None of the clips I search for on RUclips have my favorite Bowie quote of the entire show. In the All This and Gargantua 2 episode when Dr. Mrs. the Monarch asks Bowie after he starts 'burning down the house' and killing all the members of the council who he REALLY is he turns and simply says, "Just some bloke who wanted to be anybody but himself." To me that one line added a lot to his character, almost making him a character you can sympathize with at the very end.
The writers were paraphrasing something that Bowie actually said about his younger self.
David Bowie was a giant among men. He shall forever be missed, and forever be remembered.

It's really not crazy at all. It's called capturing the imagination. Falstaff, The Little Tramp, Willy Wonka, aforementioned Spock, Sherlock Holmes, Ziggy all fall in that category. And as far as I know Bowie 'retired' Ziggy, he didn't even 'kill' him onstage.
