This has been a major pain point for me in Powerbi! My solution was to create a crosswalk of shortened/abbreviated category names to get the whole value to fit in a barchart, but I like this solution much better. Its very clean and easier to maintain (ie, in my solution I'd have to watch for new categories appearing to create a new abbreviation). Thank you for your videos, you always have such creative workarounds to the limitations in PBI.
Excellent presentation. Very clear and easy to understand and follow. My challenge is how can you make the labels dynamic. For example if there was more than 1 field in the bar chart and you used the drill down filter how could you get the the labels to also change.

thanks for watching! :) i think with dax it is all about knowing some key principles. There are however some patterns that come back a lot. I would create your own little library of code snippets that you can adjust to your own reports.

I was trying it but this doesn't seem to work for me. I'm clueless. When I'm putting the label placeholder= 0 in my bar chart, nothing changes except the colour of bars. The width of bars remains the same and the bars don't show the value "0" above them. I don't know what to do now ☹️

What I have in mind is defining a measure which first check the data and then define the selectedvalue() to be displayed on top to the bar. Something like: If data(1) then selectedvaue(x) else if data(2) then selectedvalue(y) etc. Do you have a way forward. Thanks a lot

Hello, love your contents so much as it is really helping me !, in this video though I noticed you have more control over the formatting the bars which I don't have in my power BI desktop even though it is the latest version of Power BI, for instance I also need to play around with the "Inner padding" option under Bars under "Spacing" in the formatting menu but I don't have that one I have just the ability to change the spacing between the bars , do you may be know what might be the reason for that ?
Have they removed the option for conditional formatting on data labels? For some reason on an old visual I have the fx button but when recreating for a new visual it is gone.

thank you!!! i believe the option to conditionally format disappears when you have 2 or more measures. So as a work around you could use the error bars. The min and max you can set with measures so you could conditionally show the error bar.

However on this one when I create the measure called labels placeholder and add it to the X axis, it will show in the legend but I do not see the "0" showing below the bar. I don't seem to have that option for my bar chart, I'm on the December version. Under Value decimal places, where you shorts vid shows the add custom label, I have Show blank as . Perhaps that replaced the custom label? I'd love to have this feature working!

When I add the dummy measure it does not show the value 0. Also when I don't have custom label but I have a field section under my values, and when I add the measure I created it still does not show

My bar chart is showing only top 5 categories using numeric parameter, I can shown any number of top categories. When I put 0 in a measure and add that to bar chart , it give all of categories, instead of 5. is there any way to manage that?
If you dont need drillthrough or custom tooltips, the horizontal barchart custom visual is easier for this approach. You can switch from hammer head, lollipop, line... But nice content, very usefull :)
I think you could make that work as well :) .. instead of setting the dummy to 0, you take the value of the series you apply the labels to (here sales) .. then under formatting set the labels to inside base, no fill, no border, label overflow on, .. thats it :)
What do you mean by "drill-through" in label? The user can click on the bar right below the label and drill-through from there, which brings the filter (if enabled) on that label to the drill-through pqge.
@@dutch-man I meant that in the above video it's for one level of label to quote category wise sales What if I want to drill down to subcategory sales(as I wanted to show client both category and subcategory wise yearly monthly and weekly sales) As in y axis we can concatenate the labels which doesn't make sense all the time if there are many subcategories with larger names Hope you understand what I'm trying to get

He's using a clustered bar chart. If you use a stacked barchart it will put the dummy measure in front (or behind) the actual data bar.

Try switching the visual to line chart, apply the custom label then switch back to bar chart

hm, you probably could do it by adding error bars .. set the position equal to the column value .. change the marker to circle and increase the size

sounds like you missed a step. Under label formatting options make sure you have the correct series selected and then add custom labels.

What do you mean by "drill-through" in label? The user can click on the bar right below the label and drill-through from there, which brings the filter (if enabled) on that label to the drill-through pqge.

I meant that in the above video it's for one level of label to quote category wise sales
What if I want to drill down to subcategory sales(as I wanted to show client both category and subcategory wise yearly monthly and weekly sales)
As in y axis we can concatenate the labels which doesn't make sense all the time if there are many subcategories with larger names
