A dramatic footage of Sri Lankan locals helping an elephant whose stuck inside a dam to swim away to safety and also to climb out of the canal way into the forest. This happened in a very rural area where facilities are limited towards an operation of this scale.

THE WILD ELEPHANT . Maybe supplying troughs near forest edge, so locals could fill up for elephant, so they won't seek drink/water from canal. Suppose canal is tempting to "dip" into also. Need to make "better", Several log/tyres ramps that won' t sink! Ready for more inevitable rescues. I understood the stick throwing & urgings to help elephant & chain effort, wonderful.

yes, a ramp of some sorts would be great, but not smooth but with ridges, so the elephants have some hold.
Constanze Steegmiller .I saw a vid. of locals putting together, this small log contraption, chains, ropes etc. Appears rope is for elephant to encircle with trunk for lift & planks wood fairly wide apart I think is meant so elephant can obtain some traction as it steps foot in front of logs. As they slip badly on slippery sloping concrete. Happens such frequency, with so many failed attempts by elephant & so tragic, you would think a celebrity Indian or International, or govt., would work to help design or donate an appararus more efficient. Makes me extremely mad!

Poor elephant. You could tell he was exhausted! This is certainly an important lesson for water engineers. I hope they will build a stronger, permanent ladder or stairway in order for elephants, who just want to cool off in the water, to climb out of the canal.
Stairways would be necesary and important to climb out 😮 poor elefant

Heartbreaking to see this elephant's struggles. The good people are in a panic, when it approaches the certain death of the spillway. So good to see it escape this unnatural watercourse. Respect for all who assisted.

Thank you for helping.. that guy in the blue was brave to constantly get close to help entice the elephant. You could see the exhaustion and strength when the elephant was shaking trying to climb out.

I really don't understand some of those comments. What else should have been done? They obviously couldn't tranquilize the elephant because she would have drowned and as active as she was they couldn't get a rope around her to pull her out either. When she finally got out they had to scare her away so that she wouldn't turn around, charge, injure or kill people and possibly fall back in. I think most commenters don't realise how difficult it really is to help a wild, terrified 3 tone animal and not get injured nore have the animal cause massive destruction during the rescue. I think this ended really well and the elephant hopefully never tries to swim in that chanal ever again!
With my zero knowledge of the matter I tend to completely agree. I wonder if most of the comments are coming from naive city people who never have seen a free running elephant, except in TV, on RUclips or in a zoo ... they most likely have never stood close to a cow to see that even that size can be very frightening once it attempts to go against you ... maybe the only animals most of these "specialists" have ever touched are dogs and cats ... but everybody "knows" what to do, or "should have been done" or how "stupid" these "idiots" are. And of course all animals are just seen as cute and they have to be handled with maximum care - until they hurt someone and then those who didnt protect the humans before are the "idiots" again cause "everybody knew how dangerous animals can be". Nowadays (or should I say "in youtube-days"?) everybody is a specialist on things he doesnt have the slightest knowledge of. Everybody comments and behaves like they are the big shot on any subject. People even complain about animals hunting and eating animals in a "non p.c." way - they call them "mean" and "beasty" while they themself stuff their burgers in their mouth. Maybe this is the wrong place to leave this kind of comment, but after watching several videos ... it just upsets me how many "specialists" leave their abusive, incompetent, naive, romantic bullshit in the comment sections ...
I'm a horse rider for 30 years and have experienced many times what damage a 600kg domestic, socialised horse is able to do when in a panic or how hard it is to rescue one when trapped. So it isn't hard for me to imagine the scale when you deal with a wild elephant. People really need to get back to nature.

I've only seen an Elephant once when I was a kid and I was mystified, they are trully massive and majestic. I've noticed how much India care for its animals even the people who aren't experienced show great care and consideration.

as often as mankind pollutes our waters.. Ropes , tires & chains dont tie themselves in a ladder formation.
Although their is a language barrier between man & animals, this elephant was given stern/caring body language by so many ..wich finally guided him to his rescue.
When the elephant kicked the tire at the end ..he was relieved, excited ,cheeky 😛 & SO happy because even he knew that he was rescued !! 😉
Their Encouragement was through the roof & he could see .....
they didnt leave him alone & give up so either did he .

It's amazing how elephant understood the rope-tyre ramp was the thing that was going to help it. Though the locals now have to make a Better one ' under- foot' more stable & quicker rescue for elephant footing. That will sink of course.

Beautiful, great rescue by man for an elephant. Despite being each other's enemies! Man has taken away the elephant's habitat, so the elephant is sneaking into the human habitat!
A good-hearted man who is not a hunter and kills for a fag will always help the elephant. Because in its culture, in its childhood tales, this big animal has a special meaning.

He's floating in a canal he can't climb out of and there are hundreds of people along the shore that he doesn't particularly want to mingle with. If they would all quit making noise and go away, he'll find his own way out. How do you think they manage on their own in the wild!! Certainly shooting at him ad throwing rocks isn't going to help him. You'd think these people had never seen an elephant before!

Very good Job to the Team of Workers helping the Elephant. However My Humble Suggestion is to have a Range of Steps put in Place for these Big Animals to get out of if they venture near or fall into this Waterway/ Dam. Where there is Water You will always find Elephants and other Animals trying to get a drink. My heart goes out to the Poor Animal so tired and fustrated yet happy to be on Dry Land,,, heck I would too after turning so pale not to mention hungry.
