Wish I had a neighbour like yourself, we would grow as much as possible! I so love gardening but I cannot manage it all by myself, too complicated to explain. Nothing compares like preparing a bed for seeds, seedlings or bulbs and tubers. It is hard work, good planning and preparation but so worth it. Thank you for sharing, I've been growing dahlias for a long time, there is always something new we learn from each other and so many more varieties to choose from, happy gardening would love to see the blooms. I planted dahlias from seed this year and I’m ecstatic because they’re doing so well. I live in zone 5 so I will have to lift them every winter. But I’m so excited because they’re some of my favorite flowers.
That’s awesome! I planted seeds this year too and somehow they turned out pretty great! Got me wondering if all the breeders just say it’s like 1:1000 to get a good flower. 😂
I love the Birdies raised beds. I grew so many greens in the one bed I couldn't believe it! I can't wait to get my Dahlias in the ground now - thank you for sharing your time and info :)
Thank you for this Dahlia vid, Jaques! I planted my 1st Dahlia called Crazy Love in a huge pot with a stake. It's pale pink lined in burgandy. The middle of the flower has hints of yellow and burgandy. It has sprouted!
Jacques is a magical garden hermit he simply connects himself to the mycelium networks in the gardens and they give him nourishment in return for him caring for them it's basic symbiosis 😂
I love Dahlias - my profile pic is from one I grew, in fact. But I had no idea about pinching the top for more flower stems. Cool! In my area, they are annuals - unless we dig up the tubers. And we often do. Great vid - thank you!
I’ve grown dahlias all my gardening life. About forty five years. They are not the easiest flowers to grow. They need the right amount of water . You underwater they dry up you overwater the tubers rot. You have to pinch the plants to get bushier plants. Staking is also needed to keep them from flopping over. They are also susceptible to diseases. One year I had to get rid of all my dahlias, about fifty plants because they all got a fungus. So I had to replace them all. If you live in an area that has cold winters you have to dig them out and store them. If everything goes well you’ll have beautiful dahlias.
Dear Jacques, I wanted to tell you how much i love your channel. Second, I come from Bratislava/Slovakia/Europe. After the WWII a lot of Bulgarian people had come to my town. Thay bought gardens and sell really yummy fruits and vegetables on the markets. So since those time all the "old" people from my town, including me, are buying and calling čubrica, čubrica, it has just stayed in out jargon. And yes! I have one on my balcony. Could you please give us some recepcie with čubrica? That would be awesome. Thank you. Love your channel. XX
I love it! In english the plant is called "summer savory" and growing up one of my favorites uses for dried cubrica was sprinkling it over buttered toast. We like adding it to bean and lentil dishes and generally I add it to savory dishes that you would use thyme or oregano in.
Your garden is so pretty!!! Thanks for sharing about Dahlias, although they are from Mexico, here in Costa Rica we don't have them until last mont, and Im so excited I managed to grab 10 varieties before they sold-out so I cant afford to mess this up! 😂
Excellent video, this is my first year planted dahlia tubers, I planted my tubers out last month here in SW Florida, they are coming up and I am so excited to see the flowers 🌸💮🌼🌼
I have a lilac pink dinner plate size dahlia. It has come up every year for 10 years. After watching your video I think I am going to lift it and condition the soil with some organic fertiliser and maybe split the tubers.
Very cool! I have my BSc in geology where I did research on geologic hazards in Hawaii and a MSc in Geology & Geophysics on continental shelf siliciclastic deposits!
We planted just one city light lavender pink dahlia from a nursery pot in early April in North Carolina. After the 4 blooms died off, the plant grew wider and wider with no new blooms but lots of green leaves. Filling up the spaces in our butterfly garden. Don't know if we should trim back some of the green leaves or wait and see what happens. It is now early summer and temperatures have reached 85-90 degrees on some days. What do you think we should do? We are fearful it might take up too much space. Thanks
Hey Jacques, I’ve been curious about the shoes you’re wearing in this video; I also often see Kevin wearing a similar pair. I’ve been wanting a good garden shoe. Any insight into these that you can share? Haha.
This was a SUPER helpful video! I love dahlias but I've been intimidated to try to grow them because I had no idea how to start and I haven't really grown anything that's a bulb or tuber before. Any suggestions for sourcing dahlias in San Diego? I know Briggs in Vista/San Marcos has some beautiful dahlias (or they did last year).
Usually nurseries have them for some period of time and I wouldn't be surprised if they still had some. Otherwise they usually have mature plants at nurseries that you can replant. Then if you want you can collect tubers when it dies back in the winter or just trim back and let it overwinter. The one I show in the container is one I left there from last year to just sit until it came up again in early spring!
We just moved into a place that has beautiful dahlias blooming. They are really tall, probably at least 4 feet or more, and are starting to fall over. I don't know anything about them but would love to learn. My question is should I stake them or cut them? I have no idea. Thank you!
You can stake them if you want to keep them going! If you cut them now they might still be able to bloom, depending on how warm your area is, but if its soon to get cold they will be unlikely to flower.

Do dwarf dahlias need support, too? I bought some from HD on sale on a whim after seeing the Epic video and learning they like my zone (I previously had only seen them in the pacific nw).
They don't absolutely need it but there is a high chance of some blooms snapping off from the weight. Also some dahlias are much smaller and can be fine without support

Will the dahlia die if you top it when the stem is large enough to be hollow?
I had 1 sprouts on my tuber and it was out of the soil already, someone ate it off. Will the tuber regrow another one? I kept it buried.
