If you want to see a group who managed to do it right, check out the Spice Girls origin story. They were originally created by a label/producer, who wanted to have total creative control, but they still learned how to write songs and stuff like that. While they were being develloped, they didn't have a contract so that the label didn't have to pay them and the girls could claim unemployment benefits from the state. They still did atleast one promo concert, where they managed to impress some important people and when the label that created them wanted them to basically be a kidzbob-version of themselves and offered them a contract that would have probably been close to what TLC got, one of the girls' fathers, who was a lawyer, checked the contract and told them not to sign it. The girls then stole the masters of the music they had created so far so that the original label couldn't release it and got in touch with one of the people they had impressed during their concert. Their first hit Wannabe wasn't written for them, they wrote it themselves.

I just finished listening to what should've been Michelle Branch's 2010s follow-up album West Coast Time and it sounded like we were robbed of hearing her natural evolution into a music vet. Just because they never got officially released doesn't determine their quality. Imo, talent means nothing to have a successful career if you don't have just as strong of a management team. Taylor should bless her lucky stars she has one. Especially since she herself idolized Michelle Branch, owning a blue guitar because of her and even covering All You Wanted at Michelle's birthstate of Arizona!Eventually I'll make time to listen to Britney Spears's and JoJo's shelved albums.

Lil Nas x said when Old Town Road blew up lots of labels wanted him to sign but they all wanted the song not him, only Columbia wanted him and the song, which is why he signed with them. It seems some record labels sign artists up while they're popular but have no long-term plans for them.

Kesha finally never having to make music that Dr. Luke will benefit from makes me so happy. I followed her story since the beginning, and I truly think we got robbed of some absolutely stellar pop and pop-rock music. I'm her biggest fan.

The whole Brittany thing was one side, but this business of owning actors and artists has gone on too long. There has to be a better way to promote singers and actors. Novelists appear to have it better. This is literally slavery, controlling someone else's life for profit or to destroy them for not obeying?

idk if you do video requests but i have a video idea for you to do by the end of this year (since this year is the final year of the early 2020s)
"which artists will be the biggest one hit wonders from this decade?"
in this video, you will take like ten artists who blew up out of nowhere (no buzz, no hype) between 2020 and this year (my choices are powfu, sam fisher, saint jhn, cj, ritt momney, duncan laurence, tai verdes, stephen samchez, masked wolf, gayle, jax, nicky youre, dove cameron, steve lacy and david kushner) and talk about who will most likely escape the one hit wonder label or who will most likely be stuck on this decade and be known as one of the big one hit wonders from this decade.

Lady Of Rage (I fully stand by her being considered a west coast og goat if she wasn't screwed by death row)
Skee Lo (also should have been way bigger, he has some really underrated songs besides "i wish". Top of the stairs is an even better song, and never crossed my mind is also great)

JoJo is another artist who's career was ruined by her label. She had huge success in the early 2000s, released a bunch of hit songs and then suddenly she disappeared. I believe the label started shutting down but she was still locked in a contract for life. Even though the label basically didn't exist anymore, she wasn't able to sign anywhere else because they owned the rights to her name and voice. She was finally able to break away after a lawsuit which found that the label shouldn't have been able to bind her in a lifelong contract because she was a minor at the time they signed it. So while she didn't win any money from the lawsuit, she was able to sign a contract elsewhere and start making music again.

I wanna say something about Kesha and Desiigner. Desiigner's XXL freestyle is one of the funniest things i ever seen. He wrote a hook, realized it wasnt long enough for his time allotment, then just repeated it 5 times with a look in his eyes that screamed "please god help me, make this stop." Between him, Lil Dicky, and Anderson Paak, Dicky had the best part and thats very sad to say. His music is good, though.
Kesha has been releasing better and better albums, with songs in pretty varying styles. Her 2020 album has a great song with Sturgill Simpson called Resentment, and a very strange polka-pop song called the Potato Song that I think really shows how happy she is to be out of that contract.
