    Daniel, a big thanks to you. I collected coins as a kid and then again some when I was about 30-35. I haven't looked at any of my coins for years. I took a quick look through some stuff and the first thing I came across was a PCGS graded group of coins, including a RB 64 1909-S VDB. The other that I thought might fit with this episode was a PCGS MS64 1884-CC $1. Needless to say, I have a lot more looking to do.

I don't have the experience nor the eye to try to judge the grades of coins I've tried to and come nowhere close to what they have graded to, so I will leave that to the people who can. I remember early on we had an antique and collectibles shop, five mall booths, and some friends introduced us to this new thing called ebay. I was also working full-time as a nurse. We were busy is an understatement. I remember going to the pawn shops, buying Morgan and Peace Dollars for six to eight dollars each, and I'd have some type coins in the mix as well. There's just something about holding a big silver dollar in your hand, feeling the weight of it, and you know you're holding real money, not just a green piece of paper. In the coin department those silver dollars were the big sellers, I had some difficulty finding enough to keep a good stock.
    Fun times, and everyone who's ever rented space in a mall knows you've got to really move inventory to make a profit. Still, I'd do it all over if I could, especially buying silver dollars for six to eight dollars each.

    I can relate to your personal experience too, Daniel. I first "fell in love" with Morgan Dollars over 30 years ago when I was just 10 years old. It was when my father took out his coin collection to show, share with, and educate me, hoping to engage me into the hobby too. When he pulled out and showed me his Morgan Dollars, I remember being quite surprised, because I never knew that a dollar also came in a coin form besides the paper money too. That is what piqued my curiosity and developed an eagerness to learn more about these "cartwheels" ever since. They are among my top favorite U.S. type coins :-D

    Morgans are my favorite US coin. I.started collecting them at least 40 years ago. Back then you could pick up a lot of the dates and mintmarks for the set. Even the semi-keys could be picked up for a few dollars each. Of course, some of the key dates then are key dates today. One exception is the 1903-O which was almost unobtainable until the mint released bags of them. They're still expensive but not like they were. I wished I would have picked the 1889-CC, 1893-S, 1894-P and the 1895-P back then. I could have made a killing but I didn't have the money back then to.justify putting out that much money.

    Daniel here ya go again posting videos to try and teach me something and I'll be darned if you didn't achieve Your Goal!!! Me myself I don't really care for Morgans because they are soooo incredibly brittle and most don't make it out of the mint already dinged up with bag marks before leaving the mint. I admit they are Beautiful Coins and with everyone buying them up like candy and somehow I'm starting to look at them differently and may try my hand at collecting them. I do have high expectations and a eye for perfection which if I do start they would have to be flawless to collect them. My vision isn't all that great anymore and it can't be fixed because it would do more harm than good. I would like to start a collection of Morgans but what I'm looking for in Morgans would most likely break the bank but You Only Live Once so I better get to looking. • @rvalens2
    @rvalens2 6 месяцев назад +1

    Daniel, I looked through all your video titles but couldn't find one that discusses how to detect fake silver coins (especially Morgans). As I am sure you are aware, it's become a BIG problem. I know a lot of people would welcome such a video. (Some of the fakes are getting scary good.) Myself, I use a digital scale, digital calipers, a silver slider, a Pocket Pinger, an eye loupe (15x) and sometimes I just drop them on a hard surface and listen to the sound. With a little practice, most people can learn how to detect them.
    Heaven help us if the counterfeiters ever start using real 90% silver in their fakes. I know they won't do that for the more common coins, but imagine if they used it to fake an MS-64 1881-CC Morgan dollar.

      Daniel does offer culls here and there. Buying them for junk silver is ok, but if you want to spend money on coins I will buy coins in the best possible grade I can afford, preferably graded by one of the big three grading companies. Then hang on to them. They'll appreciate in value more than low grade coins. My dad would tell me anyone can own junk, but the good stuff will always be good.

Platinum 1/10 and 1/4 are the best collecting opportunity in our lifetime. At the coin club meetings in Jacksonville I tell people I hate morgans just to see there reaction. At shows I see dealers with lots of unsold morgans. What gives. Lets see you talk about platinum proofs or even low mintage Truman of Eisenhower low mintage president dollars. Let's not enable this contagion we have in our hobby with over grading and value Daniel. It is not advised to send in a common year MS64 morgan.

      It’s not a contagion, grading coins preserves them and gives them a grade to value them by. Grading coins has been around since the mid 80’s and it’s not going away, so you got get with the times.

      @@CoinHELPu You've taken it out of context completely. The contagion is over grading coins, and thinking every coin needs to be graded, these thoughts are common for newcomers. Also, common MS64 Morgans don't need to be graded, the juice isn't worth the squeeze. An air tite is good.

    (Silver dollars) They made MILLIONS of them, Nothing special about them. Sure I like the looks of them, I like the (feel of them in my hand) more (Numismatic) than investment.
    Same with Silver Eagles, They make MILLIONS of them, Nothing special about them. (What is something worth?) What someone will pay for it. Plain silver bars are still silver. (Pop up ads) By the way JD B today is charging $2.99 over spot for silver rounds? I thought premiums were going down?

      You don’t know what you’re talking about. Silver eagles isn’t a comparison to Morgan dollars. Many dates are lower mintage and not millions and not that many survived because of the melts and lost from circulation. I recommend reading up a bit.

    Why would you even show us those Morgans if you don't sell them on line? What a giant tease!

      I have plenty of Morgan’s listed at portsmouthcoinshop.com but I don’t sell my stock in bulk or rolls.

    You already know.... All those SD's were minted and bagged up and put away. Great for getting Mint State for collecting, nice looking. Grading silver eagles? What? They all are minted and packaged up as MS. Nothing special about them. Even you bring up the (Markets hype) over so called (Special) releases. Keeping PM stacking and Numismatic separate is a blur.
