There is no need for salt trucks when it doesn't even get this cold every year. Last year it was hot around this time. We usually get 100 plus degree weather every summer so for us being in single digit weather is very rare. My family usually has cases of water and jugs of water saved incase of an emergency as we flood easily with rainy season and hurricane season and always have canned food in our pantry. Not everyone is so lucky to have water and food saved as us.

We've had the same problems way down here in Laredo!! In fact I finally got my water back just a couple of hours ago. My back yard was like a swimming pool after one of the pipes burst last night spewing God knows how much water!! However, we had a much worse storm back in 1989 when a massive Arctic blast sent temperatures *down here* into the single digits with wind chill factors into below zero temperatures! That one was much worse than this one! So I wouldn't exactly call this one a "once in a lifetime" event. In fact, I remember the same thing happening when I was in highschool several times and school was cancelled each time. But then winters became much less brutal for almost 30 years. It actually snowed down here on Christmas Eve 2005 and again just three years ago. So, I think that the brutal cold winters may be making a comeback!! Be prepared next winter and every winter after that!!

People in Texas should have those of us who deal with this kind of weather for months during winter give them advice on how to prepare for this. When a deep freeze is predicted during a major winter storm all exposed pipes need to be insulated to prevent frozen and busted pipes.

We went through the exact same thing in February 10 years ago in El Paso, TX. It flooded the whole house. We fixed it and sold it. Hubby lost his job and we were tired of the heat in the summer, outages every year, high property tax and the corruption of the city council. Love where we live now.

I live in Texas and knew about this a week beforehand. Guess what, I winterized my plumbing and refilled my portable propane tanks five days before it reached us. I always have an indoor safe heater and It stayed a very nice 68° with no power and had no pipes burst in single digit temps. Take responsibility for yourself and your family and don't rely on the government to help you. I went fishing and had a great time because I didn't rely on the government to hold my hand.
