No, his career is far from over. He and his wife resume their careers in high finance making the real money, only he'll have "former PM" by his name to charge more for his clients.
I think the main reason is the belief that the UK population are stupid. That 14 years of misrule can be undone by the fact summer means people won't see crippling heating bills, there is less pressure on the NHS, and that if it's sunny everyone will be in a nice mood. And honestly, it's probably worth more than a few % points on the day.
Inflation came out still ahead of forecasts so interest rates might not be cut before the election, and the recent immigration figures are still high, which came out just before the announcement. Plenty of negatives which may still be fresh offsetting potential upsides
I take your points as valid. But the implication (population is stupid) of your point is that this can be solved by non Tories. Isn't this stupid? The issues you discuss are structural issues about the UK populace and our economy. Too many people living longer, too few persons working, too many young people complaining of asinine "mental health" issues and not working or claiming benefits, too little business growth and entrepreneurship. No, taxing companies and those earning more than 100k won't solve the issue but in fact worsen it. Even labour admits they don't have much room for economic improvements. So who is really thinking the public is stupid? At least some Tories are willing to be honest about these problems. No lib dem labour or green party is, instead blaming it all on the rich.
I gotta object to your take of "asinine mental health issues" here - it belies your total naïvité on the subject. If an entire generation are mentally ill, measured by internationally agreed standards set by people who aren't - there's something bigger going on that "aww poor babies don't want to get a job". If the younger millennials, gen Z and Alpha weren't patronised or dismissed, had some stake in the union and their future, and weren't so utterly crippled by the least affordable student debts, rent, energy, travel, and food costs we've ever seen - *perhaps* depression, anxiety, and hopelessness wouldn't be the status quo. I feel like not enough people realise truly how tactical such a short term election is. I am in my mid 20s, a good few of my friends are on holiday. One is looking into proxy voting but the others don’t see the point in doing so.
Postal votes are a thing and pretty easy to apply for. Being on holiday doesn't mean that you can't vote - I've been away during elections many times and always voted.
@@wowsuchname1939 this is why there should be compulsory voting. In Australia politicans cant use this tactic, pre voting booths are set up a month in advance and everyone recieved a postal vote in the post if they cant make it to the polls on a saturday.
Unlike some other politicians, Sunak has no personal economical motives to stay in the job. He and his family will be well off whatever happens, and I don´t blame him for wanting to quit sooner rather than later.
I mean if you look at the government contracts and the ties to his family e.g. Infosys etc you'll see that the family make much more on those contracts from the govt. So its not true that there is zero financial incentive. Plus being a PM of a country boosts your charging rate post being the PM. There's loads of financial incentives
@@mzo.7333 I guarantee you Labour will also give Infosys contracts. It is one of the biggest IT companies in the world. They will get theirs no matter what and who comes
I think you're missing something else aswell. Voter suppression. Students are doing A-Levels, University exams, moving Uni accommodations, and going home to visit their families in early July, something which will make it difficult for them to vote for Labour as that demographic overwhelmingly does.
Exams should be over by July; some may be moving or away then, but not all (it's still quite early) and can apply for postal votes if needed; students can be registered at both their home and university addresses, so they can choose where they'd prefer to vote. So whilst it may affect some students, I think the vast majority will still be able to vote as they wish to.
Are you sure young people are voting labour? Here in Portugal we had a historically high afluence of young voters and both the right and extreme right surpassed past elections numbers by a landslide
it would actually help the Conservatives more if the Students were not at home. If they vote at home in rural areas they swing the vote left, in cities which are likely to be more left already, it has less of an impact. So to skew the vote with students they'd have wanted to call the vote a little earlier.

The Manifesto argument works only if you believe Sunak is done writing his own with the consensus of other Tory MPs and party members... Looking at how the different factions have been infighting since the start of his premiership, I strongly doubt he has any lead on Labour in that regard.
The fact that politics even has these tactics shows how messed up everything is. Politics should be about carrying out the will of the people and caring for the people, not some politicians playing tricks on eachother to acquire power
@christophersmith8990 many families have planned holidays and will likely be outside of the country during the general election, they can vote by post but it’s just more of a hassle and many won’t go through the effort.

@@Infinitystar225 Because the right-wing government is afraid of losing support to the even-more-right-wing Reform UK, the government tries to make policies which will keep the loyalty of people who might be tempted to vote Reform. So Reform has an indirect influence on government policy, as the Conservatives try to out-Reform the Reform party. What Reform does or says might matter, in terms of what the Govt might do to head it off. Meanwhile, no-one cares about the Greens or Lib Dems. The Greens are seen (fairly or not) as a tiny single-issue party - if you vote for them, you were probably going to do that regardless and it still won't make any difference in the UK's voting system. Perception of the Lib Dems is that the one time they got into joint power, they just went along with their bigger partner and Lib Dem voters didn't see anything in exchange for their votes (I guess the Lib Dems couldn't point to many instances where they talked the Tories down). Calling the Torries racist has to be the most insane and unhinged thing I've ever heard of. The torries are socially progressive and economically moderate right wing.
@@captainvanisher988 I'm guessing you have your own definition that neatly leaves them out, if you have a better explanation as to how Truss got in then let's hear it.
@@mrmr446 No racist party would allow Britain to become even 2% non-British let alone in 20% non-British that it is now. Racist parties would never allow blacks and browns into their ranks either. This is racism. Now let's go to nationalism. They aren't nationalists either. Nationalism means that they will have a hard stance on immigration. They won't allow unassimilated migrants to stay. However Brits that are of different ethnicity but have fully assimilated ought to stay in the country and be accepted. Nationalism also entails to not give power to globalist organisations over national policy. Now Torries support homosexual marriage, are full fledged feminists, are very diverse in their ranks, love immigration, are pro-abortion, do not hold Christian values and Christian based policies, are globalists. All these things make them socially progressive. Now they are also against gun ownership, pro censorship and anti speech laws and pro lockdowns. So they're not even conservative libertarians in that sense. Now I said they're moderately right wing economically but that's also a stretch. Let's leave it at that though.
The government has been asking us to stock up on canned food water and batteries in the event of a "disaster" this could suggest up coming difficulties with civil infrastructure leading to 3 day weeks as seen in the 1970s disastrous for the tory government and leading to the re election of labours Harrold Wilson
Labour : Always weak on the economy ... except every time they have been in power the ecconomy has done very well, debt is reduced or even elimminated, unemployment down, wages up, inflation down etc ... and the opposite is true to the Conservatives - the mainstream media and the Conservatives have said Labour at bad on the economy repeatedly - but it does not match reality
I often feel like the left is more "reasonable" than what they claim during campaign (promising to increase fundings of everything but following up on only a few of those promises for budget reasons) while the right is significantly less "reasonable" than what they claim (promising to run a balanced budget but giving tax cut to all their friends).
Let's not say every time as the 2008-2010 financial crisis was on Labour's watch but that was more of a global situation to be fair to them. You're right tho the Labour being weak on the economy is exaggerated, made easier by the fact most people can only remember the last Labour government with that recession or can't remember a Labour government at all, otherwise you'd be going back to the 1970s where you'd have to be 60+ to remember that time from a political standpoint
@@ffbear8078 National Debt under the last Labour govenment was paid off and even went negative i.e. there was no debt, this is one of the reasons the global finacial crisis didn't hit as hard as it could have...until the Conservatives got in... and mis-mananged the economy and the debt skyrocketed
@davidioanhedges of course debt is going to skyrocket after a financial crisis. Notice how every country in the past 100 years experiencing growth is in debt. National debt is not a perfect marker of handling the economy well as for example, I could pay off all my individual debt but if I'm not investing my remaining funds properly and setting myself up for success, I'm just setting myself up to go back into debt
I'm not saying the tories have handled it well btw, they've done an abysmal job but we shouldn't romanticise Blair and Brown's era as being some kind of utopia
My theory is because he knew if he waited until Autumn, Reform would keep rising in the polls, Farage might return and that would pretty much be the end of the Tories. It would be like Canada in 1993.
Unless it's an amazing manifesto backed by a legally binding delivery promise, I won't be voting Labour and discouraging others also. I will either vote Lib Dem (to stop a Tory) or my preferred candidate a Green. Starmer has shown he's a chronic policy liar 🤥
If you really want to stop a Tory in your constituency though, it's important to look at the historical breakdown for it. Since voter reform was killed we still have to work within a FPTP framework... and that means a divided left wing vote effectively helps the Tory party... it is what they are counting on.
The last time the lib Dems got a significant vote share they made a coalition with the conservatives. In which the broke one of their biggest promises of not increasing student loans Hardly a party I'll see myself voting for again, not to mention they consistently seem to try and take an angle that will garner them votes rather than even standing for anything

Martin Lewis told you this Morning why he's called the election early, The energy price cap is dropping by 7% in July, but by October the prediction is it is expected to rise by 12% and this is why he thinks Sunak has gone for an earlier election, and with the rise in the standing charge energy is going to be a lot more expensive for next winter, not a good time to have an election.
It's also important to note that on July 4th Scotland's summer holiday begins, meaning thousands of Scottish people, who are much more likely to vote against Conservatives, will be abroad or otherwise away from polling stations. It also means that polling station workers will either be abroad or have to rearrange their holiday plans if possible to account for the election.
Almost 40 years ago in New Zealand, Robert Muldoon tried to surprise the opposition when he was behind in the polls... (It backfired spectacularly). At least Sunak wasn't drunk.
He also reportedly accepted a job with a tech company in California last week. So presumably he wants to hand in his notice and move before the schools go back.
Similar to what happened in Spain last year. The day after nation-wide local elections in which the government party lost miserably, the Prime Minister called for early elections. It seemed foolish at the time, everyone thought he would be out, but when the dust settled there he was: standing and re-elected. This seems to me the same political stunt: when people within your party come after you, you have to be blunt and force the spotlight of an election so that they have to support you for the crowd.
My best guess is that Sunak thought the Tories were going to no confidence him- Calling an election _now_ essentially makes him indispensible.

Having the ability to call an election early on your terms is an insane power.
Sunak increased his wealth by 120 million in the last year. He is in the rich list. He couldn’t give a toss
California dreamin'
He's made enough contacts for him,his family and associates he can leave with his pockets full now,,there needs to be investigations on all the past pms and fellow associates on where all the monies gone,,they leave and leave their troubles behind,,and some are cheeky enough to return ie cameron etc, with a clean bill of wealth...
Simple, as the opposition voters are generally younger, he knows that most of them will be off for the summer to another country and won’t be here to vote, while his voters will be here…
I feel like not enough people realise truly how tactical such a short term election is.
@@peepeetrain8755compulsory voting is highly authoritarian and removes the entire point of having a democracy, choice
Doesn’t matter, he’s absolutely toasted

@@mzo.7333 Of course, that's more incentive to be a "former PM" sooner rather than later

Even his own team abandoned him - no forthcoming umbrella for him when it started to rain
That explains the drenched and lone speech. But he's alrite. He's rich
Like why doesn't that podium have it's own umbrella holder?
At this point Keir Starmer could literally run around Central London in his underwear with the chainsaw and still win a landslide victory
If the rodents vote at home it helps Labour, since most Universities are in big cities which tend to be comfortable Labour wins anyway.
It’s always some form of voter suppression innit? You’re going to get a +30 Labour landslide because the guy is as appealing as wet toast
it would actually help the Conservatives more if the Students were not at home. If they vote at home in rural areas they swing the vote left, in cities which are likely to be more left already, it has less of an impact. So to skew the vote with students they'd have wanted to call the vote a little earlier.
Reason 7: theres nothing left to steal from the vault
The guy can't look out of the window and work out it's raining.
dude literally said _"Peace Immout!"_ and dropped a molotov on stage.
If he is lying about having planes, staff, an airfield ready to go in mid July, this way he can blame Labour for cancelling Rwanda. Money back, please.
Money back ?. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I would laugh at how awful Sunak is, but then I remember that his predecessors were Truss and BoJo...

The real reason is that the night before- following a night of passion with Dishy Rishi- I convinced him to call an early election during pillow talk.

Shout out to TLDR for educating me about the situation in the UK, when I actually met a British person I had plenty of very British woes to talk about. Housing crisis, the lettuce incident, OORRRRDEEERRRRRR, it goes on and on.
Desperation
Best reason why Sunak called an early election: he has already decided his out-of-office Christmas vacation plans.
I'm betting he knows something that's coming down the track and wants to pull the "look how bad labour are" when the tories are out and they have to deal with it, despite it being caused by the tories
Im from Mississippi and i cannot believe Nigel actually traveled here for a Trump campaign stop, wonder if he had a good time and enjoyed our delicious Southern Cuisine 😂
I can respect this move by him, trudeau would never do this and will drag onto the last possible second
As a greek who lives in the UK, Sunak gives off Karamanlis energy from 2009. Exit the stage before the shit hits the fan, like what happened then. Karamanlis did the election just before Greece had to go to the IMF, leaving Papandreou to deal with the political fallout.
Another big reason is Scottish schools are out on July 4th which could reduce the number of Scot’s who vote
@christophersmith8990people going on vacations with families , preferably visiting some other countries.
@christophersmith8990 many families have planned holidays and will likely be outside of the country during the general election, they can vote by post but it’s just more of a hassle and many won’t go through the effort.
My guess: to turn Rwanda into a Brexit situation.

would love to see more coverage on other parties like the greens and the lib dems
Greens: Have Islamists in their party
Libdems: lied about supporting students
There you go.
Yes, they've been completely forgotten since 2019!
It's honestly baffling that TLDR News has given so much attention to Reform UK when Greens and Liberal Democrats are more prominent parties.
If you dislike Labour/Conservatives that much, just vote for the opposite party unless you happen to be in a constituency where the Lib Dems could win - and there aren't enough of those.
@@Infinitystar225The Libdems and Greens are already established parties, whereas Reform are set to win about 11% of the vote in their first general election.

TLDR: we aren't biased
Also TLDR: this entire video
i mean, how could you spin this to be any more centrist than it is
This is literally Britain at its best. Noone can pull up such a city-wide goofy turn of events while still keeping that weird goofy dignity.

Rashid Sunook calling an election ROFL
In which the broke one of their biggest promises of not increasing student loans
Hardly a party I'll see myself voting for again, not to mention they consistently seem to try and take an angle that will garner them votes rather than even standing for anything
It's incredible how many moments in British politics are exactly like a british sitcom. Attempting to give a motivating speech after a hasty political decision while wearing a soaked suit and tie, which could have easily be avoided with the slightest forethought.

Why do people hate on him? Because of his race? Because he got a bit of rain on him? He seems like a genuinely nice guy.
Because he has done a terrible job and because no one voted for him. He is a plant.
He's just planning his summer holiday
I don’t care why, the election was called. That’s a win, the quicker we can get him out, the better.
I wish good luck to the UK population from Switzerland
It's also important to note that on July 4th Scotland's summer holiday begins, meaning thousands of Scottish people, who are much more likely to vote against Conservatives, will be abroad or otherwise away from polling stations. It also means that polling station workers will either be abroad or have to rearrange their holiday plans if possible to account for the election.
Almost 40 years ago in New Zealand, Robert Muldoon tried to surprise the opposition when he was behind in the polls... (It backfired spectacularly).
At least Sunak wasn't drunk.
I'm getting the vibe that he knows he won't win, but also that something bad is coming and wants to be in opposition asap.
To be fair, his hair stays great under rain, mine turns to mush. Might be worth the vote just for that
Early? Couldn't have come soon enough honestly
I watched this video and not one mention of "you get the picture". Come on TLDR, you have a reputation to live up to!
Look on the bright side when his suit shrinks it will fit on the new Rishi Action Man 😂
Keir Starmer is the next Prime Minister of United Kingdom🇬🇧
He also reportedly accepted a job with a tech company in California last week. So presumably he wants to hand in his notice and move before the schools go back.
Sunak wanted to make hay while the sun was shining 😂
Similar to what happened in Spain last year. The day after nation-wide local elections in which the government party lost miserably, the Prime Minister called for early elections. It seemed foolish at the time, everyone thought he would be out, but when the dust settled there he was: standing and re-elected. This seems to me the same political stunt: when people within your party come after you, you have to be blunt and force the spotlight of an election so that they have to support you for the crowd.
The reporter getting kicked out 😂 what a professional
