It's called "Chop Suey" because the original name of the song was "Suicide" (Shortened to "Sui" among the band members) and the record label wanted to cut (chop) the song because they didn't think it would be received well (due to the name and other things) and they refused to do it. They changed the name as kind of a malicious compliance thing. "Oh, you want us to Chop Suey? You got it, boss!"
None of that is true. Daron denied the label not liking the title. The band thought it was a lazy title, so they changed it to “chop suey”. A word used in b&w gangster movies meaning beating/k1ll1ng someone. Since it had to do with death and they had to “chop” the word “suicide”, they thought it was a wordplay. And “chop suey” was born. And no. It’s not about suicide either. It’s about pointing and judging a deceased person when their cause of death was addiction.

The song was called Suicide but they had to change it so they named it Chop Suey which is like a wordplay, suey is chopped from suicide. Something from Genius so you understand the song a little more ''The song culminates in a biblical connection to Jesus before his death on the cross, with the singer ostensibly having chosen his “self-righteous suicide” so that these ‘sinners’ would be forgiven''. So even people who didn't listen to rock/metal at all knew them, and even a lot of people who didn't like metal, were interested in their music. The Chop Suey video has more than 1 billion views (which puts them on the same level as Linkin Park) and has been voted to be the 'best metal song' of the new millennium (so far). Their music is described as alternative metal. Yes, they are quite different and unique. They combine a lot of styles like hardcore, punk, thrash, progressive, psychedelic, nu metal, alternative rock and folk. Can only recommend to dive deeper, with songs like Toxicity, Aerials, BYOB, Question....😉

I believe their idea was to literally cut or chop the song title down to make their management happy......hence the title "Chop Suey". The song is basically about how people who willingly or unwillingly cause the own deaths are perceived after they die. A strong biblical reference to Jesus Christ is at the forefront in this song. Although Jesus didn't take his own life, he willingly went to his death for what he believed. A self righteous suicide. System Of A Down is in my opinion one of the better "newer" metal bands. Hard hitting, unique and always controversial. Very political and very anti war. They have many great songs. Many of which need to be carefully listened to to capture their hidden meanings. I think everyone is a little confused the first time they listen to System of the Down, great track and it's worth checking out Toxicity but to be honest unless your a hardened SOTD fan they only really had two great songs that the average rock fan could name.
