    Adding a bit of butter while it's still hot might be a good idea as I feel butter is an important flavour component to grilled cheese.

    • @ChenKaifeng
      @ChenKaifeng 6 лет назад +102

      OccasionalVlogger It's JUST as important as the cheese! Otherwise you're just having dry toast with cheese.

      I wonder if you add a super thin layer of butter on the inside of the sandwich, then add the cheese. The cheese should (maybe?) help to keep the butter in the bread, and you'd still get that buttery flavor, but shouldn't cause any issues in the bag.

    • @honeyyb
      @honeyyb 6 лет назад +4

      Maybe you could toast the bread just enough to get hot, butter one side, then make the sandwich with the dry side out?

    My friend uses them in their toaster to keep gluten free bread from being contaminated. They live in a small place no real room for two toasters so this is a safer easier way for them not to cross contaminate toast.

    I have a toaster oven.
    I grew up with a rule: If it doesn't fit in the toaster oven, you can't eat it. I got really creative with the Totinos Pizzas. I could get two suckers in there on one pan.

    • @Nirrrina

      Pizza Tetris.
      Might I recommend a round table top pizza cooker. It Cooks pizza, reheats pizza better than new & so many other things. Like pizza rolls, bread rolls, pot pies, grilled cheese, hamburgers. Frozen food snacks like meatballs, mozzarella sticks, fried pickles, and anything that will fit.
      Seriously though reheated pizza is just as good if not better than when it was delivered.
      I use mine instead of my oven. Keeps my apartment from heating up. Belle is the brand I got. It's a red color with two lights on top.
      Unfortunately though there's no auto shutoff. But it's still going good after years of constant use. Including accidentally leaving it on all night.
      It's the best kitchen purchase I ever bought. Things also cook faster since it heats both top & bottom.
      It is a bit of a pain to hand clean though. Soni just wipe it down good after cooking. Then wash it when needed.

  • @Iampatrix
    @Iampatrix 6 лет назад +216

    On most toasters the dial doesn't adjust heat, it's a timer. Because more time = more toasted but the temperature stays the same.

    • @momof2momof2
      @momof2momof2 6 лет назад +6

      My toasters have always had adjustable heat, and I've had many a toaster.... cheap ones, expensive ones.... I think it just depends on what brand you buy

    • @Iampatrix
      @Iampatrix 6 лет назад +56

      Or you just assumed it was a heat adjuster this whole time. Look it up, it's not a timer in minutes, but it's time based. A toaster works by passing an electrical current through metal making it red hot, for it to regulate the heat it would require sensors like an oven to turn it off and on. I'm sure there's some toasters out there that actually do that but the majority you find will not.

    This seems pretty great for anyone on a super strict budget like students and people living paycheck to paycheck.
    Buy a loaf of bread, buy a block of cheese, buy those bag things and boom, meals for the cheap. After the initial purchase of the bags, it would be less than $5 for a loaf of bread and some cheese! And toasters aren't much, I've seen some on sale at department stores for like $10 and most of those stores have coupons and things to lower the price even further. I could see adding some extras in there to spice up the flavour, maybe some tomato slices, onion slices, some sliced pickled jalapenos, even maybe buying pepper jack cheese rather than normal american cheese would be neat. Plus you would save the water of washing all those extra dished when you are frying a grilled cheese in a pan, and you could always slap a little butter on the outside after its done toasting to get that buttery flavour.

    • @ohaunnameyer2185
      @ohaunnameyer2185 6 лет назад +24

      Grilled cheese sandwiches, baked potatoes, mashed potatoes, homemade baked fries (really anything with potatoes), rice, beans (the dried kind that you have to soak. A little more work but well worth it), carrots are always really cheap where I live, tortilla pizzas (tortilla, pizza sauce, and cheese with optional toppings then baked until crispy), quesadillas, oatmeal (not the individual flavored kind but just some plain old fashioned oats by Quaker are around $3 and you can flavor it yourself), and chicken. All of these are very cheap meals. If you ate these type of meals you could seriously get away with spending just 50 dollars a month on food.

    • @Squiddlezz
      @Squiddlezz 6 лет назад +10

      Same here, a 10 pound bag of potatoes shouldn't cost you more than $4-$5 and that's if they're not on sale, oats are pretty cheap, usually less than $5 for name brand and if you go store brand which I learned that for the grocery I go to is actually just re-branded name brand oats, its only $1.50, so those are always good options, but for people living in dorms, potatoes are probably not really an option, because you cant exactly bake in an oven or boil a pot of potatoes in a dorm, so having something like these bags and a bit of creativity about what you can put in there would probably be beneficial. I even had a friend who lived in a studio apartment where the oven on the stove just didn't work and the landlord wouldn't fix it, so baking anything was out of the question for her unless she wanted to invest in a pretty large toaster oven, which she didn't have the money for, so everything for her was either microwave, toaster, or stove top and that really limits the potential of any frozen pizzas that couldn't go in the microwave, but her mom got her a crock pot one year for her Christmas present and she sure as heck learned to make a mean batch of crock pot oatmeal.

    • @5mincer
      @5mincer 6 лет назад +5

      Btw you can boil a small portion of potatoes in the microwave. Works great if you are only cooking for one person.
      And yes, plain old oatmeal is a great cheap option (especially good with some sliced apples, also cheap where I live).
      And rice and carrots.
      To keep things interesting I always buy the vegetables that are on sale that day.
      (also this is coming from someone living in a dorm without an oven or toaster so I only use the stove and the microwave)

    I've used these for years, but never for grilled cheese sandwiches.
    Get a large tortilla, layer some sharp cheddar cheese into a 3" by 5" rectangle, do the same with a layer of grilled chicken (I use a mexican inspired marinade) and a layer of sautéed peppers and onions. Fold the tortilla around the fillings into a little envelope, pop it in the toastabag and toast until both sides of your envelope are golden brown.
    Boom, fajita hot pocket. Cut it in half and serve with sour cream and your favourite hot sauce.

      If she used naturally aged cheese (aged for at least 6 months) such as cheddar or Swiss cheese, which she said she prefers anyway, they have only trace amounts of lactose left and are usually easily digested by people with lactose intolerance.
      So she could have put more cheese on, in a type she actually likes, enjoyed the food, and shown viewers how well the bags work if you're using sliced hard cheese as well (which doesn't stick to the bread like plastic cheese & could all fall to the bottom).

    You can add butter to the bread before you toast. No liquid means don't try to heat stuff like soup or sauce. I use the spray "can't believe it's not butter " on both sides of my bread of choice. I put two slices of cheese and sometime I spread a little mayo. I cut the sandwich in half and use both bags. I put the toaster on the lowest setting once It pops up, I turn the bad over and toast again. That way It toasts evenly. It makes a good grilled cheese that way almost tastes like it's made on the skillet

      may how exactly would you adjust the temperature? The average toaster is just running a current through metal. Red hot is red hot generally speaking. That doesn't mean the dial is necessarily by minutes though, that's why most toasters don't use numbers, just shades of toastiness. More time = more toasty, either way the temperature stays the same.

    I bought this item. It worked ok. Can't have the sandwich stay too long, so I found that 2 worked the best. The instructions are minimal, but the bag is only good for so many times. But it was inexpensive and did work as advertised. Didn't try anything but grilled cheese in it though.

    I absolutely LOVED these when I was in a dorm! We only had a stand up toaster in the mini kitchen on our floor to share with everyone. No toaster oven. No oven. No stovetop. These made it possible to reheat things that would be gross in the microwave! And I made the best grilled cheese by buttering the bread. The bags wash well, but you have to pinch the corners while washing (wash toward one corner at a time) so they don't tear. Even after tearing they still work, they just won't keep lots of loose food like frnch fries all secure if the side is torn open. Still works to cook everything fine even with the side torn open; just grab the stuff before it spills when you remove from the toaster.

    Wow! Nice to know these are a thing. Ive been wrapping my cheese sandwiches (sometimes with ham, tomato, pepper, salami, ect) in baking paper for ages (i flatten it a little with the palm of my hand to fit it in my toaster)
    It always worked perfectly but it's a little wasteful since you only get two wrappers out of one sheet, so investing in these might be a better option :D

    2 several years later in the army using a toaster to grill steaks by drilling drip holes in the bottom and hanging thin steaks vertically in the slot using a couple of baked potato skewers /mini kabob rods

      Jean Fox except many toasters are made to hold one slice of bread and a sandwich is two slices plus cheese and the bag. So more than double what you normally put in. I've had toasters (crappy ones, but still) that didn't accommodate a bagel half, so definitely wouldn't allow for a sandwich.

    You can butter the bread using these as long as you're not smearing it thick. Doesn't mess the bags up anymore than using them for reheating fries.
    Not a note on the toaster bags, but on "regular" grilled cheese sandwiches. Try using a thin smear of mayo (not miracle whip) instead of butter for the 'lube' on the outside of the bread. Gives the sammich a whole new level of taste.

  • @pinoyriot15

    I use these all the time at work since we don't have a toaster over. I use it for anything that you need to bake. Works great for Pizza, Pupusas, Paninis, etc. Butter and other fats are fine, just don't need a lot of it. they just don't want the bags to leak. they're aren't necessarily made to be water proof.

    Emmy you can make grilled cheese in the toaster without the bags. You lay your toaster on its side and make two open faced grilled cheese. You can eat them open faced or put them together for a whole sandwich. And you can butter the bread before toasting. I taught my nephew to make these. Grilled cheese is his favorite. He's not ready to use the stove and is to impatient to wait for someone to have 5 minutes to make him his grilled cheese. So this is what I came up with for him. He loves it.

    Most bread(s) will not fit 2 to a bag or toaster slot. You have to shop around for small, square, thin bread. Also, a grilled...or toasted cheese needs to be buttered. The bags do work pretty well on pizza. Heats the toppings, makes the crust a little crispy.

    Easier way to do this is, toast the bread then put the cheese on it when finished...put it in the microwave and heat for like 3 sec on each side or until cheese is melted. U can tell when it is done. It's soo good too and soft at first then hardens but still awesome I eat it like that alot.

    I absolutely adored these bags. We had them a while back and I made everything with melted cheese as opposed to grilling them in butter or in a toaster oven. Only downside is it doesn't actually last that long for me. Maybe it's because I often overfill the bags and toast things too long. Still recommended though.

    You know the settings on toasters are usually (or as far a I know) not heat settings but time settings. Also, if you only use one part of the toaster you have double heat on the side facing the middle, therefor you need to stop the toaster midway and turn the toast.

  • @BLTwitch
    @BLTwitch 6 лет назад

    A little known fact, the numbers on the toaster actually are for the amount of time the toaster toasts for, not for the temperature level. The temperature stays the same (unless someone just used the toaster before you and its still hot), it just goes for longer the higher you put the dial at.
