Motown did not want to produce this album. But Marvin was a huge artist and finally got his way. This was probably one of the first concept albums ever made. The whole album is amazing.

Some studio heads under Barry Gordy actually released the single without him knowing after he said that he didn’t want it produced. When it became an overnight success, he changed his tune and they released the entire album and it even gave Barry the wherewithal to let other artists in the label take creative control.

It's my all-time favourite. The message in this album stands the test of time. Everything that Marvin sang about in 1971 holds truth in 2024. God bless the Prince of Soul!

In my opinion, it's one of those very few timeless albums. The rhythms and patterns that appear through the album create such an amazing atmosphere.

Soul music (as they once called black music) was always created and produced to fuel the human soul. Spiritual entertainment, designed to keep you informed and motivated. Touch the inner wires of the mind and body.

I loved your reaction. I could tell you really felt the song. That’s the power of Marvin Gaye. This song sounds as fresh as the first time I heard it as an 8 yr old in 1971. The lyrics are still relevant to our current state of affairs.

Back in 1971, they did play this on the radio. It reached #1 in the Billboard R&B Singles chart and #9 in the Billboard Pop Singles chart. That is huge. Nothing that comes out today can even come close to what was produced in the 60's and 70's. No autotune, REAL instruments, real musicians, real voices, real talent. This song is still relevant today - a lot of what he says in the lyrics is going on today. It is so sad that we lost Marvin so young and so tragically.

Marvin was the most soulful singer I ever heard. He was way ahead of his time. His composition “What’s Goin’ On” was a social anthem for ills that continue to plague us today. He went against Berry Gordy who didn’t want him to record it. Thankfully, Marvin won out. He was a musical genius and he sang about things that people didn’t want to talk about. Please do a reaction to What’s Goin On. That was a song that changed lives. R.I.P. Marvin. 💔💔

I'm 75, an old Vietnam vet. I bought this album in 1971 when I got back to the states and I couldn't stop listening to it. I grew up in a suburb of Detroit and listened to almost exclusively Motown. Album " What's Going On " brought me to tears while listening to it the first time as it still does to this day. I loved your reaction to it. Marvin Felt the injustice deeply. One of my top 3 albums of all time.

Marvin was pure genius. I'm 72 this year, I bought this album when it first came out, and I still have it and listen to it regularly. Marvin had an enormous social conscience, what a pity more world leaders don't follow in his footsteps. the irony of it all is he was shot and killed by his own farther who didn't agree with his lifestyle. (he was a preacher) enough said.

Thanks for this ! Marvin Gaye is a favourite of mine from when he was singing with Tammy Terrell back in the 60’s!
This music was so popular & Marvin insisted that the album be recorded 🥰 Have listened to this so many times & it still gives the message that was relevant in 1970 right to the present. Marvin gave the world something very special & important … Who are they to judge us is so true.
I still am heartbroken 💔 & remember the day I heard Marvin had been killed by his father, still shed tears to this day ☮️

This is a social protest song, and probably the best one if it’s time. The late 60’s and early 70’s were full of these songs on AM radio. This video was added decades after this song came out. We listened to this song and saw the images in our minds. It’s always amazed me how this song had such deep lyrics to such a funky beat.

I have also watched your Tracy Chapman reaction. I listened to her when I was 19 years old, so it was around 1989. Have seen her once live in those days. I listened to her Album a lot. While I was watching this reaction of Marvin , another amazing singer came to my mind. Have you ever heard of Sixto Rodriguez? He is amazing , with a great message and a really but also strange story. There is a great documentary about him , which also won an oscar. I am pretty sure that you will love it.

Distraction is right. Marvin Gaye had to threaten Motown to let him do "his own" music. He was a big enough star to do it, otherwise this would've been disappeared.
This whole album, "What's Going On" is worth listening to from start to finish. That's how it was meant to be heard.
Marvin Gaye was shot by his father, they never got along, during an argument.
