  • Growing Hydrangea and expecting lots of flowers? If yes, then do all these simple things NOW.
    The process is really very simple - You would need to prune your Hydrangea plant. But, please be very careful and don't prune your Hydrangea plant without knowing the variety you are growing. The two of the most common Hydrangea varieties are - 1. Smooth Hydrangea 2. Big leaf Hydrangea. We can prune smooth Hydrangea at this time but not Big leaf Hydrangea. Anyway, you don't have to worry anything.
    You would be able to see both varieties in the video. What's the difference? Again, I have shown everything with example and I hope it would help you in identifying the Hydrangea variety you are growing.
    Thank you very much for watching the video n if you have any questions, please let me know 😊

    Good explanation of difference between big leaf and smooth leaf hydrangea and how/when to prune each variety. I accidentally hard pruned my big leaf hydrangea and got no flowers as a result and thought it odd because in another house I owned I hard pruned a mature hydrangea and that produced abundant flower heads. And I couldn't understand why this one I pruned the same way produced none. Just leaves. In disgust at its poor flowering per formance I just neglected it, stopped caring for it. Much to my surprise it produced abundant beautiful reddish unusual coloured blooms. I was over the moon and wondered if it was not one of those plants that does not bloom annually. Now I realise it is a big leaf hydrangea and I had pruned it incorrectly, at the wrong time, like a smooth leaf hydrangea, hence no flowers the previous year. The abundant flower heads are now dying off and I will just snip off the flower heads, not hard pruned it this time. People admire it and I don't want to stop it blooming again next season, very abundantly. Thank you for solving this mystery for me. I now have researched this broad species and found there are also other sorts of hydrangeas, not just these two varieties. And by altering the ph balance or acidity or alkalinity chemistry of the door l, one can get differing shades of pink or blue hydrangeas. Eg tea leaves added to download l will alter its chemistry and produce on colour but other substances might produce a different shade. However, this does not work with all hydrangea varieties. For example some pure white hydrangea varieties will remain white.

    Wonderful video! Thank you for your advice. I’m struggling with one of my hydrangea plants my daughter gave me for Mother’s Day. It is now June 30, 2020 and the flowers seem to be wilting. I’ve checked the soil, I’ve checked the light exposure, and I don’t want to re-plant at this time Because we’re not at the end of the season what is your advice?

    • @GardeningUpbeat
      @GardeningUpbeat  4 года назад +5

      @Tracy Jones. F, Good to know your daughter gave you on Mother's day, that sweet!! Flowers wilting - it's because of lack of water or plant is getting too much direct sunlight. At the blooming time, it's better to provide only morning Sunlight or only filtered sunlight. And, Hydrangea needs lots of water and so please keep the soil consistently moist. Hope that helps and I am sorry for the late reply :-(

      @Judy Sketteno, Please make the holes on the bottom of the pot and this way, water would drain out well. In most cases, one is enough but having more is always better (like 4-6) as this way good aeration maintained and roots get enough Oxygen. I made the mistake of hard pruning my oak leaf Hydrangea a wondered why no blooms, though the plant looked much healthier after pruning it. Hoping for many blooms from it this year as it has sprouted many new heads for blooms. It wasn't a total loss, though, because I got a few more new plants out of the prunings. Hi and thank you. Very good video Please tell me how to figure out what kind of hydrangea my neighbor has. She is 85 years old and asked for my help. Her hydrangea shrub (tree) is about 5 feet tall. In the ground at her front door patio. She just bought the house so she doesn't know what it is. It is a bit neglected but just bloomed a lot (end of summer here). It has a white flower but many of the blooms did not open (hot sun in morning ?). WE have hot summers ---100 degrees--- in California, USA. I water it every day. I think it may be a Annabelle hydrangea or another type. Blooms on new wood ? But I am not sure. What should I do ? I cleaned out all the old leaves at the bottom (clean up) and put new soil on it---acid type. Then I fertilized it with acid loving pellets. May be wrong time to do-- but it looked a bit unhealthy. Any suggestions appreciated (:

      @M H, Glad you liked it and thank you for your words, I appreciate it :-) I am sorry that I didn't inform anything about the alternatives to Mustard cake fertilizer in this video. It's because I am from India and here in my place, Mustard cake fertilizer is quite popular as an powerful organic fertilizer. If I am not wrong, in your place either Fish Emulsion Fertilizer or Blood meal is readily available. So, you can definitely use them instead of Mustard cake fertilizer. Mustard cake fertilizer basically provides Proteins and other Micro-nutrients. Once again, sorry for not including the other alternatives and I have fixed the issue in my new videos. You are most welcome and thank you So much for your support!
      You are lucky that your plants are in ground and usually they need very less care as they manage everything themselves. But still, for better result, we can provide nutrients on regular basis.
      Again, since they are in ground, you can just apply Vermicompost or Homemade compost once in 3-4 months. Simply dig out the surrounding soil in a circle keeping the base of the plant as Center [Plz try to keep minimum 1 foot distance from the base of the plant] Then, add the fertilizers and then cover the area either with fresh soil or same soil.
      Doing this only enough..but if you want to do more, you can apply Potassium Humate from Dec-Jan onwards (once in 30-40 days). Dose would be 2 grams in 1 liter water and then apply the water on soil [1 teaspoon = 5 grams]. You can stop applying this once blooming season is done. Basically it's done to encourage more flowering. I hope that helps..thank you :-)

    I bought mine kept it in my room slightly near a window ... but I had the brilliant idea to take it out! And and when I went to get it it literally looked droopy and wilted!!!! I took it back in the room but the green leaves are sooooo droopy they won’t just fall straight down I cut the heads because they were brown and dried out ! How do I bring my hydrangea back to life!!!!! I was told I over water it but I heard they love water as well and it’s kept in the shade I’m soooo stressed out I can’t believe I killed her 😭😭😭😭 H E L P P L E A S E! The soil is moist and well watered I replanted her and I hope it works!!!! But is there anything I can do ???? Will it bloom this year ?????!!!!

    Right now my plant is growing up vigorously with no buds after the last 2 blooms on Dec (it has flowers when i bought it). And i don't have any idea what to do.

    month...October they are root bound.
    Is it o.k. They are quite old plants. I had reported them 2 yrs ago. Varying size pots 8...10 ".

      @Regina Dsouza, Thank you for your question!! As they bloom in Summer, repotting them in Feb-March would be much better and you would get better result. They would start their dormancy period as Winter is almost near...hope I have answered your question :-)

    I have seen number of videos on RUclips on different flowers but nobody has ever been explained in such a simple & detailed manner. When I was in Shimla, I had two plants of hydrangea but now I have been transferred to Chandigarh. The climate of CHD remains a little bit warmer as compared to Shimla ( maximum 34-38 °©) Can It be grown in Chandigarh? Please reply!!!!!

    Sir, many thanks for the i formative video on hydrangea. I have a big leaf hydrangea bought in October 19 not yet flowered. The leaves have changed the color to yellow with green ribs. What could be the reason and solution. It is getting two hours morning sunlight and daily watering. I stay in Mumbai.Please help.

    • @GardeningUpbeat
      @GardeningUpbeat  4 года назад +1

      @Mani Nair, Thank you So So much for the feedback, appreciate it. Leaves have changed the color to yellow with green ribs - this is the common problem found on Big Leaf Hydrangea and this happens because of Iron deficiency. You would see this symptoms mostly in the winter time and from around August-Sept onwards (that means, when the plant is almost in dormancy period). Anyway, nothing to worry about. If possible, please change the soil and provide rich soil to your plant. It would start growing very soon and you would be able to see the dark green leaves on your plant. Finally one request - I would really appreciate if you don't call me Sir :-) Thank you :-)

      Dear, really have been looking for some useful information on hydrangea care and your channel seems to suit my area of Northern India Amritsar.
      I have many hydrangeas and both of the big quality and the other quality. But I am having great difficulty in taking care of them and getting a beautiful bloom. I'm writing to you in October 2020 and at this moment the leaves in my hydrangea are shedding in fact rotting, stems are getting black and I'm really scared that I may lose many of them. Plz help me ... In detail 🙏🏻
