I am totally floored. After watching this young mans audition I was left feeling that he had all the cards stacked against him. I felt for him with the struggle he had not knowing and over-compensating facial expression. I feel bad for him because I was in chorus in school and church. It is way easier with the right teachings of the songs get you to where you can harmonize enough. He overcompensated with everything. His band leaders did him no good by not trying to work with him as a sole singer. He made it through before but in a chorus. Someone from the show should have addressed it. But Where would the ratings be without the worst audition EVER ! He is 27 , but seems like a high school kid to me. He had the mentality to try and go all the ranges he could in what time given. They set this guy up so they could make fun of him....He even states that he was mislead more to try it solo. I applaud him !!! CLAP CLAP CLAP !! GOOD FOR YOU stepping out of your comfort zone. Nick, you keep hanging in there with your music and your band... Take this and learn from it. I am sure you are a great chorus singer. If you have a good director you should let him know that you want total truth and is he/she's door open for you if you feel a note or something could be throwing you off. Remember, without mediocre there would be no chorus or karaoke. Practice alone as well. Record yourself and make it just for yourself and when you listen to it, be truthful with your self. God bless you Nick !! Get involved with a good chorus and enjoy yourself. With some guidance you can go far, just with chorus though. I like the point you made about the chorus director saying it's the worst for someone watching you to look at you motionless. The problem is that you think that just because you've had extensive training, you're automatically a great singer. It's not a countdown where each year you train you're automatically a better singer. Some people never take lessons and they are extremely talented naturally, and unfortunately some people train their whole lives and never improve. I'm sure you can name a dozen people who have been in the music industry for YEARS that you personally think are terrible.
I don't doubt that you could have plenty of instrumental skills, however your voice was simply off tune. Your vibrato was both inconsistent and off key. I also don't doubt that the anxiety had a huge effect on that. The audition mishaps aside, thanks for the 'truth behind American Idol' bit. I'd heard things about Idol but it's always nice to hear the complete truth behind the bullshit from someone who was there.

As a musical Autistic person myself (not saying you're Autistic that's none of my business but just saying) but I just wanted to say listening to your material outside of you being nervous on the competition/your audition/the program, no you're not the worst vocalist, in fact your singing voice isn't necessarily bad at all, (you have nice timing/tone/tempo with your vocals) but you do not have a pop/commercial voice, and maybe that's not your style, you're not into gospel belting/runs/registers etc. and that's okay, and to me you're more of an alternative/art/experimental vocalist, and you can still produce entertaining music in that genre.
though not agree with the politics sometimes I'm glad that sjw and inclusivity are more prevalent now because meanness and making fun of other people's weaknesses were so normalized back then

Nick I have watched performers my whole life and they have certain qualities. The audience is instantly comfortable with their confidence and body language. The tension of the tougest audiance brings them to life and it gives them energy to exceed their own expectations. They are spontainious and can adjust to changes and and unexpected situations quickly and smoothly to make it a part of their performance. With a swing in their step they are charismatic. Do you feel you have these qualities?

You must have been scared/nervousness out of your mind during that audition because your eyes actually looked like they were bulging out of their sockets dude. Your whole demeanor was strange, the way you spoke, etc. In this video you seem normal. That said though, knowing about music and being a good singer are two totally separate things. You may know something about music but you are not a good singer by a long shot. I am not dissing you, it's just reality. You can't go in with a horrible voice and expect them to hand you a recording contract. I don't care much for Simon Cowell, but he is right about one thing, you have to ask yourself, "Would people buy my music?" You really have to evaluate that and be honest about it. All that said though, I have no doubt they set certain people up for failure to add drama to the show. They did it to Zoe Alexander too. Of course this was what like 10+ years ago now. LOL.

To be completly honest, your audition wasnt the greatest, but it wasnt terrible as I regularly hear worse, my sister loves to sing, and this isnt a sibling rivalry thing, she is actually tone deaf. A word of advice, dont sing like your in a choir when you are singing solo, find what pitch you feel you sound best at and practice singing sngs that go at that pitch, then you will do perfect
