    For more accuracy take the measurements for each valve when the cam lobe is pointing away 180 degrees from the cam bucket/follower. Although the manual says do it only in 2 positions, you aren't getting the true clearance because the cam is often not perfectly round but slightly oval. At least take measurements in both positions to find if there is a difference. Often at 180 degrees (pointing directly away you will actually get less clearance. It is possible to be within spec in the manuals position and be too tight when the cam is pointing directly away.

    My Suzuki service manual say's _not_ to use a magnet to remove the shims; stating that the hardened steel shim material could become magnetized, which might attract debris or even pop out of the bucket. I use a pair of tweezers (Zircon encrusted optional), which is a bit more challenging, but may be safer.
    Please advise. OK on the magnet or no?

    I had a GS500 and it was ok upto about 90mph then it would just hit a brick wall. I suspect the shims needed doing. I like this method which doesn't involve removing the camshafts. To do the shims on my ZZR600, you have to remove the camshafts.

      It's the fuel control valve. Put it on "pri" under high load and check if the problem is gone.
      Vacuum operated and there's almost no vacuum under wide open throttle and the diaphragm gets old as well. On pri you put the system on priming and thereby override the system but never forget to put it back on normal afterwards. Common problem and try it first

    At 8:31. Is this step a MUST-DO?
    I did valve clearance checks on my 1990 GS500 (80,600km) a month ago all valves were in spec. However, I don't think I did this step of "re-aligning" the engine??? How important is it to do this part? Thanks!

    Thanx for the vid...I been riding my GS500 a bit harder lately and it developed a muffled sound on accel...then started to knock 1 morning, increasing & I checked oil level..nearly out & now has a shocking knock at idle, decreasing as revs are increased...any ideas??...I`ll have to strip it down but just not sure where to look first :(

    Does there need to be oil in the engine to do this? I have already drained mine and my engine is out because I am about to tear it apart.

    I have recently bought a 1992 gs 500 it has 25K mile's it has great compression but is hard to start back fire's and when I do get it running the left side carburetor shoot's out little stream's of gas out of a little hole where the air intake port is . Is this because I need to rebuild the top end or would it be as simple for me to just adjust the valve's?

    Guessing you are in Baltimore. You work at a shop? What would you charge to adjust my 92 GS500E valves? Just picked up this bike and it stalls out when coming to a shop. Carbs are clean, heard valve adjustment could be the issue.
