Hey Emmy! I’m a cake decorator and I thought I’d pass along a quick tip to make your icing experience easier. If you freeze your layers before frosting you won’t have to worry about the cake cracking or pulling apart when you frost. The moisture from the boxed cakes make them a nightmare to frost at room temp. Hope it helps! Love your channel!!
Tiare Lefotu you just saved my birthday haha thanks 🍰
Thank you!!!
Thank you for the advice! 😊
Also plopping a big glob of icing on the middle of the top of the cake helps icing easier. Work your way down ☺💙☺
Or you could not use box mixes lol. That's not real baking
If you warm the tub of the frosting for a few seconds, it makes it easier to spread and you avoid the breaking and spreading of the crumbs to the rest of the cake. 😊 I love your videos. 💖
Samantha M You can also freeze the cakes slightly to make them more firm!
Thanks for the tip. 😊
Samantha M I like your idea better, i don't like the idea of freezing the cake.
Your videos make me so happy. You're such a wonderfully pleasant person.
Beer Grunt my sentiments exactly!
😊
Beer Grunt hij
Doo Doo doo-doo, I love the way you sing and talk to your food as you prepare it too!!! Thanks for your videos and descriptions Emmy! 😍
Beer grunt love the cotton candy Randy profile pic
Doing things like this with your kids is so much fun, and helps build great life skills, even if things don't always turn out perfectly. That's always the important part.
I have a set of these pans from the 50's or 60's. Mine are all metal, even the divider. I've never had any trouble getting it to look very "squared" but I think the trick is to use a really thick cake batter and to make sure that the rings are filled perfectly even. Then, pull the divider out quickly.
Putting the cake layers in the fridge for a while firms them up and makes them less easy to tear when frosting.
I love how emmy just casually talks to the cake
Get an "Easy bake oven" and see what you can make with it. You're delightful, btw. So cheery😀
lukin 71 That would be a fun series!
lukin 71 There is a young chap doing exactly that already on his channel, Timmy Timato!
omgxwtfxily qqqq
Yes! I think that would be fun to watch!
I love this idea!!
I love to hear Emmy speak; she speaks very fluently.
lifeisablessing She speaks with so much intelligence
TongueSlap ikr I love it
Oh hi
Alfred Daniel #attitude
lifeisablessing What do you mean? She was born in America.
hello emmy can you recreate the jollibee peach mango pie? that will be a pretty interesting video! oh btw i just wanna say you are amazing and i LOOOOVE your videos! ♡
Oh, man, those things are so delicious. How great would it be to have a homemade version?! 👅
I've been doing that parchment trick on my cake table ever since I first saw you do it!
👍
I so wanna see your thrift store, you always seem to find such cool stuff!!!
samx36 no kidding! My thrift stores here just have 70s dishes and greasy 90s crock pots.

You’re so close to a million Emmy. Yay I want to congratulate you early I’m so impatient 😂💜🎉 Btw the cake looked so yummy🎂😋
This comments aged WELL. 💪💪
It's much easier to frost frozen cakes, they actually teach that in culinary school.
my nana has one of these! my great grandma gave it to her a long time ago. she doesn’t use it much now but she’s kept it for when she feels like it!.
I should be asleep right now but I'm still going to watch this and then go to sleep 😂
My Monday’s are automatically better after watching your videos, I can’t get enough of them !
Nicole Rosan lol well thanks for the grammar lesson but it was just auto correct. I originally put Mondays but it autocorrects to an apostrophe for some reason
Easer if you cook the two colours separately and use the things as a cookie cutter and rearrange the pieces inverting the Centre of the three rings.
I thought it was a cake cutter at first. But I guess not lol
Me too
dnguyen253 I was expecting it to be bakeable
That's what I did. I have a similar contraption except the divider is made of metal so it was easy to use it as a cookie cutter.
Owen Creed 11:53 she mentioned that method too at the end lol
Emmy!! You should do a “go thrift shopping with me” and take the camera into the store and show us all the great finds you see :)
I used this, but to make a hollow cake with an easy cherry amaretto cream filling. actually came out real nice, but always make sure the cake is put in the fridge and not let out too long.
Such a colorful and amazing cake!
you should try doing this cake but with really strong Kool-Aid. I bet the flavor would really come through with this!
So fun! I love it! Learned some good tips from this too.
I just love the videos where your sons are involved. It will make frosting the cake easier with less crumbs if you have a cup of hot tap water near. After you scrap the spatula, dip it in the hot water, shake excess off and then continue. The warmth helps prevent crumbing into your frosting.
I love your channel so much. You have such a bubbly personality and I admire how open minded you are to trying new things. ❤️
You go girl!!! You've learned So much about cake decorating Emmy - puts icing on cake stand first, *cough 1st christmas cake cough* and everything- I'm so proud of you!!! Great job
Such a colorful, beautiful cake! Great job!
The colors are amazing!!
I have one of these. My grandmother used to have one and I’m oooold. So these have been around a long time. I never have any problem with mine and my kids think it is magic. Please keep doing these gadget videos. They are super entertaining!
Hello!! My grandmother had this thing. LoL...she called it a POS...anyway she learned that if you sprayed the white plastic thing with pam spray that the colors wouldn't mix as bad.
Thank you for the trip down memory lane! !
Love you Emmy! Great video as usual.
Hi Emmy!!! Love your videos. I came across a video online of a pho-rito. Basically a pho burrito! Do you think you can try to make one? Either way I always get excited when you make a new video 😄
I am soo glad I found ur RUclips channel! Can’t believe I’ve been following tastemade just for u for years! And didn’t know!! Binging all ur vids! So soothing! I love watching u try different foods!!
Love you and these videos Emmy! I absolutely adore how much attention you pay to every little.bit of every recipe and how you try so many odd things and are never rude or disgusted by any of them, therefor never hurting anyone.
My grandmother had this cake pan set! We made it (in the standard chocolate/vanilla mixture pictured on the box) for holidays all the time. I was crazy about it as a kid and thought it made the coolest cake ever!!!!
Pro tip: if you stir or whip up the can frosting in your mixer or by hand it makes it easier to spread. Also use just the tip of the off-set spatula and apply slight pressure. Less tearing will occur if you do that. The cake mix was a super moist cake so those are generally harder to frost because it is softer, I usually put mine in the fridge to help it cool one and two it firms up a bit because the fridge will suck out a little of the moisture( this is why you should never ever stick bread in the fridge) which makes it easier to frost. I hope this was helpful.
I remember seeing a picture of this cake and cutting out cardboard strips, measuring and making circles and covering them with foil. Pouring chocolate and vanilla cake batter and trying to perfectly pull the circles I made out of the pans. What a mess! I knew I could figure out how it was done but, what a pain! Cake turned out fine. I wish I had the set. I never made another one. Gatorade cake...?? (Ecccch) Thank you, Emmy for trying all the crazy stuff so we don't have to...BRAVO!!
Yay!! I just got off work and now there's something new to watch while I have my dinner :D
This looked like so fun and I loved the kiddos were your sous chefs. I know they had a blast helping.
Awesome cake!! I find that if I whip the premade frosting with a mixer, it makes it fluffier and so much easier to spread, otherwise it is just too thick. You are a joy to watch, I look forward to your next video! ♡
Thank you for sharing Emmy!
Wow! Emmy, this looks GREAT!
Great video, Emmy! If you want to make a very intensely-flavored cake, you can use the same white cake mix, and stir in little packages of powdered unsweetened Kool-Aid. The flavor is concentrated, because it's designed to be mixed with water, unlike Gatorade which is meant to be consumed as-is. Since your cake mix is already very sweet, the unsweetened powder will just give you some bright colors and strong flavors. I love how you test out these products! If you want to make a checkerboard cake without the bleeding of the colors, just bake the cakes as single colors. Then use circular templates that you can lay on the cake and cut around. After you do that, you can assemble the concentric rings together in the pattern that you would like. You will have to put a little frosting in between those rings to get them to stick. Love your videos! Heather Smith
My mom had one of these when I was growing up and she always made the best birthday cakes with them. It seems novel, but growing up in a home which did not have much processed sugar - birthdays were made extra special because of the sugary treat that these cake molds provided. Great memories!
an easy icing that doesnt tear up your cake is made by adding whipped topping to your canned icing. it also cuts the sweetness
Rosie Okami I warm mine up in the microwave
I have this very set in my cupboard! I believe my mum-in-law received it in 1982 as a wedding gift. I also have her Cuisinart food processor. She never used either if them... the food processor is still going strong, as it spent the first 25 years in its original box. I use it just 3 or 4 times a year, so I imagine it will last virtually forever. I've not used the checkerboard cake kit, per se, but I did rob the pans out of it for a different cake project.
This videos are contagious, they are so relaxing.
Your videos are so fun and informative!
Thanks so much - glad you got something outta watching. 🤓
Hey Emmy.... if you dont mind my input.... in the future.... tap your cake-batter-filled pans on the counter several times before baking to get rid of the bubbles!!! Oh and ... more Emmy Sons Hands too!! lol
barbj672000 that would have messed up the pattern most likely
The old tap-a tap-a
saltyCdog Cue that music.
Emmy, why not use the gadget as a cookie cutter in baked cake?
Not unless she tapped it when the separation mechanism was still in tact, as opposed to take it out first then tapping.
3 AM in the morning, still a pleasure to watch your videos! You make my day so much better! 😍
For that deep down body thirst! :P
I have that exact set! I love it so much!
I didn't even notice the dishwasher lol
Almost 1,000,000 subscribers! All the best for you Emmy
Emmy! Happy new year! So close to 1million! Anything special for that day?
I love your videos and this is another favorite. i know you've done cakes before but when ive used those cake mixes i put the cakes in the fridge to help cracking cause I've noticed those are overly moist so they frost better if they have been in the fridge over night or placed in the freezer for a couple hours. Just a tip to help frosting and cracking and crumbs too.
EMMY !! I actually did this a while back and I didn't use the plastic part I just poured 3 different colors after eachother from the center and it came out perfect looking like yours
This brought happy memories of making koolade cakes with my son using my checker board cake set, just like yours. Choosing the colors and flavors took him ages at the grocery! My lines were never straight, either, but we never cared. 😁
I am so thrilled with the look of this cake. I so want to make something like this for the kids. It's a very kid friendly pan set, it seems.
I love your crazy food :) Thank you Emmy
So close to 1 million subscribers!! Yay Emmy!
That thing is from the 80's. My Grandma had one of those and would make a checkerboard cake once in a while when I was a kid. It was fun!
That is so cool, i like how the kids helped you. Love all the things you do even eating the bugs which i give you credit for:) Congrats almost at a million subs you deserve it:)
Just what I needed to lift my mood. Thank you Emmy, you are a lovely person. Great video as always and greetings from Argentina!
Hello, Argentina! ❤️
Emmy! You are almost at a million! Your videos are always a treat.
Try some Vintage, Antique Mock recipes from either world war
I've got that mock Apple pie recipe torn from a magazine on my fridge because I thought it was weird
Keely Haning I was thinking actual meals. I have an entire mock cookbook
I had an older version of that cake pan when I was a kid in the '70s. It was shiny metal with a metal divider in the middle. I recall making a couple of mostly successful checkerboard cakes before the novelty wore off.
OMG I was so excited when I saw the video pop up! I literally just bought one of these from the thrift store and I was thinking man.....will this work? lol I am happy to see you use it and to see the results:)
I was just looking at doing a plaid cake for my son’s Cub Scout cake auction and this would be such a big help! I wonder if something similar is still on the market... Great video as always!
Annie Gilpin Wilton has one that looks just like this. Found it on German amazon.
Yep, still on Amazon and even ebay.
I've been a subscriber for a looooong time and I I can't believe you're almost at a million!!
This is true art!!
Loved the checkerboard cake!!
looks like a fun cake!
This looks awesome! 🤗
You are so pretty and when you talk or when I listen to your videos or watch your videos I feel so calm. When I watch your videos or have them in the background and I'm really upset or mad just hearing you talk makes me feel more calm and at ease. Even if you aren't trying to comfort me and you weren't here just the sound of your voice sound so calming and gentle I guess and not like you're upset or something or I don't know how to explain it.
I love seeing little hands helping mom in the kitchen
This was great, I will try this some time when I make a cake.
Emmy ur videos always make me happy...thanks fr dat...❤
🤗
Whenever I go to the thrift store I always see tons of vintage shake mixers and shake blenders from the 70s and 80s. If you see one at store near you you should get it and make some freakshakes!
I always wanted to try to make one of these.
Such a fun video!
Emmy Always Makes My Day😊😊😊
Love this !
Yup im gonna have to buy one of those cake rings. I need this in my life
Greetings, my beautiful Emmy. I love you and your videos so much 😊

I love love love your hair Emmy! 💙
Love your hair like this Emmy!!!
Chefs tip: freeze the cake layers before frosting them. Cuts down on cake trying to break off on your spatula! Love your videos!!!
So close to 1 million subs Emmy!
Great video today!
It looks yummy!
You're sooooo close to 1m subscribers! Can't wait :)
That looks yummy as hell!!!
I want some!
Almost at 1mil. Keep up the great work Emmy 😘
That checkered cake liner is pretty cool I might pick one up
I LOVE these kinds of videos where you get like, two videos in one: the gadget test and the recipe test.
Oh my goodness, my late grandmother had this exact pan and seeing it (packaging and all) brought back so many wonderful memories. We made a chocolate/vanilla cake in... oh.. late 90s I think. It turned out beautifully and of course tasted great. Wonderful, thanks!
This made me think of my childhood, my sister and I had birthdays only a few days apart so our mom would let us each pick a cake mix and make a checkerboard cake for us to share. Ours wasn't nearly as colorful as yours. :)
When I make a checkerboard cake, I use jam as the filling between layers. It gets them to stick, and it keeps the layers nice and close. Plus, fewer crumbs!
