Most of the roads were prepped with brine solution, as is done in other places, but the nature of TX ice storms makes that process less effective than anyone can imagine. Salt, plows and other typical snow removal equipment is also mostly ineffective in ice - and very costly to having sitting around unused for 50 weeks out of the year.
The situation begs the question, were the trucks not equipped with chains? They are required in many other states for slick, snowy roads. Yes, they are a pain to put on, heavy and a little pricey. But a little preparation goes a long way - on both sides of the road.
I worked nights, delivering newspapers in every kind of weather, 365 days a year for 30 years - in TX. Always had a set of chains in the trunk, for whatever vehicle I was in.

Yes its recommended during winter storms like carrying snacks and water in case you're stranded. Not sure why ppl don't invest in chain. My husband says because it's a hassle and he is a very safe driver he knows his tricks to , trucker for 18yrs but in times like these it will help out tons.

Ice storms are the worst. Granted, ice coatings can make things look pretty, especially when the sun comes out, but they are very dangerous.
Many years ago I was coming home on a public bus in a snow storm. The bus made numerous attempts to get up a long steep hill. At one point we made it partway up and then the bus slid backwards down the hill and at a bit of an angle, so we ended up in the oncoming lane. Scary! Once we got to the top of the ridge it took a while to cross the road there, as cross traffic was reluctant to let traffic from our road through. Then it took hours--yes, hours to cross the top of the ridge to the next cross street. That is a busier cross street, so none of the cross traffic was letting people from our street through. That was pretty scary because that's where the ridge dropped down again, in another long steep hill. Both of those cross street intersections had traffic lights, but nobody was paying attention to them. We finally did make it across and down. When I got off the bus downtown in my town I had to hike home through several inches of snow in my sneakers and got home after 7pm. Earlier that day, when I caught an outbound bus at about 1:30pm there wasn't any snow on the ground, and only a little light snow in the forecast. It started snowing a little right around when the bus came. It started getting bad after we passed through a big nearby town. Some of the other passengers started getting off to catch busses going the other way. I finally did the same thing, and if I had waited any longer I wouldn't have made it home that night.
In early 2005 the northeast bad a series of snow and sleet storms. The weight of the snow and ice on the trees caused trees and branches to break by the millions. That caused regional power outages. Where we were living the past wer was out for 5 & ½ days. We lost a few trees, and a giant tree limb, weighed down by the super thick ice, was in danger of breaking my bedroom window and becoming my roommate.
Ice and snow look pretty, but they are very dangerous. If you can, stay home when the weather is really bad. Right now it's very cold outside, which is also dangerous. Either bundle up if you must go out, or better still, stay home.🌬️🌨️☃️

As someone who is from Texas and has moved to the Midwest, I can confidently say that Texas is NOT well prepared for conditions like these. The Midwest doesn’t play around when it snows. Texas needs to up their game and get better resources for situations like this to keep everyone safe.

Good to see them out there helping out. But as a truck driver it sickens me to see soo many "truck drivers" allowing themselves to be stuck in a situation like this. Poor planning and lack of action. No real truck driver would be sitting there helpless like that.
