Where do you start with drum electronics? The SPD-SX? The Alesis Sample Pad? The Yamaha DTX? All of them are a little terrifying. But here's a tutorial on where I think is a good place to start using the Alesis Sample Pad 4, and what to do to get into playing drums with electronics and sample pads.

Great introductory review, thanks...I've brought one sight unseen and have found many videos a bit confusing, this video told me all I needed to know...👍
About the DI, a jack/xlr cable should work the same? I have a couple of those for my mixer output and i'm already using one with an edrum controller and it works great, instead of the faint volume i get from a jack/jack cable.
Yes, pretty much! The DI is the ‘safer’ and more reliable option, but if you’re in a pinch or in your own room, a Jack - XLR cable has never let me down so far
Hi Harry, great video! - I've just received a alesis sample pad 4 and want to connect it to my alesis DM10 drum kit so it runs through the same module. Any idea how I can connect it? - And if you do, any idea what cables etc I would need. Thanks Harry!
If the DM10 has an ‘Aux’ input for playing along with your phone, you can use this with the Sample Pad 4. All you have to do is get a Jack to Jack cable and plug into the ‘Master Out’ of the Sample Pad, and then plug the other end into the ‘Aux’ input of the DM10
Great videos by the way. I have a SamplePad 4 and I want to know if you know of a way to get it to drive Loops in Garageband instead of using samples on the Card. I ask because it takes ages to switch between kits that have meduim to large samples loaded on the SamplePad. I reckon Garageband would be quicker. I have a Macbook Air and the correct cable to connect them. Mike
Thank you for checking out the video! I’ve not tried it with GarageBand specifically, but you could absolutely use the SamplePad 4 as a MIDI controller to do what you’re looking for. It’s just making sure GarageBand has MIDI
I can't seem to find the answer to one simple question: is there a way to advance to the next kit by striking a pad/trigger?
On this, sadly not that I know of. On the SPD-SX, I’m pretty sure there is!
Hey Harry lets say I have a samplepad, alesis 4. how can i use the drumsoundlibrary from ableton to play those sounds on my pad?
Great question! You can do two things - 1) use the USB MIDI to control Ableton and the sound library within. Or 2) export the samples you want and import to the Alesis SamplePad 4. I’ve got a video coming soon on how to MIDI control Ableton with it!
which kick pedal do you recommend for this pad?
My go-to is always the Roland KT-10 or the KD-7
plwai cannot find the alesis converter on the website , anyone ?
Personally, looking something I can just trigger a click & scratch guitars in my ears because the band doesn’t use tracks - Is this a good idea?
Absolutely! If you wanted to go even simpler you could do this with just a phone/tablet too without having to purchase something like the Alesis
Oh, backing tracks ....yeah, that will chow 32GB pretty quick, but that's something i would slice and loop, for re-triggering, to get more on there.
i just need something to maintain my chops, and for MIDI percussion tracking, with my kick trigger, and i have tons in my workstation.
This will definitely do that! It’s a great thing to MIDI-out to your DAW of choice, that’s usually what I do, too!
@@DrumElectric yeah,
the internal samples are for practice with headphones,
the samples on your SD card are for rehearsal and live,
and all you need the MIDI out for recording.
Being an American, when you say the Alesis is £100, my reaction is: "damn, that's heavy..."
Also, fingerprints are the reason my Scarlett 18i20 still has its screen protector after 2 years. Am I a madman? Perhaps, but at least my display is clean. 😂
Haha!! Man that would not be fun to take to gigs! 😂
That’s incredible!! I joked in the video about fingerprints.. literally covered in them now. Maybe I should’ve kept it on like you!
