince thirst for control.
In the old games, the devs could pretty much do anything they wanted, Vince would only have the final word about the roster. But for the rest of the game, he didn't really care much, so the devs could have fun with it and do the stuff they wanted to. As long as Vince was making a lot of money from the sales, that's all he truly cared about.
Sadly, over the years, Vince's thirst for control got bigger and bigger. It shows on the quality of the WWE shows, and on the games too, as he now wants to decide every single aspect of the game.
Why do you think Yukes ended up leaving ? They said they were used to the yearly releases so that wasn't really a problem for them. No, they just got sick and and tired of having Vince and the WWE constantly on their backs telling them " No, you can't make this " , " No, that's not allowed " . They weren't having pleasure making wrestling games anymore. So they left. They want to keep making wrestling games, even with a yearly release if necessary, but they want to be able to make fun games that they enjoy creating, without having a control thirsty freak constantly on their backs telling them " No, you can't do this. No, you need to remove that " .
And from the rumors I've heard, there's a bad relationship between the WWE and 2K. Apparently 2K are already tired of WWE's control on creativity, and the WWE is considering taking back the license from 2K due to the bad relationship they have.
Shows how hard it has become to work for the WWE for game devs.

2002 was the greatest wrestling year of the 2000s.
I completely forgot about this game until the scenes where you would brawl in the subway. This video makes me want to find my PS2 and play this.
I will forever be baffled at just how criminally underrated Shut Your Mouth is compared to No Mercy, SmackDown 1 and 2, and (especially this) Here Comes the Pain.
Usually i hear Here Comes The Pain get all the love. Bout time somebody put some respect on Smackdown Shut Your Mouth. WWE games need more freedom basically. I remember u could make Spider Man and WEB SWING through the arena 😂 WWE gotta stop taking itself too seriously. Let us do silly shit like ride a shopping cart down a entrance and crashing into the ring & jumping from areas that would be deadly in real life lol
WWE itself is very over the top, the games should be as well. Not to the level of All Stars but those old games.

One thing I loved about Shut Your Mouth was how your opponents would do an over the top flop if you whipped them into an ambulance or the hot water tank in the boiler room. For 2002, the graphics were great, and despite most of the stories being based off real life television storylines, season mode was still fun
Season mode was great, and I loved the way you unlocked things, by winning or competing in matches at certain pay per views.
It's my favourite and roster was damn good... I played as Jeff hardy all the time and that swanton bomb off the smackdown fist was just 🔥

I just love the ridiculousness of this game. They need to make the modern games more like this game. More arcadey action, tons of weapons, and a ton of stages that aren't just a ring.

I remember playing this when times were easier, Classic game crazy amount of fun with my friends and putting our money together for a multitap
The create a wrestler mode was great in this game. I recreated more jacked & colorful versions of the whole roster. They even had a newer Kane mask in it and I created a flawless Deadman Taker & Goldberg.
I loved it because a lot of the early 2002 late 2001 storylines were in the game, which made the game ‘up to date’ you could even do your own draft at the start. Stone Cold was a free agent to either sign for SD or RAW. NwO storylines in the season mode were fun, the story cutscenes were fun to watch, fighting in different parts of the arenas was endless fun with your friends. I loved this and HCTP but in terms of a Season mode it’s 100% SYM. The only thing that I would of loved them to keep in the game was the WWF Attitude Era belt and the WCW Title, But it was then replaced by the single undisputed title.
"Smackdown Shut Your Mouth & Smackdown Here Comes The Pain" are my favorite wrestling games of all time!

Yo I never played it when it came out but I got sym and hctp a few years ago and I'm enjoying it especially the story mode. It had different scenarios depending on who you pick man. So much fun.

Absolutely not. Everything but the grappling system was a downgrade from shut your mouth. The player models, commentary, season mode, arenas, backstage areas. Shut your mouth was simply the goat. Fk out of here with your basic bitch of an opinion about here comes the pain.

SYM was cool. Loved seeing my wrestler running through parking lots, taking the subway, etc. Gameplay was fast paced and fun. Plus it was the last WWE game that had Raven
Back when every wrestler had their own unique animations and movesets. I also think that SYM had the best Season Mode to date. So many different variables, it felt like peak Bioware did it lol
Man,this brings back sweet memories,when games were games.No DLC, no micro- transactions,just good games.
I was 11 years old when this came out and my brother, cousins and I would come home do our homework immediately after school so we could hurry up to play this until dinner time lol oh the good old days I miss these days about wrestling. This new generation has no idea how amazing wrestling use to be .

Not even going to lie to you man. This hit me hard. I remember how fun the season mode used to be. Tbh I just buy the games and create my own shit in universe mode. But I have realized I haven’t played my career since 2k16. Tbh most people do that. That’s why even when we get good games like 2k19, it just feels like a update of 2k15.

For me, when they removed the Tornado Triple Threat Tag Team matches and made it tag only, thats when the fun gameplay died for the rest of the series.

The video packages and unlockable videos were so epic and showed what was going on, on tv in the wwe at that time! It made you work hard to unlock them.

I think the question from people who started w/ Here Comes the Pain is, why should we bother to play Shut Your Mouth when even you said that everything it has to offer was perfected by HCTP? The only things I can think of aside from the season mode are certain outside areas such as the subway station as well as being able to climb the TitanTron in some arenas. Even then, those pale in comparison to all the things you can do in the sequel.
Good point. I only play HCTP because I find reversing with R2 is way more convenient than using square.

I remember how happy I was that they finally got season mode right, what they did here is mostly what I expected they would do in the FIRST Smackdown game. They had a story for your CAW and some different ones for specific superstars they even involved the first brand split draft. Every time you advanced to the PPVs it felt big, the intros included pyro they even had a couple different themes for different PPVs. Had so much fun playing this back in the day.
This was literally the first piece of wrestling content that I ever engaged in and it started the obsession for me.

I played Shut Your Mouth and Here Comes The Pain recently and it still feels pretty good no lie.
I grew up with my older cousins and brother beating my ass in it until I started learning how to win.
The 2 smackdown games on the Psx weren't so bad now to think about it , they had ENORMOUS rosters and random generated algorithm season mode similar to Here Comes The Pain. Those with old smartphones who can't emulate the PS2 & PSP games should go for these 2
Only thing that sucks about SYM was that there was no submission system or blood. Everything else is great. But of course you got those things in HCTP. I also forgot that you couldn't get weapons in Hell in a cell in those earlier games.
I revisit this season mode every 5 years. I can play this and hctp forever

I'm an Xbox guy nowadays, but I agree PS2 was and will always be the GOAT. It springboarded my love for gaming. And SYM was one of those games where I would sit on it for hrs and never get bored
As Austin, you can do a spam a Stunner out of standing grapple. It'd prop your opponent back to their feet, and if they weren't quick enough, then you could repeat the move until you get a stored finish.
