The editing does make it look worse that it was, but also. It isn't completely untrue that Kaiba and Yugi both took actions that violated rules and board state. Double duels didn't have official rules at the time (and may still not I am not sure,) so it can be hard to say what might work and what might not. But, they both definitely took actions that violated the rules as the show explains them.

So many bs plays but these are the real ones that actually happened that I had to point out...

I see people talk about broken anime cards and I'm surprised Mask of Restrict doesn't get brought up. The anime version doesn't apply to the controller like the real life version does.
There were plenty of by-the rules games, and several games that we didn't see all of. Really, apart from Yugi and Kaiba (and I guess Weevel and Espa Roba) there wasn't too much cheating. (Assuming you don't count the other crimes performed to set up some of the duels as "cheating.")

Curse of the Masked Beast Spell card requires sacrifices of the same level monsters. Kaiba even regular summoned/changed his monster's battle position during his opponents Battle Phase. Somehow 3000 Attack points is suddenly enough to destroy a monster that has 3200 Attack, and absolutely no explanation was given...
