Superb. This work should be played way more often.

For me Lutoslawski is the last and best classic composer of the contemporany music...

Personally, I'm not a huge fan of loud and intense symphonies that aren't cohesive. I love Tchaikovsky's 4th symphony because it feels much more consistent, which is probably due to the romantic era, as the modern era brought in a lot of unique styles.

Jax TV Tchaikovsky certainly has a totally different harmonic and textural language which has its own enchantments and I love as well, but trust me this symphony is just as cohesive and motovically developmental - it’s just a bit subtler as lutoslawski doesn’t hit you over the head with it. My issue with Tchaikovsky is I get bored the more I listen to it. Whereas pieces like this one always reveal new little details and connections that reward repeated listening.

@@JaxYTB This symphony is cohesive what are you talking about

@@JaxYTB That last movement for example, is built entirely on three ideas: the skittish rhythmic woodwind motif shortly after the outburst at the beginning (20:04), the string theme (20:49), the flippant solo violin theme (21:01- this theme is especially important because it recurs throughout the movement in many different guises like at 23:49, 24:25 and 24:52. The section from 23:05 to 23:19 is a more agitated and riled-up version of its more benign first appearance at 21:01 to 21:14). The entire fugato section of the movement also combines the first two themes. So, yes, it is a very coherent work!!

yes, he was but he was also massive brain.. if you see his scores You will se his enormous mathematical way of thinking. he (and Andrzej Panufnik) was the very best examples of conrtuctive, architectural attitude in composition. what is most fascinating about Lutos are his artistic changes over his lifetime. This is very early piece of him (as well as Symphonic Variation, his diploma from 1938 - check it out) then what is worth to listen is middle period (Funeral Music, aleatoric 2nd Symphony) and ESPECIALLY his late scores from late 70' and 80' (Chains II, III, Cello Concerto, 3rd Symphony) The way his constructed melodies, harmonies, rythmmic stuctures.. mindblowing. I've just read book about his artistic quests, and musical aesthetics
