This one was a bit of a surprise. I got one of the new 40mm Seiko 5s out of curiosity. Yet it wound up renewing my faith in Seiko. That they still have what it takes to create a great affordable everyday watch. So this is definitely one to check out, as it may be the best affordable sport watch out there right now.
The idea behind it is a little strange, as it's a smaller version of the SKX or the new 5KXs. All done up with a dressy facelift. Which is why some are starting to call it the Dress-KX. Although no matter how odd that may sound, this one is pretty good. Reference SRPE61 / SRPE61k1 / SRPE61j1 .

I really like that you show watches on plenty of different straps in your reviews.
Same here. He’s a good reviewer
He does a great job. A good, unique style.
Exactly
I think that the right strap can really make a watch. A fact that's usually overlooked by most other online reviewers.
Looks stunning on that ostrich camel strap
These are everything one needs from a watch. Does everything an Explorer does, and you can wear it, without crying over every scratch. A real working class hero.
If you mean it tells the time, then yes, it does everything the Explore does. Otherwise, no, they aren't even in the same ballpark.
It does more actually, it has day/date and the Explorer doesn’t lol
,
Lanning Kann boom roasted 👍
The explorer empties your wallet, if you can get one.
@@thisispw yeah? You’ll get all your money back & more on an explorer and it’ll still be looking good & working long after this mineral glass cheap shitter.
I used to be a scuba instructor. I'm getting one of these. Divers dive with dive computers. They are ugly and when you get out you soak it in fresh water and put it away.
I wouldn't trust my life to a watch. Nobody goes down 100 just on air. You get nitrogen narcocis around 60 and you are risking O2 tox further down.
If it's fine for swimming, it's fine.
I love this thing because it reflects that I used to dive but life moves on and this is a practical, beautiful watch.
I love the review, and love your enthusiasm. It is indeed a compelling offering.
I enjoy your reviews, from the content, to your assessment of the build quality, style, etc. I totally agree with you as to how beautiful this Seiko 40 mm 5KX with this grey dial looks. Keep up the good work, and thanks for keeping us informed as to what’s new in the watch community...Great work...Ed.
Glad you gave it your seal of approval. I have one in order through an AD in Glasgow. Should be available in Scotland towards the end of August. Looks like a versatile everyday strap monster. Really looking forward to getting my hands on one.
Thanks . I have been scratching my seiko sports issues with the occasional 60's or 70s Sealion sportsmatic etc. This seems right up my street . God vid Richard
You are doing a good job buddy. I love it when i search a watch on youtube and find a new channel through the watch. Really loved that you covered every point and every concerns that i had.
Thanks! It takes time to put these together, but I enjoy it.
Spot on, as always! That dial tho! Love it!
I am impressed by the production quality of your clip, especially the various strap choices, pro-level shots with attention to details, good lighting, your calm voice with right tone and tempo... awesome
dido, you did a phenomenal job on this video. Keep it up.
First watch I’ve been tempted by for quite a while!
I like this one a lot. Very cohesive design. I'm gonna pick one up.
Great video. This the best looking watch I could find after looking at what felt like every watch on planet Earth.
I love mine! I too think the gray is a real stunner. I immediately swapped the NATO strap for a nice soft black Berfine calf leather band. I have a few Seikos and you're right about accuracy. It's a crap shoot. This one runs just a little fast. I found a great deal on mine, but it's been out a year already. I've found if I'm patient with Seikos, I can find them around 50% below retail.
The strap it comes on actually looks incredible with that dial
Very sharp watch! It does check a lot of boxes. This is definitely on my radar.
It's a great explorer homage and huge quality.
Wonderful review, mesmerizing voiceover and awesome photography as always. On that crown issue: I don't need it signed because I'm already sure it's a Seiko by looking at the dial. I also don't need it screw down because I can easily wind and adjust it that way and there is no point of failure or wear like a thread. I like it exactly as it is - just like the rest of the watch - instant classic! I also don't understand how people consider this a downgraded SKX since it has nothing in common with it except the basic case shape and the dial layout. To me it is a far better everyday watch in every regard.
Tudor black bay 36 and 41 succeeded with this style so I think seiko probably has a winner in this price bracket. Grey dial is 👍🏻
You Sir are the Strap King!
Consistently classy reviews with sumptuous content. Thank you.
Thanks! I'm actually working on a follow-up video to this one. Strapcode finally got around to making a bracelet for the Dress-KX. So I got one, and will have a short video showing it off soon.
@@RelativeTime
That sounds good. I shall definitely tune in.
I have both the grey and green versions of this watch and am waiting on Vario to restock the 20mm Cordura Charcoal Zulu strap. That was a great choice of yours and by featuring it you could be responsible for the present unavailability ,ha. All the best for the upcoming video and I'm looking forward to another dose of class.
As a sucker for Seikos and budget timepieces in general, I am baffled as to how I have not come across your channel before. Outstanding commentary, nailing both the pros and cons of the watch, as well as referring to the context of the Seiko 5 lineup when necessary. You just won a subscriber!
Ooh I'm doing the Grey dial with the vario. Its such a good look.
5Xplorer is my favorite nickname for this watch!! That dial looks amazing.
That's a good one too.
Man... It's like you are actually speaking from inside my own head. Great vid, thanks. Got a black and immediately started scheming on how to ditch it for this beautiful grey.
my favorite Seiko, beautiful watch, i was worried about the bracelet but its a great watch. its my seiko explorer. wear it more than watches 5 times the price
I play this video every time I want to sleep 💤...that radio voice was ment for grate things
Super nice video. Always enjoy the effort you put into them, very professional...
Awesome job,great video,that strap with leather insert....wowzer😍
This is my main watch, love the size and weight. The lume lasts all night too.
Thanks for this review - honest and to the point. And I'm really temptet...I own a turtle with a gray dial identical to that one and it IS stunning!
I agree it's a great looking watch that I would like to wear.
Nice review, as it happens I really quite like this watch, it reminds me of the older Sports 100 Series (of which I still have mine from 1982 and its still running). I like the faces of divers but don't normally need the timer bezel (strangely few seem to know how to use them properly anyway). Its classy and elegant.
I'll be buying one when the prices go a little lower.
great photography love the strap changes
Thanks!
Love the anthracite dial! & that lume is great, it looked like it kept up with the Kamasu!
It's a great dial, love to see more like that.
When I saw this on Bruce's Channel, I got one right away. With the Anthesite gray dial. Mine is running -4/+4 per 24 hours. I'm sorry you're is father behind. Now I'm getting another as a backup but on a strap. That dial is gorgeous.
If these happen to go on sale during the holidays (like the 42mm 5kxs did last year) I'll pick up a second one. Maybe blue or the gilt.
Great review as always. Thanks Shane.
Just received my srpe57 the gild one and I love it. I’m thinking of swapping out the crystal but the watch is just perfect.
These models can already be found for around $125 in very good conditions. Scored this same one, but with polished bezel, plus a blue Srpe63. Amazing watch and amazing work on your video. Thanks!
That's an amazing price for one!
I’ve been searching for weeks for a “one watch” pick for everyday. I tried one of these on locally and felt it small in comparison to the seiko samurai I had on my wrist that day. As a few weeks have passed I’ve come to the realization the samurai is large and that this srpe will be perfect. I’m going to try to stop in tomorrow and pick up the one I tried on. They have a 30% off sale going right now for dads and grads so I’m taking that as a sign. Also thanks for the excellent videos! Top rate shots, editing, and voiceover. Good job man. You’ve earned another subscriber.
Thanks and welcome to the channel. I still love this watch, and I hope you will too. I've never tried the Samurai, but I think this one would be better for most days. I also recently bought a nice bracelet for mine.

@@RelativeTime that jubilee looks great on there but I’m really not much of a bracelet guy in practice. It’ll likely live most of its life on a nato like my other watches. I’d like to pick up my first decent leather strap for it though since it definitely looks great on leather. Maybe also a sail cloth strap with rubber on the inside for beach/pool wear. A silicone nato might be a possibility as well. I like how you show it on so many different straps in both videos. It looks great on everything.
Hi
well my watch arrived and I am pleased to report that its excellent. I'm pleased also with the NATO (first time to use one) and its the only watch I've used that feels comfortable on while typing.
So thanks for your review that led me to this watch, I've shared your review on my blog (something I don't normally do) and I hope that brings you a few more subscribers.
Best Wishes
"For your consideration..." :). Nice review, I really like this colorway and that stainless steel bezel. Classic styling. A very interesting and tempting offering.
I put a Pilot Bezel on my SRPD with the Beige dial and Milanese bracelet and it makes a great casual/dress watch.
Yep, I am absolutely obsessed with these, and hope to get the 57, with the gold hands and markers. Beautiful piece and popping a sapphire crystal in it is just going to make it pop. Great review, Shane!
Of course the sapphire will be more scratch resistant, but are you talking about a domed piece of sapphire? Otherwise, I wouldn't expect it to "pop" more than what already comes with the watch. Hardlex gets a bad rap, but I appreciate its clarity over sapphire. Sapphire is usually overkill on most affordable watches, but that's just my opinion.
I was tempted by the Gilt one too, but eventually the grey dial won me over.
How did the enamel dials for the Gin Clear come out?
@@RelativeTime they look absolutely stunning. I've been posting shots on instagram. Will DM you some
Hey Saen, Thanks for reviewing this watch. I really like it, and as you mentioned the gray dial is a killer. Today's price on Amazon is $220. Feb.13.2021 Keep up the great job. ps, I like the Dress KX.
Hi Shane. You have absolutely the best one, and I want yours on the grey NATO strap. The Dress KX is a perfect name for it. Great review and an excellent, very desirable watch. 👍
Excellent video. I bought the blue dial because I liked the color and contrast. I now wish I’d seen your review first, I might have looked more closely at the grey. There’s a big advantage to seeing watches in person.
I own one, and love in more than the higher end models in my collection.
I am new into watches but already have got several. And I have decided to get this model in the grey dial option. There are already modders who offer it with the mineral glass replaced with sapphire crystal. But I want it with a nice stainless steel or titanium bracelet.
getting this for my bday, ddnt expect the quality of the video thanks
Seiko Are the master in this price range
I totally agree with your both positives and negatives about the watch. I was planning to purchase the black dial with golden hands and markers version but i found my invicta 1953 which has much better looking than the Seiko, same movement etc. also has some cons(like almost 14mm thickness, weak lume and being a homage) but half price of the seiko👍
I have the blue dial one with bracelet and love it. Very flexible everyday watch. It can wear sporty or more dressy depending on the strap. Actually I think the bracelet and nato strap versions cost the same--$275 MSRP--and it's the two-tone watches that cost an extra $50. So, I think the bracelet version is a better value. I got it for around $230 from a dealer (15%) which i think is a terrific price. It's similar in design and concept to the Black Bay 36 (but naturally larger).
The first of the new series to make me look up and pay attention. Up until now I've been quite happy just to ignore them. Dropping the bezel is a great move as it probably saves cost for them. For us, it gives us something new that puts out vibes of Explorer or Black Bay for 36. With it being a 5, the day-date complication is not going anywhere but I'm fully expecting the mod part guys (looking at you Yobokies, nakomi, dagaz et al.) to bring us a new no date dial very soon.
Enjoyed the review and a very good point on the plain and non screw-down crown. I just found your review after getting the SBSA041 and SBSA061 (JDM references) for myself. I do plan to mod the glass to sapphire so it would have been easier if it is also a screwed down bezel.
Ok you got me. This one is definitely on the wishlist.
It's surprisingly good. Hopefully they go on sale for the holidays.
I was trying to do the same and wait for prices to settle but pulled the trigger on an interesting JDM version the other day. Thanks for the video.
Which JDM did you get? The gilt one?
@@RelativeTime Stumbled onto this one. SBSA061 There's a few models with this colorway they're calling the Japan Collection.
I had my eyes on this for a while but you sir, just sold me that watch.
Fantastic genre-crossing redesign that does a whole lot more right than wrong. Very happy with my SRPE53 in blue sunburst. Loving it on a shark mesh. Also had the SRPE57 “gilt” black with gold but it wasn’t quite as versatile and lacked a sunburst effect. Looks like a 61 may be in my future... :)
Blue and red dials look like child's toys or a clownshow on your wrist 💀
I've got one of these bad boys .... It really is fantastic. If you can get one, he is 100 percent right it's so surprisingly good
I've never been an SKX fan, and this doesn't make me go from 6 to midnight either!🤨 .... but thanks for the strap fashion show Shane, one or two nice looking pieces there that I think I'll be checking out. 👍👍
I wasn't an SKX fan either, which is why I wasn't expecting much. I just got sent those Armilla Perlon straps. Never been a huge fan of Perlon, but some great colors.
Got it, love it, £190 here in the UK. It looks great on a Berfine vintage red leather strap.
I haven't tried mine on red leather,. But I'm sure that looks sharp.
Good video. The gray is the best of the bunch.
Dress KX, you nailed it!
I like it! Not really a fan of dress watches, but do need to get one at some point. This seems like the perfect hybrid, and could be quite dressy on the right leather strap.
Long Island Watch now offers a double dome and flat sapphire crystal replacements for these. Pretty cool.
That's good to know. Might get a double domed for this guy.
Appreciate all the strap alternatives...
Loving my srpe57, considering upgrading the glass with an sapphire one from longislandwatch 👍 perfect piece from seiko
Glad you like it. Been thinking about upgrading to sapphire as well.
i've watched this several times. now i think I'll pull the trigger with this model. I've initially thought about an orient ray 2 (green) for a dressy-ish diver in comparison to the skx013. But I'm having second thoughts with it since i really love my skx . I even thought about buying another skx and mod it to be dressy. Then i recalled about the dresskx. exactly the dressy skx i need.
I got mine for $160 last week brand new. Great review btw. 👌
Iove the way you highlight straps , however , on this occasion I think the watch looks really good on its original NATO , they seem to have matched it up well colour wise. Seiko....just when I'm out they pull me back in...
Excellent review, thank you for helping me decide on the choice, you are the best)
I have an srpd57 and really like it but the one gripe is that it doesn’t really have much in terms of power reserve. But it’s about a 7.5/10. I do really like this graphite smoke grey one in the video
Great looking dial. It would be even better with color matched date wheels. I agree that on a NATO, without Sapphire, and no screw down crown it should be in the $150 range
I ordered an SRPE60 for my step father for Christmas. A couple of days ago, I put it on my time grapher. Other than a 0.6 beat error, it's literally running zero seconds per day! I was beside myself considering my track record with my other two Seikos, which I had to regulate myself. That being said, I am really impressed with the look and feel of the SRPE60 and am looking at getting an SRPE61 for myself. That grey sunburst dial is stunning.
O wow, that's really good. My luck with Seiko' accuracy is usually pretty bad. How do you like the two tone bracelet on the SRPE60?
@@RelativeTime Uh, not digging the bracelet lol! One of the spring bars came unseated while I was pulling it out of the box to check the movement. I thought I had it fixed and back in place. It popped out again. After some doing, I managed to get the problematic spring bar to pop in place on the case lug. They're stamped end links, so I'm sure the tolerances are off.
I'm not a bracelet guy myself. When Pete takes it to the jeweler to have it sized, I'll have him make sure the jeweler checks the spring bars.
He's a gold tone watch kinda guy and likes bracelets. In Vietnam, he wore a two tone Seiko Sportsmatic 5.
I think it looks fine without a rotating bezel, just like the Exploer l looks fine without one.
How could it even have a rotating bezel if it isn’t a diver in the first place?
I think the name EXKX would be better due to the explorer vibe it gives off. Just ordered one at a great price. Great review as always.
Mine has "made in japan" as well. Nice bonus. Also, I like the unsigned crown. It would be cool to have the presage type "S" crown, but I really really like the fine radial brushing on the crown end. It looks great, better than polished. Thanks for another awesome review! Also, I got the same gray dial but on a bracelet. The bezel is polished with the brushing in the middle, the opposite of the bezel on yours. Kinda wish I got the brushed, but I really wanted the bracelet. Even though it's folded steel, hollow end links and pressed clasp, it looks great & is super comfortable.
Crazy?! Mine does not have ”made in japan” on the dial...maybe a different lot of production? My first automatic and love the watch 💚
I think the 'DressKX' nickname is well suited for this line of watches. It pays tribute to the fact that this watch after all is a derivatative of the 5KX, albeit a good one. It's catchy and it'll probably become universal among watch collectors.
I see it as a field watch that could pass as a dress watch with a band chageup IMO.
Very thoughtful review. Thank you
Thanks!
Really like the look of that watch.
Love it 😍 very Tudoresqe (41 & 36)...but a shame they ruined the dial with the day/date. Don't get the hatred folk have for hardlex, never even scratched one in 25+ years!! Good review as always, cheers 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks for the video. I've been searching day and night for a casual automatic, with a day/date function, exhibition case-back, and brushed finish. The links provided have given myself much needed price options, as searching by model number alone has yielded little options (Only the green SRPE65 and blacked-out SRPE69 are on amazon.ca atm), The grey SRPE61 is the most attractive to me, although the blue SRPE63 is a CLOSE second. This may be my option, if only I can get my hands on a brand-new SRP709, it hits my criteria+1, due to the arabic numerals.
Glad you found it useful. Supposedly these are getting a little harder to find as more people discover them.
I was pushing for the moniker of “DJX” or “D5X” for a play on Date-Just-X or like you were saying Dress-5[K]-X.
Thanks for the review!
We’ll see which one wins out in the end, although DJX has a nice ring to it.
I can't unsee that GIANT dust particle on the second hand 💀 glad all 3 of mine are flawless
That's the problem of buying a macro lens. Sometimes what you see can't be unseen.
I am tempted to pick one up, but I will wait a little bit longer.
Worth keeping an eye on. Last year there were a number of the 42mm 5kxs on sale for about $160 during the holidays. Hopefully these do the same.
I just bought this watch and ordered a haveston grey nato!
love my gilt version, came on bracelet, but has since been swapped. it really is nice.
Gilt looks great too. How is the bracelet?
@@RelativeTime I have the bracelet. It's actually not bad. Folded rather than solid links, but really quite heavy. If there wasn't a seam on the links you might think they were solid. Better than some of the older Seiko 5 bracelets.
The gun metal look to the face of the watch looks really good. I do think a nice solid stainless steel bracelet will bring it up to a decent looking casual dress watch. Good find.
Supposedly Uncle Seiko has one that should work. I think it's supposed to be for the Omega Speedmaster. It might be worth checking out, but I'd be surprised if Strapcode didn't have something soon.
I bought the Uncle Seiko Beads of Rice bracelet for the Omega Speedmaster for my SRPE61. I just had to slightly bend the hollow end link tabs. I think it looks pretty good.
I am going to have to get one of these, its beautiful, great video thanks
Thanks, I’m glad you liked it.
Seikos Rolex Explorer. No bezel means no bezel alignment issues, Halelulia. Perfect one watch collection
Just picked up the green one and I’m buying the blacked out one next 😍
This will be my strategy once they fall in price. Once we can grab them for $150, these watches will be no-brainers and super easy to collect.
Thank you for the video, super job. As a result I bought the same one. Can you tell me if your rotar is extra noisy? I have 7s26s and a 4r36 which seem much quiter. Perhaps it's the display case back, seems a bit rattley. Would appreciate if you let me know.
Love your reviews, this one is a homerun, sleek and versatile, i just think new Seiko 5's are a bit overpriced for what they offer.
Thanks. Unfortunately that pretty much describes any new release from Seiko these days.
The dressKS nickname is awesome.
have the other gray one (67K1) with the brushed case face/bezel instead of mirror finish and I think it's even slightly dressier. It's become my everyday watch (fighting for the spot with the Orient Kamasu which I also love to wear on a regular basis). Not sure if I'll also get a compass-less Alpinist (that should get released in a couple of weeks) as it's probably going to feel very similar to this
I have the silver green 5kx , which I've enjoyed, but the diving bezel doesn't make sense to me considering the 100m water resistance. These new dress-KXs fix that problem by shrinking it to a 40mm and getting rid of the bezel.
I would honestly switch my 5kx for this silver shadow one any day of the week.
You picked a belter, looks the dogs for an everyday piece....⌚🏴⌚🏴
I'm going to be frank. Can't tell if you are insulting it or praising it.
Good, thorough review. I really like my SRPE61. I am seriously looking into adding a Sapphire crystal.......Mine "seems" to be gaining 5-6 sec a day......which I'm happy with.
That's not bad. I'll wait until the Hardlex gets scratched up a bit before swapping it out, but I think it'd look amazing with a domed sapphire.
I heard that. I just ordered one from a seller that said it’s new, but returned bc the buyer said it was too fast. I’m used to the waiting game with autos to see their true “speed”. I hope it’s not super crazy fast. I can live with 30 secs a day. All my watches are on rotation anyway 👍
Lucky you! Mine is gaining 100 seconds a day! Not sure if I'm returning it or try to fix it. :(
@@miguelfm that's above the movement tolerance, you should return it. It's defective
Thanks,
i pick one.
