9:59 I loved this part, I was so convinced he was going to peel the sticker off completely for aesthetic purposes, but then he just puts it back on right side up 😂
This video is an absolute art masterpiece. If you didn't understand what this video was about, it isn't just about making a gift for his dad. It's about his feeling of pain and rejection and abandonment. It starts as a quirky how-to-video with nostalgic feel, ie going back and forth with grainy super-8mm film quality in 4:3 aspect ratio to mimic home video/film in the 70's. But he was making a lamp with one of the most destructive hand tool one can buy at the hardware store for a lamp, which could qualify as a centerpiece for a home (aka Christmas Story movie). And it was for his dad. If you don't know, he never met his biological dad until late in life (when he successfully found his dad and went to meet him for first time and the only time in his life, ie from Neistat Bros Tv show about 10 years ago). It was one of the most emotional event for him, with fear, pain, anger. He was raised by his mom and then later with his adopted dad (Casey's dad). Video ends with him jumping off the roof, in a staged stunt, that represents him trying to make that jump in life but hindered by the weight of the sledgehammer, which represents pain, angst, anger, and other emotional baggage he has (as well as the tool of destruction). I am stunned and I couldn't quite understand why it made just an emotional impact on me after watching it, but eventually it made sense, with all the puzzles that fit together. This is not a typical Van's video, and shouldn't be interpreted as just a weird how-to-video, because it doesn't make sense. It's not his style. Instead, it's an expression, which I can share, and that many of those who didn't have their dads when growing up. Thank you for this. Amazing and truly a masterpiece for those who understood.
i think its far enough from his normal style enough that the people who are saying you are wrong asre going to look back at this video as it stands out and be able to pars it more metphorical themes. My only real critque would be how much more i enjoyed this film knowing more details of vans nesitats carrer and background/other shows. really cool to read your comment though, made it make alot more sense to me. film is super cool

Something I’ve loved when watching the HBO show and the behind the brand videos is Van’s complete and utter mania, love that it’s coming out in the spirited man
Me and my buddy used to yell “stroop” from that Neistat Bros video where they’re in Holland and Van is disgusted by their syrup. He was so funny on that show (“the padewon are young jedis in training. They even have little light sabers” when he kicked Tom’s ass in the little remote control boat challenge).
Very different to previous films, this one immediate, visceral, intense - a sledgehammer and stunts. Before - contemplative, slow, serene and deliberate with bespoke typewriter intro and ambient soundtracks birdsong and all, Zen and the art of filmmaking. Where will this lead?
now that it's been a couple days, check out the comment above by Otter.pro. another user recognized the ending as homage to the furniture guy clip. filming of this video was just as contemplative, but with the departure of the now typical style, the audience is a bit lost from the metaphors.
@@mr.9439 Hi Mr. thanks for that, the comment from Otter.pro explains a lot obviously. I didn't think that Van Neistat would arbitrarily and randomly change his style and approach and there are subtle moments throughout that hint at something more. So I figured that there were layers here I just couldn't read. It also occurred to me that, given the care Van brings to his work, this pacing and tone change is illustrative of an adeptness and skill in storytelling and making art which suggests there will be much to savour in coming films. I hope he gets many more subscribers and I should now go off and find out more about him!
Van - I'm so glad you called out that it would be more expensive than something you'd just "buy" like on amazon or what not. My son and I built desk lamps out of iron pipe one year and he gave his to his grandfather and I gave mine to my son - I think I had about $150 in materials for the both of them but it was a great way to spend time with my son and my father in law uses that lamp every time he works at the workbench in the garage. This spirited father appreciates things built that are functional and cool - also from the future since the date on the lamp was 6 - 20 - 21.
My dad passed away three years ago. It didn't matter how bright it was inside the man always used a heat lamp to work on his art and sometimes he used to use the heat lamp outside to keep himself warm while barbecuing in Chicago winters. Everyday I miss the legend.
I don't know. This might be the perfect RUclips video. But I do know this is the perfect fathers day gift. All it needs is a little personal touch, and I will find it. Because I will make this for my dad and his new rental. I honestly really do appreciate this. Not only for fathers day, but I want to get back into "Making" more gifts. I always constrain myself to drawing or something I no longer have an interest in and end up not doing anything at all. I WILL do something this time, and I like the start this idea gives me. Thank you.
Van- "I was afraid that was gonna happen because of the g'damned thing". Gravity- "Damn right, I am a thing". LOL! Glad you aren't seriously injured. Oh, about the lamp... I'm building the lamp for myself. Dad is getting a different thing. Always excellent.
