My Ranger is flaking paint off like a bad sunburn. (It might be a Ford thing.) I used 220 to sand it down and then 440 to smooth out any sand lines. I masked off the area and taped. then went completely off the rails and did what you said not to do. In my defense, it is a "band aid" until I can afford a decent paint shop.
Tip for everyone out there. Use proper auto paint tape for masking off. Regular Frog Tape sticks a bit too well. 😳

The more you prep the better the paint will look. 1 good paint job will last longer and look better than 5 cheap ones. Take the time to do the prep and you will have a much paint job.

wow, I am impressed by the amount of prep time devoted to this budget paint job. Removing the trim and using a catalysed primer are impressive too. Even if you are doing a "budget" paint job it looks like you are doing a lot of work.

There are no shortcuts to prep that provide decent results. Good prep will make a budget paint job look good. Crappy prep will make even the best paint job look crappy. The results of the paint reflect the results of the prep.

If I've learned anything from you Fred, and that is to prep and clean thoroughly.
I won't use a rattle can to paint, my buddy has a compressor and an old spray gun.
Using an old car tent out on his farm.😬

Sweet!! So you're ok with painting boats 😁, my Crown Vic LX Sport will eventually be in your hands for a re spray, it's factory dark blue pearl, and it's trying to do the typical Ford self removal, paint flaking like you dealt with on this car. Great vid as always, stay awesome!!

Wish y'all did more vids on paint and body. I know your busy, vids take away from your time sensitive jobs. Understandable, hey excellent work. Prep, prep, prep, and prep some more. Pressure washing before tape is so smart. We never did that and struggled with gator constantly. Waiting for the next one dudes.

We are working on it. The LS swapped B2200 should have another video soooon. There is progress on it but slow. Engine bay will be prepped for paint once the LS is fitted & running, we'll pull it back out and paint the bay.

My urethan 2k primer says 320-400 grit. I would of stayed with 120. Woodworker at heart. Never really messed with body work. Now that my wife wrecked my truck I get to. Yeah. I’ve never understood why people sand back the primer.

We'll show it out of the booth after the hood and truck are painted and back on the car. Front and rear glass is out and will be replaced. The rest of the assembly will be completed by the owner (to save him 💰)

Hey man I got the same flaking paint on my truck, my question is did you only sand with 220 grit and nothing else? Or did you start with a more aggressive like 80 grit and then from there finished with 220?

  • @philjohnston9616

If a guy was to burn through the primer when sanding, would you have to touch up those spots before paint or can you get away with it ?
