  • Jack Ma, the founder of Alibaba, recently came out endorsing the “996” practice, which means working from 9 AM to 9 PM, 6 days a week. But do ordinary Chinese people agree with this practice? We hit the streets of Beijing to find out.
The opinions expressed in this video are those of individual interviewees alone and do not reflect the views of ASIAN BOSS or the general Chinese population.
Special thanks to our Asian Boss team in Beijing.

You don't have to be a rocket scientist to realise that working 9 to 9 6 days a week is not sustainable. If people are single and that passionate about their work than why not, but if you're wanting a worklife balance, which most of us are, then this is not going to work. On top of that, you need to consider that the commuting time to and from work could easily add another 1.5 or more hours. If you're getting home about 10pm then what time left do you have left for yourself your your partner or family? Very little

@shirlentsu 发noyami I work from 10 am to 6 pm for 6 days. Sometimes till 7 pm. And I've a problem working extra hours if I'm not paid for extra hours. This isn't because I'm lazy but i have no time for myself. Working 6 days is already tired and stressed so who one earth will work 996.It's like torturing our health.

I worked in retail 6 days a week for 48 hours in one company. In other company 6 days a week for 50 hours sometimes it can extend until 70 hrs a week (with no rest days). And I was on a shifting schedule too - I skipped meals and I had little sleep sometimes. We had no really health benefits, no night differentials, minimum to slightly above minimum wage. I asked myself, what's the purpose of all of these? My routine was work - staff house and sometimes church (once in 3 months or once in a blue moon). But I was used to it and loved the chaotic lifestyle until my health was at peril.
At the end of the day when I was at the hospital? Nobody visited me from the HR department and they didn't even processed my social security. I also noticed that you can be replaced anytime and sentimentality is not entertained once an employee resigned. I mean, yes we held despidida party or felt sad that s/he'd be going away. But the next day s/he's gone? We continued on our work as if nothing happened. We tend to forget that that person even existed in the company in the first place.
To be honest, I understand that 2:49 , 4:00 sentiments.

As a default you should try to avoid these companies, and if you do end up working for them, you shouldn't be pushing yourself to please them. People complaining about 996 should really see Chinese high schools. When I was in high school, classes started from 7 am until 8:30 pm, 6 days a week, even that was pretty lose comparing to boarding schools like 衡水(Hengshui), where students get up at 5:30 am for morning exercise, with a book in their hands. Sometimes classes last till midnight, 7 days a week. Everything for the 高考(Gaokao, college entrance exam). Competition in not just China, but all over east Asia is just BRUTAL.

Some retails have 'almost' this type of practice. I tried 2 comapanies in retail: the other was 8 hrs 6 days a week. The 2nd one was 52 hrs (6 days) sometimes 70 hrs a week (if no restdays) esp on peak seasons.
I was on a shifting sched. And usually doing night shifts for overtime (because I'm single haha). But there are no night differentials, no health benefits really 😐
Got sick and the HR didn't even processed my sss. 😐

The words for "happy" (gaoxing) and "high salary" (gaoxin) are quite similar. Whereas "salary" in general sounds completely different. I wonder if this is coincidence.

When I was single and work in Beijing in 2008, my working hours were 9AM-8PM-6days per week, if I needed to work overtime, it will be 9AP-10PM-7days per week. The company provided food and accommodation, also have bedroom in company. The salary was acceptable, but actually I don't have much time to spend the money. Sometimes I just eat and sleep in the office. At that time I feel quite happy, because I am single and I like my job. But when I have a family, it is impossible to keep working like this. This is the work of single young man.

As a 22 year old Male living in the United States , working for a big company ... I would prefer to work 5 days a week , as many hours as possible ( 8+ hours daily ) .. in reality its true most of us work 5 days on average in a week , 40hours a week ( had one job 6 days a week doing construction 12hours a day & I loved it just wish I had 2 days off ) .. my company & many more are real strict here on the overtime hours & keeps tracks of everyone overtime & if one exceeds 40hr they will send you home early so you won't pass 40hr to get overtime which is upsetting most of the timd for those who depend & work hard to earn that overtime .. I believe this work ethic is great because no one is being force nor should they ever be to work somewhere, so I believe companies shouldn't imply this only towards those who wish to work more for a higher income

those who said that working the 996 was difficult for your health are correct, the way I look at it is what good is it to have wealth if you don't have good health to enjoy your life, working long hours is very stressful and causes a of of illness. I don't like exchanging my time for money but I have to live so I try to work at a job that I enjoy doing and if I make enough money to live on then I'm happy. Young people need to learn how to invest the money they make so they don't have to rely on anyone for their retirement...

I'm dutch and we work far far less, 9 to 5 or 6 is normal. We also work part time, like when we get kids so we can take care of them ourselves, men too. We have many holidays and paid vacation. Yet work productivity is high, just that you work long hours doesn't mean you work as efficiently and well as a well rested happy person. We are happy, our kids are happy. It used to be that a guy would go out to work and his wife took care of everything else, so he could work long hours, now if a person would manage to work 996, who would be doing all the rest of the work at home? Would you even know your kid? Humans are not machines.

What choice in China do they have when theres so much competition everywhere, and half the companies in china are implementing and forcing you to work a 9 9 6? Theres no where else to turn to.

Everyone wrapped around with the idea that “the work is the fulfillment” but your work could be gone come tomorrow, next week, next year or the next decade. Then what? Your mental state would come crashing down with the thought of No Work, No Purpose and that’s a very dangerous mental ideology to conceive because of this bizarre social construct they’ve now allow adapt into the work culture.

Health! Finally people are noticing that burning a candle at both ends and the middle will contribute to an early death. Working 30 hours a week is much healthier with plenty of money to live comfortably while living an extra 30 to 40 years. YES, 30 -40 year longer lifespan to enjoy the richness of Life, Love & Joy. Nobody looks back and says "I wish I worked harder and longer hours. "
