My tabby cat- passed away last night- she was intelligent. Knew commands and understood words. Very affectionate towards humans but not animals. She was a very sweet soul. I was so impressed with how easy it was to train her to fetch and follow commands including non-verbal commands like tapping on a surface is a command for her to come to the top of that surface. She was loved and will always be loved and missed.

Your brilliant tuxie is probably a domestic shorthair (DSH) mix, which goes to show that hybrid vigor is real, especially where intelligence is concerned. FWIW, I have never met a tuxie who wasn't extremely clever and resourceful, so I'm also a big fan of DSH kittehs with this coat pattern.

I had a tuxedo cat before he was quite lazy. However despite most cats in my experience he was actually very timid and didn’t mind if someone were to come over to him and just pick him up for no reason, in fact he wouldn’t even try to escape when I picked him up. He would kind of just lay in my arms no matter what position he was in. He was such a sweet and calm cat not very active or playful he simply just liked sleeping. Tbh he was so comfortable with being held and sleeping in peoples laps till the point I though something was wrong with him, that’s how timid he was.

What about the Maine Coon? 🤔 I had 4 Maine Coon cats staying at my home for a couple of weeks, while their owners went on a vacation.
And I'm pretty sure that those 4 little "smartasses" had something to do with their owners finding the need to take a break! 😆 All four of them *ACTUALLY* worked together by letting two of them distract me while the other two SILENTLY stole all the cat-snacks from the kitchen! I shortly afterwards caught them feasting in their secret hangout inside a empty cabinet, which they could access from an unseen gap! Through out those 2 weeks they systematically figured out different ways to make my life a hell! 😩 For exapmple, tricking me into keeping the doors to restricted rooms open long enough by having one cat making a noise from across the room - and while I was directing my focus away from the door, 3 cats could sneak in faster than the speed of light! 😂 And they OBVIOUSLY somehow knew EXACTLY when I use to clean the litterbox, and always waited until I had sanitized it to perfection before they released a quadrouple nightmare turning my lavender-fragrant sandgarden masterpiece into a poop-mine of smelly stink-treasures... 😑
THEY ARE LITERALLY EVIL GENIUSES! ...But I loved them anyway 🥰 I actually miss those little hooligans! 🤗😼😼😼😼

Someone dumped an Abyssinian mother and her young kitten outside our apartment and drove off. We found the mother a home and my sister took the kitten. He has opposable thumbs (so did his mother). It's actually really freaky -- he can grasp a cabinet handle like a primate. The other cats go to him when they want something "off limits" opened.

I have owned a smart Maine Coon. He was pretty smart about most things. And had a very dog-like behavior. But then I got a Siberian cat (it's an ancestor of the maine coon breed, Siberian, Norwegian forest cat, and maine coon are the 3 arctic cat species). The Siberian is almost frighteningly smart. Way beyond anything I've ever seen or heard about in cats, or any other pet species. It's something which has to be seen to be believed. Her vocabulary skills are so high that I don't even know how to explain it. Even spelling things is not sufficient encoding for private talk. It's like having an 7 year old child. Sounds like an exaggeration, but it's not. I have no idea if it's species-wide with Siberians, or I have an outlier.

I agree all cats are smart and can be trained. I've had a variety of cat breeds but nothing compares to the Bengal and Norwegian forest cats that I've had. The Bengal would open doors and let herself out she would also routinely call our other two cats over for a conference and then talk with them and then send them away using only words. The Norwegian loves going on walks tells me if I am over cooking my breakfast, and turns lights off and on during the day. Additionally even though she was a small kitten at the time she immediately took command of our other two adult cats from the first day they met. She disciplines the other cats if they don't come when called as well.

During my childhood, over time we had 5 Siamese (generally two at a time). Personalities varied, but all were highly intelligent. As an adult, my first Siamese was very smart, and fairly aggressive. 2nd generation, I had a "pure" Siamese that was bright, but extremely lazy. (He could solve puzzles and deal with closed doors, etc., but was generally not very motivated. He had diabetes and quickly learned to jump onto a stool (for his insulin shot) before meals. A second cat at the same time had Siamese marking, but long hair, and was a "rescue" cat. Bright and resourceful, but not always quite as bright as other Siamese. Third generation was very bright but rather shy about strangers. Opened cabinets, doors, and was amazing at finding hiding spots. Now have two Bombay cats. Very social and loving cats. Reasonably intelligent, but do not have the puzzle solving skills exhibited by the various Siamese owned before.

@Wilhelm Otto Dusseldorf So true. My first Siamese, had lived with me 3 years before I got married. It took him nearly a year before he "accepted" the "new human" in the house. Intelligently, my wife did not 'push' herself with the cat (who had a reputation of ripping people's arms off)... Eventually, one day, he jumped up and sat in her lap (briefly and she did not touch him) ... step by step, he eventually fully accepted her in the home... but it took a very long time.

The person who owned the trees came to thank us! He saw her in action and was amazed at her tenacity, strength, and cunning! When he was done he even tried to flush the toilet and spun the t/p on the floor. I thought it was hilarious but my mom not so much! Never had a cat that smart since Tylo, he was very special!!!

You need to add Manx to the list. They're smart, active, agile and loves lots of vertical space and jumping. They love to interact with their human companions. Can be taught tricks, and are highly curious. They are vocal but have a soft purr like trill. Also when they purr it is so soft it is almost unnoticed. They love other animals to interact with, including dogs, cats and other household pets. They are a lap cat who loves to be petted, and will sit in your lap for as long as you sit.

    MAINE COONS
Literally had my Maine coon help me find a lost dog once.
When commanded to stop scratching our furniture and pointed to a scratch post he was the only one of our three cats that figured out the scratch post was where he was supposed to scratch and consistently ever since then has scratched there
One time he came on to our bed with dirty feet and we kept repeating to him over and over that he needed to clean his feet before he came onto her bed again cuz the bed was all dirty and he kept looking into her eyes trying to understand what we were saying and we pointed to our feet and we kept saying clean your feet and finally he started cleaning his feet I'm not even kidding
If told not to touch our food he doesn't if told to get down he does he understands more English than any cat I've ever known.
NOT ONLY THAT but if he had been trained younger he would have been an amazing therapy cat.
We had one of our best friends pass away in our living room with his girlfriend. Snivo was in the room with them when they passed away and whenever the ambulance is came and there were about 20 people family members and Friends standing in front of the house crying he was out on the road farther than his territory and he was just walking in between all of our legs rubbing up against us and meowing and finding the person that was the saddest and going to them.
Time I raise my voice he starts meowing at me to tell me to be quiet and to calm down and when I get angry he like pats me and tries to tell me to calm down. When I start crying really hard and get really upset and lost in my own head he will meow and tap me and just stand there and rub against me he is the most intelligent cat on the planet in my opinion

Devon Rex is another smart breed. They're more muscular in build than the Cornish Rex and can easily jump into the higher shelves in tall cabinets and bookcases and can esily jump onto your shoulders from the floor and your shoulders are their favorite place to perch so BEWARE. Devons are also notorious for interacting with your face and pretty much treat the rest of you as transportation for your head. Devon tails are always active so it's not a good measure of irritation. And they're generally, males in particular, quite demanding of constant attention, even if it's just sitting on your lap. If you want a cat that stays aloof, the Devon Rex is NOT your kind of cat. A friend of mine, a dog owner, accurately summed up a Devon Rex as a Jack Russell terrier that poops in a box, lives on your shoulders and gets into all the places a Jack Russell cannot reach. Vacuums and noises generally don't scare them. Because of their thin coats, they insist on sleeping under the covers with you in bed and forget about putting your thermostat below 72 degrees if you want to keep them healthy. And be ready to perform regular ear cleaning and care. It's NOT optional.

My cats are Tonkinese which is technically included, as it is a cross between Siamese and Burmese, which are both on the list. Dear heavens they are brilliant, and I can’t imagine a human providing such enlivening and delightful company. In the absence of language mine created their own language using physical gestures on the spot-much like an incredible game of charades-and as such I am never at a loss for knowing what’s on their mind, and there is a considerable and brilliant amount to express.
Keep in mind that intelligence always carries along with it a strong will and a need for stimulation. If you work constructively with the strong will instead of trying to dominate it, and provide excursions that provide stimulation (as my cats are indoor cats I took them into our garage, or outside to our car or enclosed deck or a walk in a pet stroller) they are heaven on earth to live with.

Our daughter got a beautiful long haired kitten from a litter down the street from where they lived many years ago. There were a lot of apartments and strays around there and 10 yrs later our other daughter moved into the same area and picked out 2 kittens who looked the same as her sister’s cat 10 yrs before. We found out years later they were Maine Coon cats and although not purebred that part of their breed was dominate. All 3 of those cats lived very long lives, i believe The elder male lived to age 21 and was well over 20-21 pounds. The 2 females 10 yrs after the male was born was also well over 20 lbs and one passed away last year at 19 yrs and the other just passed away also over 20lbs. They were
3 of the smartest cats i’ve known. They all had polydactyl front feet…extra toes that looked like boxing gloves.😁They used these interesting paws to break into cupboards, and open doors. Nothing was off limits. The male was allowed to go outside until he brought rats and birds home for mom. From then on he was an inside cat. I love MC! (Truth be known i also had a mixed breed Maine Coon in 1976) beautiful 24 pound fella!
