Blue Öyster Cult will return with a mammoth new studio album “The Symbol Remains“. Coming nearly two decades after the release of their last studio album, “Curse of the Hidden Mirror,” the album showcases a band who hasn’t been slowed by the time passed, but simply unphased by it. “The Symbol Remains” is one of the band’s most spirited, diverse, and inspired releases to date.
The album will be available on CD, 2xLP, Limited Edition Color 2xLP, and Digital formats. Buy/stream HERE: orcd.co/symbol...
As the old saying goes, “good things come to those who wait” and the 14 songs showcased on "The Symbol Remains" embody that. The BÖC faithful will be delighted given that the band has delivered an extremely inspired album. Ultimately, this sounds like a band looking back at their storied catalog and giving the fans a bit of everything they’ve ever loved about BÖC, while simultaneously continuing to evolve.
Blue Öyster Cult started sessions for the new album in earnest in 2019, bringing songs to the table that had previously been in the works as well as working on new ones. The goal was to craft an album that gives an appropriate portrait of where the band is in the here and now.
"With the song demos emerging for this record, we realized there was as much if not more variety in style and content on this record as any in our history,” tells Eric Bloom "We embraced this and the thing tying all the disparate elements together is the band’s sound and performance."
"The goal was for the new music to stand up to the quality and vitality of our legacy recordings, and I believe we have successfully done that,” adds Donald “Buck Dharma” Roeser. “Other than that, the sound of our voices and style of our writing and playing can’t help but sound familiar to fans of our work."
“The album title, “The Symbol Remains” comes from a quote of an old Sandy Pearlman lyric, which basically we are using to show that the band is back and still rocking after all these years. To me, it means we’re still here and doing what we do...” explains Eric Bloom.
As fans well know, Bloom and Roeser are the two steadfast members remaining from the “classic" lineup of the band, but Jules Radino, Danny Miranda, and Richie Castellano are all long time members. Their constant touring has truly caused them to gel as a unit and you can hear it in the performances on “The Symbol Remains”. Jules, Danny, and Richie here have left their mark on the 50+ years of Blue Öyster Cult history.
"We wanted to record the current band’s lineup for some time and the result of Jules, Danny, Richie, Eric and myself giving our all on “The Symbol Remains” speaks for itself,” says Buck Dharma.
While the current world situation caused some distress, the band is still very happy with the final result. "The Covid-19 lockdown slowed the completion of the record. We were prevented from traveling and collaborating in person. But luckily we had already done the basic tracks. We resorted to video conferencing and producing each other over the internet. Fortunately, the technology exists at this moment in time to do that. The live performance cancellations gave us a little more time to carefully consider the finishing touches. We also sent the album out to be mixed by Tom Lord-Alge and we worked together over the internet on that as well,” adds Buck Dharma.
Formed on Long Island at the end of the '60s, Blue Öyster Cult are best known for their massive singles "(Don't Fear) The Reaper," "Burnin' for You," and "Godzilla." Riff-heavy and head-banging while intelligently hook-laden, the band remains a constant touring presence and as relevant as ever. Pioneering the heavy metal style while providing inspiration to psychedelic jam bands and arena rockers alike, genre-benders Blue Öyster Cult is a widely respected classic rock band with a storied catalog., The band has been covered by everyone from Metallica and HIM to moe, which showcases the wide ranging influence of their music.

This is Eric Bloom at his finest. Dude is 76 and still rocking it
Maybe he really is an alchemist?!
Can you imagine having a grandfather who lives this type of life?
Raaaaiiiiders!!!!
Eric Bloom rocks the planet !!!!!
seen him like ten days ago at 78! A career of evil indeed!
THIS is Blue Öyster Cult
Who would have expected such a masterpiece 40 years after "Veteran Of The Psychic Wars" and such a video reminiscent of the "On Your Feet Or On Your Knees" cover even after 45 years?
The Blue Öyster Cult is timeless.
And "The Symbol Remains" is one hell of a ride through the whole band's history. True to the band's heritage with every note.
@BAZ INGA Definitely not a masterpiece. Hardly even decent. This song is pretty good though.
Blown away 😱
this is not even close to "Veteran of the Psychic Wars". It is a good song, not a masterpiece for sure
It's more after dark with Psychic wars riff but toned down so it's very good easily a top 5 album so hey that's not bad.
@BAZ INGA Disagree. I think it is one of their masterpieces. It's a gem. They also went somewhere they haven't been before with this song. They've never had a dual guitar part quite like that, but they didn't used to have Richie.
The Alchemist does not Fear the Reaper.
Lol 💀
It's amazing how much Buck continues to progress as a guitarist. Most musicians are stuck in the times they came from, while Buck sounds like he could play in a symphonic metal band. Of course, he was ahead of his time, so it's no surprise.
Look at how effortless he plays
No grimacing expressions ..He doesn’t even break a sweat
@@kiwi9147 Well, he shouldn't break a sweat. As a guitarist myself, when you play for a certain period of time (which varies depending upon your natural ability) there shouldn't be any physical effort required.
The real point though is that many bands are products of their eras. If Foghat is still around, they're most likely playing what they did in the 70s, while Buck is always moving forward.
@@erinhoffmanofficial1412 I think he was using not breaking a sweat as a metaphor. No need to get politically correct.
They've been doing it since 70's. Listen to Nosferatu.
Amen!
Oh yeah! The Comeback of Eric's symbol shaped guitar!
It remains :)
The original was sold a long time ago, with another guitar too. I think it was pretty low for the pair, I kind of regret not bidding on it :/
omg that guitar looks so stupid i love it and i want one of my own
It's a stun guitar!
Yeah that's fucking awesome, plus the Buck cheese guitar a nice touch as well
2 bands that need to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame are Blue Oyster Cult and Emerson , Lake, and Palmer. If they can induct rap artists, they can certaitly induct people who play real rock music, on real instruments, who have also influenced numerous hard rock, metal, and prog rock artists. If not, there needs to be an alternative hall of fame of sorts for deserving artists to be recognized.
Honestly at this point being excluded is almost more noteworthy than being included, lol. But they certainly deserve the recognition.
Most modern rock bands in 2020: "We can't do anything because of the pandemic."
Blue Oyster Cult in 2020: "Let's post a bunch of concert videos from past years on RUclips, record and release a new album and why not make a couple music videos to promote the album while maintaining proper safety measures."
Love your comment...BOC rose above the coronavirus and saved the world.
Thanks! I love your comment! BOC rocks on!
And put out a bunch of live albums too!
And do a live concert at a drive in theater so people can stay in their cars.
@@stevebrown6623 Their former drummer also records and issues a new album, films videos and does a livestream concert.
This is heavy too, wow. crushing. My favorite band of all time....there I ...ucking said it. Does it again. I'm 58 thousand yrs old
"The Alchemist"
I've walked a path of darkness just to open up my mind
I've learned of hidden secrets scattered through the depths of time
And at my father's side I witnessed things I can't describe
"They must be evil!" the people cried
So when the prince went missing and the mob was at our door
The king would not see reason, only vengeance, only war
My father's neck held in his grip until he was no more
But the prince was still alive
And I said
May never a noble of your murderous line
Survive to reach a greater age than thine
Because I'm the Alchemist creator of your fears
I'm the Sorcerer a curse throughout the years
And I won't rest till no one's left
The ending of your line
Their lives are a prison of my design
Through the generations they'd forgotten of my vow
But still my will be done, my curse stays stronger even now
A tragic fall, a fatal brawl, all accidents each time Oh why must the young kings die?
May never a noble of your murderous line
Survive to reach a greater age than thine
It was I, the Alchemist creator of their fears
It was I, the Sorcerer a curse throughout the years
You won't escape your tragic fate
The ending of your line
Your life is a prison of my design
The final king's obsession to escape impending doom
Reached beneath the castle walls where he chanced upon a room and there he found his enemy, the man who cheated death And I said, with my last breath
It was I, the Alchemist creator of your fears
It was I, the Sorcerer. I've waited all these years
And when you pass you'll be the last
A victim of your line
Your life was a prison of my design
I'm the alchemist, I've lived a dozen lives
I'm the sorcerer, the face of your demise
And from these walls, I've made you all believe this curse of mine
The engineer of all you fear, the terror in your mind
I've sacrificed eternal life for justice for the crime
Our lives were a prison of my design
Thanks so much to you who print the lyrics with the comments. Mirrors was the first new BOC album I bought. There were no lyrics in the album but on the sleeve inside it said you could send a self addressed postage paid envelope to an address , I think in NY, and they would send a copy. I did and received a simple photocopy of the lyrics for the entire album. Obviously long before internet - so happy to hear new music sounding so close to the older classic BOC!!!
Gotta love that Iron Maiden-esque gallop in the middle there. Pretty dang cool. :-)
Echoes of Nosferatu, Telepaths, Unknown Toungue, Vengence & pianos a little bit Joan Crawford! Well that's what "I" hear! Love it! Loving this whole album!
So, the Symbol does remain, right?
@@karllux-d6g the symbol will ALWAYS remain!
@@underworldpalacecustoms9889 that's all I wanna hear!
Blue Oyster Cult= Most underrated hard rock band ever
Buck Dharma= Most underrated guitarist and riff creator ever!!
Channeling Mr. Lanier on this one? Certainly feeling his influence in the keys here, and it makes me smile.
Who's on keys here?
I couldn't agree more with you. Allen was most definitely influencing the keys on this track from somewhere. And it made me smile as well.
Completely agree!
@@Fletch-1974 Andy Ascolese
Has those same kind of stabs throughout as Flaming Telepaths, I dig it!
Man I've never heard heard a lovecraft story
Taken to song form so well
Eric Bloom, still badass at 75! (And, I've just noticed from Wikipedia, a fellow Sagittarian.) It's Saturday, November 7, 2020, and I'm listening to this to celebrate. So glad to see a new album from my favorite band, and so glad it has one of their trademark "story in song" tracks!
Having read the original Alchemist, this is pretty damn solid.
Yeah, despite being a somewhat barebones music video it does a pretty incredible job at capturing the mood of the original story.
I met the band back in the late 80"s after their show. We had a drink and I got their autographs. I still have the ticket they signed. It is one of my fondest memories. And they are still kicking ass and taking names. This video is superb. Can not wait to see them live again once this damn virus is under control.
To the two of you who commented it was awesome,
I also saw them at a small club here in Phoenix in the early 90s I met, and talked with the band for a few mins after the show, and they all autographed my t shirt for me. It was a great show, I eventually lost that shirt in a storage unit I couldn't pay on, a very sad day indeed. Especially since I've never seen another BOC shirt with that particular design, it was a white long sleeve shirt that had a hand in the middle of the shirt that was surrounded by flames, in the hand was a crystal ball, and inside the ball was the Cronus Symbol, and I've never seen another one.
0:08 that's exactly how I used to picture in my mind Baron Von Frankenstain's castle at Weisseria!
started listening to these guys during the lockdown, then they released their first album in 19 years.
Welcome to the Cult.
What took so long?
What a lucky guy you are, discovering BOC now, i would it happens the same for me every day ;)
Stupendous!! Yay Andy Ascolese!!! Great job Richie! Eric is perfect, dual guitar solos, Buck, Danny and Jules driving like a Mack truck! It just doesn’t get better!! BÖC
Love it!!!!!!!
I've been a huge BOC for decades now. Basically since I was 16 years old. And as much as I love their old stuff, there are times when I think this is their BEST song.
Wow. The dueling leads intense. Sounds like its off Imaginos/Cultosauras. Take your places as the kings. Salute!
Sounds like every Iron Maiden album...ever
Dude you pulled an imaginos guitar choir reference. Respect from here. See ya round
It's like they are right back where they belong. I can't wait to see this live
@@timcornell8975 uhhh? no
@@Rhino1277HotRails, I saw Blue Oyster Cult live on Saturday August 6, 2022 at the Ventura County Fairgrounds in California. BOC rocked and were so chill at the same time. I loved the show! Before the concert I had only heard (Don’t Fear) The Reaper, Godzilla and Burnin’ for You. Since the concert I have discovered treasure in listening to their albums. I have listened to most of them now more than once. So much wonderful rocking music with good melodies and interesting, thought provoking lyrics. There are many truth drops in their songs. They were shredding before metal was a thing.
Holy crap!!! Amazing! 😁🤘😎
BÖC adapting a Lovecraft tale is something I've always wanted!!!!!!! Realizing this song was it was a godsend. Godspeed, you magnificent band and all you ladies, fish, and gentlemen that are avid fans as well.

Blue Oyster Cult-"🤔🎸🎸☕📻..
Wow! Just Wow! That was a fantastic song! Truest BOC in it's most pure form. Eric sounds absolutely fantastic and he made me believe the whole story. Bra-vo!
The new BÖC album is easily the best thing that happened in 20fucking20!
Deep Purple's Whoosh was pretty good too... Some great legends coming out of the woodwork this year for sure.
agree 1 million % - best album ever and this video is such fun too!
@@paddypace and there's still AC/DC's new one to come
While you're not wrong it's not like they actually had proper competition.
Is The Best álbum of The year next to HEAT II
The best rock song of 2020 in my opinion.
Nosferatu vibes
Agreed. It holds old school and new school together in a way not seen by anyone else.
Yes, VERY ‘Nosferatu’. And, indeed, it is the facf of the most influential band in my life, telling a story written by one of the most influential authors in my life that makes this song. So extraordinary. I loved BÖC before I encountered Lovecraft, but at this point in my life, a good 30 and 20 years later, respectively, they have had an equally potent impact upon my spiritual beliefs and personal cosmology, not to even begin to mention my sense of aesthetics in far more areas than just music and literature.
I usually gravitate to Bucks songs but this new kid (Richie) cannot be ignored. Outstanding
Man, that instrumental! Wow!
This is glorious. A full return to form, absolutely on par with anything they ever did.
This is a step further from original form, its brilliant!!
Actually one of their best songs of all time imo.
This is a great CD. Tainted Blood is my fav
This song and video is beyond the epic :')
Headbangin' bearded wizards 🧙♂️
What a voice, so well preserved! Eric is 77 yo in 45 days and still a young boy. What a singer! What a song! What a band! Congratulations!
Losing 2 Rock Gods This Year, in Neil & Eddie, it's wonderful to see BOC come out with an album that sounds phenomenal so far !!
Richie plays a Peavey EVH Wolfgang guitar in this video, which is probably not a coincidence. :)
THIS is why I look forward to new music by my all-time favorite band: Blue Oyster Cult! I've seen them live three times, and this video reminded me that I should be paying attention to their website for their next tour. Their music has never gotten old!
Bloom was born for this role. Perfect.
Richie is killing it with these video productions, not like the old days when a band would pay 10's if not 100's of thousands of $$ for a vid.
These videos have been cheap, but fun and actually let the song do what it's supposed to do.
Has been much appreciated.
I get it, cheap videos. This actually looked pretty good nevertheless! 'That Was Me' was the first one I saw and it was a bit of a shock. It's quite an awful video to be honest. But at least the music is good!
@@mungosmungo8694 I agree, keeping production in-house lowers cost and we're more likely to see videos for more songs. He's doing a great job.
@@Meemitalo_ Keep in mind that these are being made during the pandemic. Everyone in "That was me" was likely filmed separately and then reen screened/spliced together in the editing room. Great job with all the current restrictions.
@@itsno1953 I know and I accept it but I'm judging it the way I see it. If it wasn't for the pandemic, my reaction would be like 'what the hell is this? Come on, you could've done a better job...'
Better job, which they actually did on the later videos because I don't think they all are that bad
That solo is incredible.
Wow!...Excellent.
This is one of the most kickass songs of all time.
Hands down my favorite song on the new album! Outstanding work, guys! The wait certainly paid off. So glad you're back 🤧❤️ *hugs from Brazil*
Who thumbs this down!?? BOC creates a legendary album for fans. I predict if the radio is honest (and I really don't care) there should be new BOC songs playing on it this year. Many to choose from.
Fat fingers?
@@PaulStewart1959two Is that a track on the album?
Loving this album already. Hopefully Bloom and Dharma realize they can’t wait another 19 years between albums.
Agreed i was hoping for a Radio friendly album ala Mirrors or Fire Of An Unknown Origin.......there PR guy should be throwing 8 balls to DJs to play Box In My Head like it was done in the olden days........;)

That sweep picking was actually on fucking point. Nice.
It's official, Blue Öyster Cult is The most consistent band of all time!
Not many albums that are worth waiting twenty years for.... this is one.
Favorite band EVER!!!
BOC ABSOLUTELY KILLING IT WITH THIS SONG!!! Great lyrics! Great vocals! Great guitars! Great bass & drums! Great piano! Great Mix! Great Video! Great all around production! GREAT SONG!!! GREAT ALBUM!!!
BÖC still rules.Power to all of us.🍯💪😁
This album is surprisingly good. Florida Man is a mellow & catchy song.
This song is already a Blue Oyster Cult classic. My favorite track on the new album. This song rocks so hard. Perfect!!
Great song by one of the greatest bands in Rock. And criminally overlooked as Metal pioneers
This one has a Maiden vibe, especially with the blazing guitar harmonies in the middle. One EVIL track!
I always wondered what happened to the Seventh Son of a Seventh Son :D
You surely mean “Iron Maiden has a BOC vibe”?
I also heard some elements of Dio's brand of Metal as well. Or vice versa. Either way this was a badass song.
Yes, picked up that instantly!! HAIL Maiden & the Mighty BÖC!!!!
I think the whole BOC + Maiden/Dickinson tie-ins can be nearly summed up in the Cowbell skit to be honest (THE BRUCE DICKINSON!?!?!?!?)
And since at least two songs off Chemical Wedding sound like they could have come off of Spectres, maybe it's been around a lot longer than anyone thought............
As if this monster of a song wasn't cool enough, watching Eric's symbol guitar has rescued this godawful year. Welcome back guys! Please do not forget to come to Mexico whenever possible.
This is the best song off the new album imo. Sounds like it could be taken right off of "Secret Treaties"! Can't wait to see this video!
Edit: Okay just going to go out on a limb and say that this ranks up there with the band's best songs ever.
how did you hear it ?
I thought this song sounded like classic BOC too.

Bloom's snarl is intact!
At 3:40 the guitarist fingers look like they are bleeding from absolutely shredding that guitar. Also buck dharma once again melts his fingers for our entertainment!
