Milwaukee is the city I moved too in 2017 from overseas. I can’t stress the segregation enough. It is everywhere. I used the bus for 2 years until I could afford having a car and I saw all the city has to offer and found myself going through all the neighborhoods on the west and north side of the river. Something I too found similar is the amount of intellect that is actually there amongst the youth. I have had the most insightful conversations at bus stops with some of the less fortunate. All they want is a fair chance and opportunity to get better. The mental health issues run deep in this city which causes a lot of the homelessness. The 414 will always have a special place in my heart. It gave me so much as an “outsider” and I always look for opportunities now to give back to this area.

I've been in a really difficult situation too in the past and I think that a big factor it that people in such predicaments also do not want to impose themselves on others, partly because the thought of being turned down is one additional thing that they don't want to confront at that moment. When you're tired and hungry and your mind is troubled, the surety of having that abandoned building, that bush or that park is a million times more appealing than having to face the high likelihood that a friend or family member would turn you away. It's so much easier to just lay your back on the first safe place you can find and fantasize that maybe, just maybe, there might be people out there who would have helped you out, if you asked. Maybe next time...
