    Mandy Moore has recorded some beautiful music since her teen pop days. I saw her at a free outdoor show in Cambridge MA in 2007 after she released her record 'WIld Hope' which was lovely. There was hardly anyone in the crowd that day. Sweet as pie, Mandy excitedly askes the small gathering "does anyone have a request?!" to which someone calls out "Candy!" and her face instantly falls. "No" she says, "I mean from maybe this current record, or something from my covers album?" I felt so sorry for her in that moment. She seems like such a genuine and kind person. Every artist deserves to grow up and evolve.

    The mention of Sinatra and growing tired of singing a song brings to mind something Barbra Streisand said in her patter on her 2010 album, "One Night Only." She talked about how, as a singer, she gets so tired of singing songs like "People" and "The Way We Were" over and over again but she says she does it for her fans. She then tells a story of being in France and going to a Jacques Brel concert and she was so thrilled because she loved his song, "Ne me quitte pas" and, he didn't sing it. She said she was heartbroken but that stayed with her: How disappointed fans will be when you as an artist don't sing their favorites and so she'll sing those old songs because she knows what they mean to the fans. (I also attended a Norah Jones concert--I think it was around the time of her second album--and the couple sitting next to me were waiting to hear her sing "Nightingale" because it had been their wedding song. And Jones didn't perform it. I didn't ask them how they felt but I had kind of hoped Norah would sing the song. And, on another note, when I saw Heart in concert a few years back, I hadn't googled to see what their tour setlist featured but I was beyond thrilled when they started playing "Dog & Butterfly"--that is probably my absolute favorite song from the Wilson Sisters. I was probably the only person who stood up and screamed in delight when the song started.)

      I have most of Heart's albums and "Dog & Butterfly" is my favorite song of theirs, too. I have the 45, vinyl LP and CD. My least favorite (starts with "All...") is also Ann's least favorite. But no matter how much I like a song, I don't want the artist to perform if they are tired of it or if they now dislike it. I want the artist to do the show they want to do.

He felt more connection to his earlier songs like “Ain’t No Sunshine”, “Grandma’s Hands” and “Lovely Day.” The label made him record it to fulfill his contract and he essentially quit the music business shortly after. I don’t care how much hate it gets, that is a great pop song. Vanessa Carlton should be grateful that 1000 miles is as beloved as it is because many artists don’t even get that. Maybe the reason people are always wanting to hear that song is because your other songs suck, Vanessa. and for the narrator to say it’s easy to see why these artists don’t like the song because people always request them, at least they’re requesting a song by them and not walking away and ignoring them. I would dispute the assertion that Madonna hates "Like A Virgin" more than "Material Girl". She's performed reinvented versions of LAV on most of her tours, as opposed to "Material Girl", which she tended to hate because of being referred to as such for decades afterwards. She didn't write either of these, unlike most of her output, so that may have something to do with it all as well.
    Additionally, "Fight for Your Right" came out in '86, not '87.

    While I can understand artists getting tired of certain songs, unless there is a truly painful memory attached (such as Brian May witnessing Freddie Mercury's self-destructive behavior and death) refusing to play a popular song for fans that pay their obscene ticket prices seems like a privileged choice. Most of us have jobs that involve doing things we don't enjoy and don't reflect our talents fully. I can understand if they (privately) dislike a song that has been overplayed or doesn't reflect their best work , but most fans want to hear a mix of old and new songs that allow them to celebrate how the music has been part of their lives.

    Don't know if this really qualifies, but Eric Clapton evidently refuses to play either Tears in Heaven or My Father's Eyes anymore, saying that they're both time capsules from a time he's since moved on from. He doesn't hate them per se, but he has no wish to revisit the times in his life that they represent. Especially Tears in Heaven.

    None of us escaped the earworm that was 'A Thousand Miles', but I was never a fan of hers during that era. I have been a huge Vanessa Carlton fan since she released an album in 2011 called 'Rabbits on the Run'. I went to see her at a small club in Brighton MA soon after. There was this girl standing next to me who kept shouting out "ordinary! Play ordinary day!" over and over again. Finally, when it was clear that song would not be on the set list, the girl turns to her friend and says "I wonder if she hates that song" - lol. Yeah, honey. She does.

    I once watched an interview here on RUclips of Cher and she said she doesn't like any of her songs except for I Got You Babe that one is her favorite. The reason she said that she likes I Got You Babe is because after she recorded the song with her then husband Sonny Bono before their marriage ended in divorce and before he passed away there was still a part of her where she loved him very much after their divorce and after he passed away. She said that she doesn't like all of her other songs but she sings and performs for her fans not herself. I actually really admire her for that.

    For all the artists out there that dislike one or more of their songs just because they were young when they released them, I just want to point out that Kip Winger is in his 60s and is still singing "She's only 17," and he was 27 when he released it. Trust me, your teenie-bopper songs haven't reached that level of cringe...

    Two that you’ve missed are “In The End” and “Crawling.” The only person in Linkin Park who disliked them was Chester Bennington. Even though these weren’t ones he hated, he just didn’t like them as much as the other ones. With “In The End,” he thought it was nice but didn’t like it as much as the other songs on the Hybrid Theory album, mainly because it wasn’t as heavy. Now with “Crawling,” he liked it at first but he just got sick of playing it for so long because in the chorus, it’s just one note over and over again until the second verse comes in or we’ve hit the bridge.

Kinda makes me wonder if he has similar feelings for songs he wrote for/about Gwenyth Paltrow.

    It's odd that you left Cher off of this list. Many of her most successful songs are ones she never cared for, not least of which is "If I Could Turn Back Time". I suspect there's something in her subconscious - something negative - and it's triggered by one or more elements in these songs.

    • @ratdude747
      @ratdude747 5 месяцев назад +1

      From what I've read, she always wanted to be a rock star. But all of her rock efforts weren't successful, other than her part in Meatloaf's Dead Ringer for Love. All of her songs in other genres were attempts (often successful) to recover from a failed rock venture.

    • @Tricob1974
      @Tricob1974 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@ratdude747 Ah, you're forgetting about singles like "I Found Someone". :-) But yeah, her most interesting rock "fail" to me was Black Rose. The concept was fantastic; take several musicians with talent equal to Cher's, throw tradition to the wind, and record an album. The thing is, the material wasn't very focused. "Never Should Have Started" came together the best, but that's because they followed some of the traditional song-building process ... unconsciously. When they broke away from that method in their other songs, things kind of fell apart. But it sure you left you something to talk about.

    Robert Plant hated Stairway because his son died and then the addition of John Bonham’s death made it absolutely unbearable for him to sing.
    It wasn’t because it was such a big hit, it’s because the connection to it became to painful. It’s why Heart’s performance of it is so revered, because he was drawn to tears by it.
    You missed a few good ones-
    John Lennon and George Harrison hated a bunch of Paul’s songs- especially Maxwell silver hammer
    Vanilla ice absolutely hated ice ice baby
    For your love by the Yardbirds made Eric Clapton leave the band
    John Bonham hated Dyer Maker because Jimmy Page wrote it to mess with him because Reggae was the only genre he couldn’t play
    Lou Reed hated a lot of the album Loaded that he sand with The Velvet Underground
    John Frusciante refuses to play any songs off of One Hot Minute (cuz Dave Navarro was with the band)
    David Gilmour hated most of the tracks from The Wall
    I’m sure there’s others. You could argue a lot of Bob Dylan’s stuff because he constantly changes it completely. I know he resented a lot of his pre electric music as he’d get boo’ed for playing electric.
