    Can you please add videos that explain new features in new releases of PBI Report Server? You're doing that for the cloud service, but not Report Server. Thanks. Love your videos.

      Thanks for the feedback! We can try to tackle that. Most of the "new features" have really just been taking on the latest desktop features. We will keep an eye on it though and look to do a video discussing it.

    Hi Adam, our company have SQL Server Enterprise Edition with SA, I was assuming we didnt have to get Pro/Premium licenses to publish and to view if we have this kind of server. Is this true?

    • @GuyInACube

      That was a built in audio file that came with Camtasia Studio 8. I don't know if it is still there with Camtasia Studio 9. I recently stopped using it though.

    can you tell me if it's possible to publish a data model created in Power BI desktop to report server?

    • @GuyInACube
      @GuyInACube  4 года назад

      The dataset/data model is tied to the report when you publish the PBIX to Power BI Report Server. You can't access it the way you can from the Power BI Service though. It is technically there though and needs to be refreshed. Assuming you aren't doing DirectQuery.

    • @GuyInACube

      The only way to embed items from Power BI Report Server, or SQL Server Reporting Services 2016 and later, is to use the following querystring parameter: ?rs:embed=true. You can then use that URL in an . Just note that it will require whatever authentication you have configured on the report server itself.

    One very important question: I see how to find reports you've created and how to change permissions for reports you've created, but not how to share them. Do we just have to copy and paste the URL and send it to the user? Or do they have to navigate from the report server URL down through folders and find the report they want?

      For the SSAS data source yes! This is because it is defined on the SSAS end in the model. And the end users credentials will be passed if you are using windows auth, or hard code the server admin and check the box to impersonate the user. This will use EffectiveUserName.

    We are running Power BI Report Server and find that you can still publish to the report server and/or view reports without a Power BI Pro license. Does that make sense? It doesn't jive with the other voices I'm hearing out there that state that Power BI report developers/publishers (for the on-premises server) still have to be licensed with Power BI Pro. We have SQL Server 2016 EE + SA, so I don't know if that makes the difference, say per licensing a Power BI report server using Power BI Premium. Can you shed some light on this confusing licensing for Power BI report server publishing? Perhaps this a licensing "honor system" instituted by Microsoft as there seems to be no licensing requirement to publish to our Power BI Report Server that was deployed under our SQL Server EE + SA arrangement. All we have to do to ensure a user can publish to the assigned folder/space in Power BI (on-premises) Report Server is that they have the required permissions to the target folder they are publishing to on the report server itself.

    Hi Adam,If I am not mistaken, you need a special Desktop edition to publish to Server.There are many old visuals there, for instance: Matrix and Table that do not allow drill-down, you cannot change column headers, etc.When are the updates to the visuals (that are happenning all the time in the regular Destop) suppose to be updated to the Server edition?And another question: is there a possibility to use custom visuals on-prem Server?Thank you.Michael

    • @GuyInACube
      @GuyInACube  7 лет назад +1

      Yes there are different desktop versions. the Power BI Desktop that is optimized for Power BI Report Server is only updated as often as the server is updated which is every 3-4 months.
      Custom visuals are supported with the GA version of Power BI Report Server (June 2017)

    Is RLS the same in Power BI Reporting Services as in the main service?

    • @GuyInACube
      @GuyInACube  6 лет назад

      With regards to Power BI Reports, you can still create roles within Power BI Desktop for imported models. So, that part is the same. For live connections and DirectQuery, the Windows token can be passed to the data source within PBIRS, so that will allow native support for RLS in that data source. Note, that Kerberos is required to be configured for that to work. For Analysis Services, you can configure the data source within PBIRS to use EffectiveUserName to bypass the kerberos configuration.

    Is your PowerBI server on the same server as the Analysis server? If not, that could the he Kerberos error. SSRS does the same thing because you need impersonation to use them on different servers which Kerberos gives you.

    • @GuyInACube
      @GuyInACube  7 лет назад

      You can save a PBIX file to a SharePoint library, but it is just treated as a file store at that point. To open and interact with it, you would have to launch Power BI Desktop locally. To get the full integrated experience, PBIX files have to reside within Power BI Report Server or within the Power BI cloud service.

      Your mileage may vary. No guarantee. If it was created with a version of Power BI Desktop before the released version of Power BI Report Server, it should work. The problem will be if you create a report with a version of Power BI Desktop released after the release of Power BI Report Server. There may be updates within Power BI Desktop that Power BI Report Server doesn't understand and could result in errors.

      There are still ways to deliver PBI content on-premise without RS like embedded content - especially with the introduction of Premium. This seems like a step backwards for the road map. I guess there are still plenty not willing to move to a cloud approach.

      There are some organizations that cannot use the cloud service. Thinking of banks, some government organizations and medical. Or there may be a company that doesn't trust the cloud. This provides an option to avoid having anything in the cloud. This is about options for the customer. If they want to publish in the Power BI cloud service, then they have that option. If they just want to use this in an on-premises approach, that is available too.
      A lot of folks have been asking for this capability.

    Hi!
    Can I use Power BI Report Server only, without Premium licence? And how much is this?
    Regards

      To get a product key for Power BI Report Server , you have two options.
      1. Purchase Power BI Premium
      2. Have a SQL Server Enterprise Edition Software Assurance agreement.

    Hello guys, actually python scripts are available in PBI desktop for PBI server, I can retrieve data from a python data source, publish the report to a report server and it works well, but the documentation says that python scripts are not supported, what does it exactly mean? because the report I built works well so I'm confused :s

    Hi Adam,
    How can we embed Power BI reports to the .net application which are published on Power Builder Report Server?
    Awaiting for your response.

      The only way to embed Power BI reports hosted within Power BI Report Server is to use the query string parameter ?rs:embed=true. powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/reportserver-quickstart-embed/

    Why is it that you hardly post anything on Power BI report Server.
    I want to see how you do email subscription in RS
    Report Refresh in report server with Import mode
    How to connect to Oracle Database. Resolving the error while trying to connect. Step by step on how it is done.

      I'm not exactly sure what you are trying to do. You are importing Excel data into a Power BI Report. You are then publishing it to Power BI Report Server or the Power BI Service?

      No Sir,
      I am importing excel data into Power BI Desktop Version.
      Then after I want to create and export a report on multiple pages (one raw - one page) But I don't know how to do this type of report in Power BI Desktop.
      Suppose 500 rows in excel data, So the report creates in 500 pages in a single pdf file.
      Now you know what I want.

    Hi Adam, Great video - thanks for that. 1 question though...
    If you have installed the Power BI Report Server as a different instance than the default, what path should be used when publishing the Power BI file to the server?
    In my case the report server instance name is PBIRS. So the url for my home page looks like this:
    edgarsb/PBIRS/browse/
    I tried different options, like:
    edgarsb/reportserver$PBIRS/reports
    edgarsb/reportserver/reports$PBIRS
    but that did not work.
    Thanks for your help.

    • @GuyInACube
      @GuyInACube  7 лет назад

      The instance name will always be PBIRS :) You can't change that.
      It will always be based on what you named your virtual directories within the Report Server Configuration Manager. The defaults are reports for the web portal and reportserver for the Web services/Report Server.
      It looks like you changed the web portal virtual directory to be PBIRS. so it would be server/pbirs to get to the web portal. What did you do for the other virtual directory? is it still reportserver? if it is, then just do edgarsb/reportserver. Just use whatever it shows within the configuration manager.

    Thanks for all these great updates! So useful - I'm assuming you can use imported mode from any source still? Just wanted to mention slightly off topic - not sure if you derived the data but hermaphrodite is an offensive word - the correct term is intersex. www.isna.org/node/16

    • @GuyInACube
      @GuyInACube  7 лет назад

      Thanks for calling that out Vanessa! I will be more careful about that. I actually got the data from a third party.
      Imported data is not currently supported for Power BI reports within Power BI Report Server. It is coming soon though. Stay tuned to the Power BI blog as well as this channel for when it is available.

      I am just busy testing the report server, and see that the only connection i can currently use is SSAS in direct query, is that correct? So i can't pull data from a SQL Server db either? Its just literally SSAS and thats it?
