  • Thumbnails. Be definition, a thumbnail mineral specimen is a specimen defined mostly by its size. A proper thumbnail must be able to fit into a 1” x 1” x 1” cube (a Perky box) and, because of their size, they have a much higher chance of being a perfect specimen. Formerly considered a novelty mineral collecting size, high-end thumbnails have become greatly in demand with a corresponding spike in their price tags.
In this film series, produced back in 2011, Show Host, and avid thumbnail collector, Jim Houran sits down with a series of fellow thumbnail collectors and they talk about their collections and share the stories behind their key specimens. While we're listening to the stories behind each piece, we’re visually treated to full-screen video footage of the pieces rotating 360 degrees - often revealing details not previously noted.
In Volume 2 of this series, Jim sits down with thumbnail collectors Alex Schauss (Tacoma, Washington but now relocated to Tucson, Arizona), Thomas Moore (Arizona) and Allan Young (filmed in Denver, Colorado). They talk about their different collecting philosophies, their different focuses within the thumbnail world and the, sometimes, quirky stories behind how they acquired these wonderful specimens. But above and beyond it all, what comes through most clearly is their passion for thumbnail collecting.
So join us for a two-hour romp through the collection of three passionate thumbnail collectors. Who knows? You might become one too!
SPECIAL NOTE: We are releasing this film so that it is FREE to the public via RUclips. This is in reaction to the current new Coronavirus pandemic that is sweeping the world. So in this time of self-isolation, we at BlueCap Productions wanted to try and provide at least a little relief to the mineral collecting community with this free copy of this film. Please enjoy and be safe.
