I love hydrangea, I have come across many blogs related to hydrangea but u gave practical example and explanation for it which is truly helpful. Thank you!
Good explanation of difference between big leaf and smooth leaf hydrangea and how/when to prune each variety. I accidentally hard pruned my big leaf hydrangea and got no flowers as a result and thought it odd because in another house I owned I hard pruned a mature hydrangea and that produced abundant flower heads. And I couldn't understand why this one I pruned the same way produced none. Just leaves. In disgust at its poor flowering per formance I just neglected it, stopped caring for it. Much to my surprise it produced abundant beautiful reddish unusual coloured blooms. I was over the moon and wondered if it was not one of those plants that does not bloom annually. Now I realise it is a big leaf hydrangea and I had pruned it incorrectly, at the wrong time, like a smooth leaf hydrangea, hence no flowers the previous year. The abundant flower heads are now dying off and I will just snip off the flower heads, not hard pruned it this time. People admire it and I don't want to stop it blooming again next season, very abundantly. Thank you for solving this mystery for me. I now have researched this broad species and found there are also other sorts of hydrangeas, not just these two varieties. And by altering the ph balance or acidity or alkalinity chemistry of the door l, one can get differing shades of pink or blue hydrangeas. Eg tea leaves added to download l will alter its chemistry and produce on colour but other substances might produce a different shade. However, this does not work with all hydrangea varieties. For example some pure white hydrangea varieties will remain white.
Wonderful video! Thank you for your advice. I’m struggling with one of my hydrangea plants my daughter gave me for Mother’s Day. It is now June 30, 2020 and the flowers seem to be wilting. I’ve checked the soil, I’ve checked the light exposure, and I don’t want to re-plant at this time Because we’re not at the end of the season what is your advice?
@Tracy Jones. F, Good to know your daughter gave you on Mother's day, that sweet!! Flowers wilting - it's because of lack of water or plant is getting too much direct sunlight. At the blooming time, it's better to provide only morning Sunlight or only filtered sunlight. And, Hydrangea needs lots of water and so please keep the soil consistently moist. Hope that helps and I am sorry for the late reply :-(
Please help I planted Endless summer hydrangea 2 months ago but not flowering right now..I planted in the shady area..I am just wondering if I have to move it in the sunny and part shade..Please help I used Miracle grow booster flower soluble fertilizer..Thank you love your channel by the way..
This was a very interesting presentation. By the look of those blooms and foliage he knows what he's doing, but I was skeptical by the look of that dusty soil. It looked like the watering was very slow to be absorbed. What the heck is mustard cake fertilizer, what is it's composition and where can you get it ?
@M H, Glad you liked it and thank you for your words, I appreciate it :-) I am sorry that I didn't inform anything about the alternatives to Mustard cake fertilizer in this video. It's because I am from India and here in my place, Mustard cake fertilizer is quite popular as an powerful organic fertilizer. If I am not wrong, in your place either Fish Emulsion Fertilizer or Blood meal is readily available. So, you can definitely use them instead of Mustard cake fertilizer. Mustard cake fertilizer basically provides Proteins and other Micro-nutrients. Once again, sorry for not including the other alternatives and I have fixed the issue in my new videos. Thank you for watching and a have a great time ahead :-)
@@GardeningUpbeat Sir, thank you for your very through response. You have such a gracious way about you and it's a pleasure watching your presentations. Also, I enjoy seeing your surroundings. I have subscribed to your channel and I wish you great success.

@moni94587, Most welcome and thank you so much for watching, appreciate it :-) I doubt if you would find mustard cake fertilizer in California :-( But good news is, there are other alternatives and I know those are highly available in California. @Judy Sketteno, Please make the holes on the bottom of the pot and this way, water would drain out well. Hi and thank you. Very good video Please tell me how to figure out what kind of hydrangea my neighbor has. She is 85 years old and asked for my help. Her hydrangea shrub (tree) is about 5 feet tall. In the ground at her front door patio. She just bought the house so she doesn't know what it is. It is a bit neglected but just bloomed a lot (end of summer here). It has a white flower but many of the blooms did not open (hot sun in morning ?). WE have hot summers ---100 degrees--- in California, USA. I water it every day. I think it may be a Annabelle hydrangea or another type. Blooms on new wood ? But I am not sure. What should I do ? I cleaned out all the old leaves at the bottom (clean up) and put new soil on it---acid type. Then I fertilized it with acid loving pellets. May be wrong time to do-- but it looked a bit unhealthy. Any suggestions appreciated (:
You are most welcome and thank you So much for your support! You are lucky that your plants are in ground and usually they need very less care as they manage everything themselves. But still, for better result, we can provide nutrients on regular basis. Again, since they are in ground, you can just apply Vermicompost or Homemade compost once in 3-4 months. Simply dig out the surrounding soil in a circle keeping the base of the plant as Center [Plz try to keep minimum 1 foot distance from the base of the plant] Then, add the fertilizers and then cover the area either with fresh soil or same soil. Doing this only enough..but if you want to do more, you can apply Potassium Humate from Dec-Jan onwards (once in 30-40 days). Dose would be 2 grams in 1 liter water and then apply the water on soil [1 teaspoon = 5 grams]. You can stop applying this once blooming season is done. Basically it's done to encourage more flowering. I hope that helps..thank you :-)

Sir, many thanks for the i formative video on hydrangea. I have a big leaf hydrangea bought in October 19 not yet flowered. The leaves have changed the color to yellow with green ribs. What could be the reason and solution. It is getting two hours morning sunlight and daily watering. I stay in Mumbai. Please help.
@Mani Nair, Thank you So So much for the feedback, appreciate it. Leaves have changed the color to yellow with green ribs - this is the common problem found on Big Leaf Hydrangea and this happens because of Iron deficiency. You would see this symptoms mostly in the winter time and from around August-Sept onwards (that means, when the plant is almost in dormancy period). Anyway, nothing to worry about. If possible, please change the soil and provide rich soil to your plant. It would start growing very soon and you would be able to see the dark green leaves on your plant. Finally one request - I would really appreciate if you don't call me Sir :-) Thank you :-)

@alis shaikh, Thank you very much for the feedback, appreciate it :-) Instead of Bone Meal, you can use Super Phosphate (chemical though). There are other organic alternatives, but bit difficult to collect them as not readily available.
Hi most Hydrangea is cold hardy, from zone 3 - 7 some even zone 9 I live in Illinois, I am in zone 5 with no problem, I grow both gound and containers, the one in container I'll keep in the garage from December thru March, in ground planting I wrapped it up with all mulch to keep them warm, now my Hydrangea is blooming everywhere, the container is packed of flowers, and I been planting Hydrangea for almost 10 years, I love them so much that I collected quite a few through out the year's.

You are using different soil mix when potting it first time and different when repotting is there any reason.i have to pot a plant that I received after a long journey . And have to repot that I have potted some days before but it seems that something went wrong and the plants are dying
Hi, wonferful video. Very informative. Any chance I can speak with you about some questions on growing hydrangeas? Would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.
@Jesmeet Kaur, Sorry for taking bit more time to reply, normally I do in 24 hours or within 48 hours at least. All the fertilizers are available in Amazon and you can use any brand. For Bone meal, I have used Cocogarden Bone Meal powder and it was good...though, it was having rock kind of things inside. If it's not flowering, there could be 3 issues - 1. Not enough sunlight or proper sunlight 2. Lack of fertilizer 3. You got a Big leaf Hydrangea which would bloom in next year (this happens because nursery people doesn't always use old wood while propagating the plants). Thank you :-)
Sir, thank you for your video. I learned something new today from you. The difference in the leaves. I have had close to 100 hydrangea plants and I never knew that! Good tip!
@Grace C, Thank you so so much for your words, appreciate it. 100 Hydrangea plants..WOW, great job :-) I can imagine how it would look when all of them start blooming :-) One request - I would appreciate if you don't call me Sir, thank you :-)
@Marcy Mignone, Mustard cake is the residue left over from commercial mustard oil or meal production. It's very rich in protein and Mustard cake fertilizer is one of the best organic fertilizers. It also provides many micro nutrients to plants. I know that it's not available in all places and you can use Fish Emulsion Fertilizer as a replacement. I hope that helps, thank you :-)
I copied and pasted his answer from below from other person asking the same question as you, Diane. His answer was "@moni94587, Most welcome and thank you so much for watching, appreciate it :-) I doubt if you would find mustard cake fertilizer in California :-( But good news is, there are other alternatives and I know those are highly available in California. @Esther newme, Dappled sunlight is preferred...like under some big tree or so on. However, as my garden is on terrace, that option is not available for me. So, I try to provide 2 hours of direct sunlight (before 12 PM). And yes, they need the soil to be consistently moist, not soggy though...thank you :-)
@TheGreatThinker88, Thank you very much for your feedback, appreciate it! It's (Summer) the right time to grow Hydrangea but temperature in Dehli is quite high. Hydrangea prefer somewhat cooler climate. There are many other Heat Tolerant flowering plants that you can grow. I already have a video about it and if you are interested, you can watch it here - ruclips.net/video/7M11juZaJ_8/видео.html But if you are highly interested in growing Hydrangea, definitely you can give it a try. You would need to protect your plant from too much direct Sunlight. Morning 2-3 hours would be fine. Also, plz mist the plant regularly during extreme hot weather. Good luck :-)
@Anjita Chowdhury, Sure, you can! Actually NPK is all that any plants need..but I have almost stopped using Chemical Fertilizers and so provided Organic solutions that works even better than Chemical. But still, when I am running out of time, I use Chemicals as well as it's easy and quick. Along with the fertilizers, please try to CONTROL the amount of Sunlight your plants are getting as they don't prefer too much direct Sunlight. Good luck!

Finally one request - I would really appreciate if you don't call me Sir :-) Thank you :-)
@@GardeningUpbeat Why do you usually add rocks/pebbles inside your planting pot before pouring in the potting soil? Could you explain. I'd appreciate that.
Dear, really have been looking for some useful information on hydrangea care and your channel seems to suit my area of Northern India Amritsar.

Can you tell me price for hydrangea and location
I bought bigleaf pistachio from a hilly area but i live in a hot climate. I understand that it will take time to adjust to my climate but, any idea why the new leaf buds are turning brown?
For everyone asking about mustard cake fertiliser: it's a high N organic fertiliser. You can perhaps substitute that with blood meal, but a smaller amount because it's much higher N

Fantastic information so far for hydrangea. Besides bone meal which other fertilizer is best for hydrangea
@alis shaikh, Thank you very much for the feedback, appreciate it :-) Instead of Bone Meal, you can use Super Phosphate (chemical though). There are other organic alternatives, but bit difficult to collect them as not readily available.
You should mention weather and which country you are planting?
Can we make mustard cake fertilizer& bonemeal powder?pls teach how to🙏
can hydrangeas survive in pots over winter in Ontario Canada?
Hi most Hydrangea is cold hardy, from zone 3 - 7 some even zone 9 I live in Illinois, I am in zone 5 with no problem, I grow both gound and containers, the one in container I'll keep in the garage from December thru March, in ground planting I wrapped it up with all mulch to keep them warm, now my Hydrangea is blooming everywhere, the container is packed of flowers, and I been planting Hydrangea for almost 10 years, I love them so much that I collected quite a few through out the year's.
@Judilyn Fitz, Thank you very much for replying...appreciate it. Since I don't have much knowledge about the Canada's weather, your reply is going to be perfect for @Krystle Soong :-)It's great to know your plants are blooming well, great job :-) Can understand how much you love Hydrangeas as you have been growing them from last 10 years, cheers!

Thank you.
Sir,I didn't get blooming from hydrengia. 1year old plant.wat I do
Pls reply
My plant is very big and nice soooo many mnt ready no flower..what can i do..where can i get the fetilizer and the bone powder
100 Hydrangea plants..WOW, great job :-) I can imagine how it would look when all of them start blooming :-) One request - I would appreciate if you don't call me Sir, thank you :-)
Thank you very much for all your advice
@D Nimishakavi, Most welcome and thank you very much for watching the video, appreciate it :-)
How to keep safe from heat wave? Its April and the leaves are getting burnt. I kept the plant in shade
Very informative Sir 👍 thanks for the important tips. I have recently bought 3 hydrangea plants n will refer to ur videos for guidance 🙏
I never heard of mustard cake fertilizer. Is there another name maybe?
Can you please reply what is mustard cake fertilizer
@Marcy Mignone, Mustard cake is the residue left over from commercial mustard oil or meal production. It's very rich in protein and Mustard cake fertilizer is one of the best organic fertilizers. It also provides many micro nutrients to plants. I know that it's not available in all places and you can use Fish Emulsion Fertilizer as a replacement. I hope that helps, thank you :-)
Where do we even find all those type of soils anyways?
Great and very helpful video again 👍💓
@Jennifer Anderson, Thank you SOOOOOOOOOOOO much for the feedback, much appreciated :-)
What is master cake fertilizer
I'm in England what is mustard cake fertiliser please.
You can use either Blood Meal or Fish emulsion fertilizer or any other Protein based fertilizer would be best. Mustard cake fertilizer is readily available in my place (India) and it's one of the best and powerful organic fertilizer. Have a great day ahead :-)"
They need shade or sunlight ?and did they need wet mud?
@Esther newme, Dappled sunlight is preferred...like under some big tree or so on. However, as my garden is on terrace, that option is not available for me. So, I try to provide 2 hours of direct sunlight (before 12 PM). And yes, they need the soil to be consistently moist, not soggy though...thank you :-)
Great informative video. Thanks for sharing
@Astro Radha, Glad you liked it :-) Thank you So So much for the feedback, much appreciated :-)
My headrangea leaves turned whitish. What to do please tell
Very informative video.
Can you please advice how to grow hydrangea in Delhi and in which season?
@@GardeningUpbeat Many thanks for your reply.
Can we add npk19:19:19 and vermicompost instead of all this?
@Anjita Chowdhury, Sure, you can! Actually NPK is all that any plants need..but I have almost stopped using Chemical Fertilizers and so provided Organic solutions that works even better than Chemical. But still, when I am running out of time, I use Chemicals as well as it's easy and quick. Along with the fertilizers, please try to CONTROL the amount of Sunlight your plants are getting as they don't prefer too much direct Sunlight. Good luck!
Should we keep it in a shade or full sunlight or semi shade?
In which season we should repot soft HYD plant
Finally i got both the smooth and big leaf hydrangea 😬😬🥰🥰
HURRAY! It's PARTY Time then :-)
Very helpful! Thank you. At last I can easily see the difference between the 2 varieties.
@Vivian Hudacek, Thank you SOOOOOOOOO much for the feedback, appreciate it :-)

Hi. Me again. It just occured to me that in that video you said you were going to reuse the cuttings to grow more hydrangeas. Do you have a video for this? I'd like to do this. I look forward to it.
@Cat Jaouen, Unfortunately, I couldn't do that :-( My daughter kept them under sun while I was recording the video (end part)...ha ha...anyway, I would do that video with other cuttings and would upload soon, thank you :-)
