  • Jeff takes this episode of "History Hunters" to the area near Newman, California and a visit to the historic Hills Ferry Cemetery. There he tells of interesting folks who played a role in the history of California and the Central Valley of California.
Author and historian Frank Latta -- who befriended Littleton Dalton of Dalton Brothers fame and interviewed the grandson of the legendary bandit Joaquin Murrieta -- is buried here.

      Jeff & Sarah:
I challenge you to investigate the story of “Marshall South” he and his family lived, off the grid on top of a mountain in the Anza Borrego desert in Southern California in the 40s and wrote regular articles for Desert Magazine, you can hike up to the ruins and remnants of his home and find his grave site in the quaint wonderful apple pie town of Julian, if you don’t know the story, you’ll love it!

Been that way all my life...I was just a kid when my parents took us to her old family cemetery where 4 generations were buried.....way out in the woods where the family home was......found it fascinating...even as teenagers a group of us looked in woods for cemeteries while other teens were doing whatever things teens did at the time... .the HISTORY of cemeteries is so valuable....what you are doing will last forever! Hi Jeff, of all my friends that I know I believe I'm the only one that explores cemeteries. I find the history fascinating but most of all it teaches me to prioritise life a lot better. I'm a very fit and healthy 56 year old ie no smoking, drinking etc. Health and well being is number one, wealth is number two. Most if not all of my friends have it the other way around, some are not in good health and it doesn't concern them but will do anything for a dollar not realising that those dollars have no value once you pop your clogs.

When on vaction, when my kids were young, they would hate it when i saw an old cemetery. They knew dad was going to stop. I, like you have spent many hours in them. I always would think that all the people were like me at one time. They had dreams, raising a family, had hard times, good times, working hard. I guess we all end up there. Will someone look at my name and wonder, what this person ever thought, did in his life. I get it! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Jeff I really like your episodes that involve cemeteries. Especially when you highlight the veterans. Very cool to find a CSA grave in good Ole California. I have moved to Indiana and look forward to visiting the Graves here when the weather is better. My little town Darmstadt was founded in 1822. You two take care till next time.

The Hills Ferry Cemetery is a fascinating place. Hills Ferry was a major transportation hub for early California between the San Joaquin River steamboats and the ferry crossing of the river connecting the coast to the Sierras. The Interstate 5 for central California in pioneer days! I was there years ago chronicling the Bradleys and other associated families. The Bradleys are one those couples' stories of which you only see in a fictional movie..... They got married immediately after their first meeting at an evening party! She had just arrived in California, and Thomas, apparently, was not going to take a chance at losing one of the few single women that were in California. I believe the lost town of Escalon is where the Cottonwood Cemetery is located. I have not been to the cemetery that still exists and still has a few markers. One of the reasons that graves were removed and the cemetery closed was that it was next door to a elementary school, and the thinking was that it was not a good idea to have children look out of a school window to gaze upon a cemetery! I guess the Collegeville Cemetery on Jack Tone Road in San Joaquin County was different because it was located next door to a college!

Jeff howdy, when I resided in the San Gabriel Valley this is exactly what we did...visited graveyards! And so @5:21 you mentioned something about morbid, the fact of the matter is none of us will make it out alive which is a part of life so in the meantime (for me) enjoy life one day at a time and respect your fellow man.

Great video Jeff. Nice to see an older cemetery that is well maintained. So many aren't.
I too am fascinated by the local history that can be gleaned from cemeteries, and have checked out many. Have you ever been through the old Sacramento cemetery on Broadway? It's probably my favorite. The history and some of the monuments are fascinating.

Thank you for telling their stories, you’re such a wonderful storyteller! Another great episode!
I’d been living in the Central Valley of California for decades before I became aware of Ferry Hill.
The only reason I did is because the San Joaquin River swallows up the Merced River very close to there. (It is, actually, the other way around, but the river continues as the San Joaquin). I had been reading a fascinating story written and experienced by a journalist named John D Sutter. He did a somewhat crazy thing in 2014 and kayaked the San Joaquin River from source to sea. He had to drag his kayak through sand near Mendota. The river disappeared for 60 miles. I had no idea! Anyway, I just needed to find that spot where the 2 rivers confluence, and that’s how I ended up in the almost non existent Ferry Hill. Wish I’d known about the cemetery then! Really a lovely spot!

@@jbenziggy yes, I read about that! He wrote about crossing the valley. Apparently there really was a ferry running way back when. Before all the rivers were dammed up. I remember searching for a marker and somehow missed it. I was there during the drought, looking at the Merced and San Joaquin Rivers. Seems they were like 3 feet wide. The year after that I looked at the area again, and there was water as far as the eye could see. The only thing sticking out was the road! How far from the river is the cemetery?
