Dahlia Daddies and their Dirty Dahlia Tricks....count me in!
My favorite flowers to grow! I love the big cactus flowered style, the little pompons, and the "black foliage varieties. I like to plant them in bottomless pots, sunk into the ground, which makes it easy to remove them to overwinter in the greenhouse. They will usually overwinter fine in the ground here but it takes them a while to get going in Spring. Keeping them in the warm greenhouse, they are ready to go in Spring.

My great-grandparents ran a dahlia farm in Wisconsin and every year they would have a party where people could pick flowers for free as a way to sell the bulbs. They would take orders and then ship the bulbs for planting the following year. Not sure how much money they made on the whole endeavor as they switched to growing strawberries and other things eventually, but there's a cool article from the local paper about it.

  • @sarahmunoz14

Chaos can be fun! Little worried that you did not look at variable heights of each type in the maze🤔 I hope you don’t get crown gall planting so many imported tubers, but at least they are isolated to one area. It is the worst, yucky plant disease. I’m growing about 25 this year. Almost gave up because they need a lot of H2O and we might have water restrictions this summer in my SoCal area. Hoping for the best with all this extra rain. 🌼

PLEASE be careful when planting Icecream bean trees. I'm in zone b in Florida. I have been trying to grow beans out for years and hand pollination doesn't work. They also regrow readily from roots even if you think you cut them well seriously, beware. It's a huge investment of time that may not work out in the end because you don't have native pollinators😊

I deal with a lot of critters. I just use Neem oil and that seems to work well for me. Some people just spray them off with a powerful hose.
You might need to introduce more predatory insects like ladybugs and Mantids. We don't have many ladybugs out here but there's been a boom of Mantids lately and I'm so happy. I was even considering raising them. I leave the spiders alone too.

Starting dahlia from seed is fun too vs tubers. They bloom 1st year and sometimes you never know what your going to get outside a beautiful flower.
Dahlia daddy Dozie😅 don't forget to build supports now vs later. The sooner the better learned that last year. The dinner plate dahlias need lots support. My dinner plate plants got over 4ft one season. They are difficult to steak up once in bloom.
