    Van life? I'm not sure full timers can live in one. We traded off our Vilano 320 for a Thor Quantum KW 29. We have a small dog so the class c works plus it had what we wanted, king size bed, 2 air conditioners, outside TV, 4 point leveling and washer/dryer hookups. We got a bonus with 10 minute set ups and 20 minute tear downs. I wanted to get something my wife was comfortable driving if something happened to me and I could not drive anymore. The Badlands are awesome, thanks for the great tour.

      Yah, it would be a big stretch (or a SMALL one, literally) and would never choose something that would make our pups miserable 😊 sounds like a great idea for you to downsize! Badlands was quite amazing! Thanks for watching! 👍

    That's a huge rig. We are happy as a couple with a dog in a Kodiak 181e hybrid travel trailer. It's so much easier to tow than our previous trailers. We live in 4-6 months in the summer and travel coast to coast, border to border.

    • @MidlifeDetour
      @MidlifeDetour  11 месяцев назад +2

      The rig prior was a 43 foot toy hauler so this current 35 foot doesn’t feel huge to us 😊 We know something smaller would be even easier to get into those smaller spots and offer us different views. If we weren’t living in it full time we would definitely be going smaller for shorter periods of time away 👍🏻😎

    We spent the week of July 4, 2019 in the exact spot where you were, after going to town and finding where the FIRE WOKR'S would be went home to eat. It started to rain, then it rained harder, then even harder. After about an hour my grandson ask if I had rolled up the windows of the truck... You guessed it I hadn't. wet everything. but we had a great time that will never be forgotten.

    Went to Valley of the God's in Utah a few years back. Our 32' Motorhome just squeaked in the little 'dip' at the entrance. Not sure if you could get in but absolutely best dry camping we have ever had. Right where we were (no hyperbole it was about 1/2 a city block in diameter) there were 'monuments' ie pillars and closest one to us looked like Olivia Dehavilland (sp?) From Gone With the Wind In her finest Southern Belle dress....remarkable. DONT do Van! We have met many who have regretted it and those things are not cheap! My suggestion is rent one for a week or so then you will experience without big depreciation loss if you didn't like what you purchased.
    Good luck you guys! 🇨🇦

    First time watching your video. Really nice. Your question about Van Life... We have a fifth wheel and, when I retired, I wanted a teardrop trailer so my husband bought 1 for me and I used it for 3 years by myself. Then my husband decided to go with me once and he decided to buy a "couples" trailer, a Salem that is 8' wide and 17' long with a Murphy bed. We had 2 beagles, now just 1😢, but we can get into state beach camping, mountain camping, all kinds of smaller situations and have been using it for a year and love it. It also gets us out of the trailer more to enjoy nature. Enjoy and be safe and we just subscribed! 👍🏼❤️🎉

    For me, I couldn’t do class B because I don’t want to pack up anytime you drive around the park - not to mention losing your Boondocking spot….but what’s right for me, isn’t for everyone. Lots of people love that life. I’ve been told before I commit to those changes, to rent one for a week and see if it’s doable. A 5th wheel with a patio, that’s not a toy hauler is the DURANGO GOLD G358RPQ.

    • @MidlifeDetour
      @MidlifeDetour  11 месяцев назад

      It would definitely be more challenging without a tow vehicle..although our 450 is a pretty big machine! Renting something small would be a really good idea! We used to have a toy hauler and miss it! VERY LONG though! 😎

    The problem with a van is that you have the side door open...or not. We had a truck camper and LOVED it, but there was nowhere to lounge. There's no floor space for dogs. We looked at Class As and settled on the middle. Qe have a Winnebago View and it's perfect for us. Twice the usable space (or more) of a van but still nimble and fires anywhere. The "D" model would be perfect with the pups. After all, it IS their camper!

    • @MidlifeDetour
      @MidlifeDetour  11 месяцев назад

      Absolutely is all about the pups, for sure! 😉 Very true about the lounging space and love that we have that for them! We have toured through a View and do love the size! 🤔 Thanks for your input! We really value it!

    Van life works for us retirees, three years on the road enjoying the US in summer sgd Mexico in winter with our dog. We boondock almost all the time in the US ( we don’t really enjoy the badlands spot) but we don’t stay long in each place up to a week maybe. In a van we go where we like, no heavy duty off road rock hopping, but flexibility is the way to take advantage of the small space. If you like to sit still especially in Durban campgrounds you won’t like a van. Best of luck.

    We stayed there a couple of years ago - I loved it! Wow you had an amazing spot, but I’m laughing about the “new friends” who walked in front of you 😂
    Vanlife with two big dogs personally sounds like hell to me. We did full-time in a Rpod 177 and it got old. Really old. We moved up to a Grand Design Imagine 17MKE and are super happy with it. It’s less than 22’ so we fit just about anywhere. And we have a big Lab who takes up far more room than she should.
    Also we like to be able to leave our RV in a campsite & go explore. Just what works for us 😬

    Very pretty scenery. The closest thing size wise to an RV van I've had was a cab over truck camper. Though it was pretty easy to get around town, it didn't take long to feel the walls closing in plus we had to think of our four legged furry family members. Just for kicks maybe rent a camper van or small mini for a week, test it out before you decide. Wishing you safe travels

We have a German Shepherd, and do not full time. Usually anywhere from 3 to 6 weeks at a time. I don’t think we could handle two dogs in our van! But it does get you places more easily. Van life definitely has its “ups”. Speaking for me and my travels and nothing at all against vans, unless I had a towed vehicle to explore with, I think it would be very limited on parking for grocery shopping, window shopping in all he cool towns across the U.S., and any excursions I may be interested in. We have a 5th wheel smaller than yours pulling it with a Ram dually and are considering a class A with a Jeep just for parking reasons alone. Leave the class A (or van) at camp, explore/shop with ease.

    Was there a couple weeks ago on our way to Hill City. Always wanted to fly that spot with my RC electric glider and it worked pretty well. Winds 10-12 mph out of the NE was doable but straight east would be perfect. This is the scenery you usually get when doing this hobby. Tons of room to land at the top behind the campers. I could see someone develop this land as a commercial site and make some money. Good luck!

    I think your issue with downsizing will be your dogs because they are not small. I think that they will be uncomfortable in a van. However, since you already have the truck you might consider a smaller travel trailer like Airstream or a truck camper with slide outs. The truck camper can definitely take you places like a van.

      Absolutely! We think about them in all of our decisions, for sure. We really miss our toy hauler with the back patio (which they loved!)- We do love Airstream! 🤔 thanks so much for your input! 👍

      We are still having some pretty serious structural issues that will require another visit to the Tiffin Service Center or we may chase down another facility back west. If you have any questions that I can answer prior to your purchase feel free to email me directly through our contact form on our website midlifedetour.us.

    As a product of the Great Basin in the 1940s, one of the greatest pleasures in life was solitude. That is pretty much gone now with all these RV urban types. Stay the hell home. In the words of Charlie Russell “If I had my way, the land here would be like God made it, and none of you sons of bitches would be here at all.”

    You RUclipsrs are your worst enemy. Hardly anybody camp here 5 or 6 years ago. Then everyone started making youtube vidoes about this place. It's becoming a zoo. With only 70 sites you will have a very hard time getting a place in the future.

      This is a thing that no one seems to acknowledge or even comprehend ... "van life" RUclipsrs and novices are the absolute worst enemies of people who are actually trying to live as long-term van life nomads.
