And the Bowie episode is still on here on top of that. I thought that was going to disappear after a week. That's good, that's very very very good.
Wow! That was so wonderful and emotional at the same time. Seeing the interviews with his parents brought me to tears, knowing how he died. No wonder he sang about love so much and was anti-violence. He was a great soul singer, one of the best! I surely miss him. Thanks so much for this incredible treat, The Midnight Special. 😊😎✌️💜
Motown music is so good, and Marvin Gaye was part of that. I am a fan of his music. May he rest in peace. Cheers! ✌️
That is the sparkliest Canadian Tuxedo I ever saw, though I did have a studded Levi jacket in 1975. This is the first episode I've seen with a focus on a single performer. After Tammi Terrell died, he became very introspective, with a harder sound. I bet that girls still has that cup. Burt had a sweet jacket, Steph is right, seeing Marin and his parents, their pride in him, their hopes for him, and knowing his end, it's heartbreaking. But this wonderful performance, the showmanship, the lust for life, I can't help but to be happy. This is a wonderful episode, thank you Burt, perks like this make being a member worth it. Goodbye and God Bless you Marvin.
I'm a big fan of Marvin Gaye. He made great music, and he is greatly missed. Cheers! ✌️
NICE!!!
Yes !
My first record (yes record) was at 8 years old, and it was "Let's Get It On".
Thank you daddy for buying me that record.
RIP the both you .
He is still my favorite singer at 61 years young!
Beautiful episode. It's unfortunate that was tragically taken from us 10 years later. It's been 40 years, and it's a great loss felt. RIP Mr. Marvin Gaye.
Marvin Gaye at the peak of his “Let’s Get it On” success. Marvin unfortunately was fighting a cold this night and still sounded better than people in full voice. Thanks for posting the complete show of this beautiful human being that left us way too soon.
I've saw Marvin live about a year after Sexual Healing was released and he sounded great. Honestly, I'd have been mad as hell if Marvin sounded anywhere near as terrible as he sounds in this concert footage. Marvin deserves better than someone overlooking how bad Marvin sounded...which, I think he knew from the first note he sang. Also, the music arrangements on "Trouble Man" and "Get To This" were horrendous🤔
@ I hate to say it but first time i watched this on a rerun on VH1, I was VERY disappointed in how he sounded from the opening of “Trouble Man”. I knew something wasn’t right. Then i read bout how Marvin was fighting a cold by the time they taped it. U can hear the difference in his voice from the “Marvin Gaye Live!” LP from the same year of this concert. He sounded great. However, had this taping been postponed, we probably wouldn’t have an episode of Marvin Gaye on the Midnight Special. As for me, i rather Marvin in bad voice than any new artist today in their prime.
I'll never forget when he checked out, our band played Sexual healing at least 5 times. 😎👍💯✌️
@ “checked out”? Geez. What u think of the “Marvin Gaye Live!” LP?
@@kenoglesby5840 Tell the truth. Did they prepare for this concert? Who was the sound engineer? I attend a similar concert where he wore the same clothes in Houston in 1974 and I don't recall it being this bad. Your assesment is on point. Drugs and alcohol don't play.
@13:48 You have to know Marvin's story to understand his off the cuff comment about "going back to the mountains" . One of the happiest periods of Marvin's life was when he met Janis and recorded the Let's Get It On Album. He bought a place up in Topanga Canyon mountains where he wanted to escape the world below and just be with there with Janis. He "ONLY" came down from his mountain because he was running low on money and touring was the only way he could make a lot of it, quickly. Plus he had the new album out and Motown pressured him to capitalize on the buzz. Eventually he would retun to mountains with Janis but would soon leave it permanently after someone mysteriously slit the throats of his two Guard dogs up there. That marked the end his mountain days! True story.
Hard to believe he got a Grammy for "Sexual Healing".... but NOTHING for anything on the "What's Going On album" !!!!! Lou Rawls won that year.
Marvin's backup group did a great job!❤
WOW the cinematography is clear. This is a classic. Marvin’s style in the rhinestone denim shirt and jeans is on point. One of my favorite images of him is in this outfit so FLY.
“Marvin
He was a friend of mine
And he could sing his song
His heart in every line
Marvin
Sang of the joy and pain
He opened up our mind
And I still can hear him say
"Oh, talk to me
So you can see what's goin' on"
Say you will sing your songs
For evermore, evermore
Gonna be some sweet sounds
Coming down on the nightshift
I bet you're singing proud
Oh, I bet you'll pull a crowd
Gonna be a long night
It's gonna be all right
On the nightshift
You found another home
I know you're not alone
On the nightshift, oh
You found another home
I know you're not alone
On the nightshift”
~ Commodores 1985 “Nightshift” song comes to mind … what a voice he had! 🎉💗
…I just heard this song on the adult standards station in my area. It’s a wonderful and fitting tribute to an absolute legendary figure!
The father/son conversation was interesting. Ten years later it would take a tragic turn.
Haunting to watch
So so sad
A lifetime of resentment, tension and grievances between these two men would not only shatter that family completely but result in a tragic and horrific act that could never be taken back or forgiven........

Thanks for sharing the program ❤
As a HUUUUGE Marvin Gaye fan this is one of those things I've heard about but never seen. Thank you so much for this.
the genius that changed the sound of soul!
Concert is amazing. Seeing him with his parents was eerie, considering what happened.
Thank you so much for another great episode!! He looks great here!! Do you have next week’s episode already picked?? If not, could you please consider posting episode 53 here next week?? If not, that’s okay. 😁
I LIVED for Friday nights when I was a teen because Midnight Special and Don Kirshner's Rock concert came on back to back! And Saturday afternoons were Soul Train and American Bandstand!
LOL
Same here!
Love me some Marvin Gaye
I had privilege of meeting
him in 1963 on the Motown
Revue 💕❤️💕❤️💕💕❤️💕❤️💕❤️💕❤️💕❤️💕
Never forgot the great Marvin Gaye. RIP 🙏
This is the most sensuous concert I've watched. Can l hear it for Marvin Gaye. Truly amazing.
Marvin Gaye…a tortured genius who rarely made TV appearances or did interviews. A quiet master of rhythm and blues who generated sex and seduction without getting graphic. He is missed!
Massive Respect due to Mr Marvin Gaye.
The Prince of Soul, musical genius and savant. His socially conscious music of that time is sadly still relevant today. When will we as humans get out of our teenage years??
I had forgotten about this episode. This is Marvin at the peak of his powers. His voice wasn't 100 percent but still a great episode
Marvin Gaye at his best. Awesome music
He’s not at his best though. He has a cold
Midnight Special was everything at one point in time...i miss those days as a kid trying so hard to stay up until Midnight..😊❤
Wow! Marvin Gaye, one of my favorites!❤
Grew up in Barnesville Georgia. Spent a lot of time in Atlanta. Attended Braves games. Remember when they recorded this concert. Wish I could say I was there. Big talk around that time.
I RECALL WATCHING THIS WHEN IT ORIGINALLY AIRED WITH MY MOTHER. I HAD JUST STARTED MY 6TH GRADE YEAR IN GRAMMAR SCHOOL. MY MOTHER WAS SUCH A FAN OF THIS MAN SO SHE WAS EXCITED TO SEE THE LIVE CONCERT ON MIDNIGHT SPECIAL. WE WERE TOLD AT THE TIME HE WASN’T WITH COLD BUT HAD THE FLU. THE SHOES OR BOOTS ARE A MUST TO WATCH IN THE CONCERT. THE BIG SILVER SPARKLING HIGH HEELED PLATFORM SHOES ARE CRAZY LOOKING. THE BAND IS KICKING MAD BOOTY ON THIS CONCERT.
THAT WAS JANIS IN THE SHOT WITH MARVIN WHEN HE WAS TALKING ABOUT THE MIDNIGHT SPECIAL JACKET AND SHE WAS PREGNANT WITH HIS FIRST CHILD.
NOW this show that night was something special .
Qué emocionante poder ver esto, hoy 15 de Noviembre. Marvin Gaye brillará siempre🙏Qué voz, qué swing. Él lo tenía todo!!✨️💯✨️💕✨️
💜💜💜💜💜
"Let's get it on" My future wife and I were dancing to it at the Saturn Club in Bossier City, La. Halfway through the song the club manager came up to us, handed us a $20 bill and told us to head to the hourly motel next door and do that, 🤓! The song is just that hot 🔥!
That's awesome right there man
Wonderful concert, historic timepiece. Atlanta's Fulton County Stadium, where only five months earlier Hank Aaron hit his historic 715th home run.
So great to see Marvin. What a talent. That man oozed soul. Thanks for posting this episode!
And it never occurred to ANYONE on the Midnight Special staff or Marvin’s staff to GIVE HIM A CUP OF WATER OR HOT TEA??!! Damn y’all!
That’s a damn GOOD question!! I NEVER EVER thought of that. You’re right! Geez.
💎💎💎💎💎
God blessed him inside and out!!! He is beautiful. . .voice of silk.
A real treasure.
My favorite singer of all time, my idol.
Great concert and watching him talk with his father it seemed like they had a good relationship... 10 years later it went left and we all know what happened. That's very tragic what ended up happening 😔
Marvin had charisma, charming , soul , auwsome range , rip bro u will b remembered ❤❤
Can't wait for The Midnight Special concert special. It's a great treat.
I know I already commented but this is my review of the show: Simply put, this is the 2nd greatest concert performance I've ever heard from Marvin and it really gives his Kennedy Center performance a HUGE run for its money. This performance also deviates from Marvin's usual concerts as he performs "Keep Getting it On" which was never really a big staple of his shows and his faux strip tease occurred during "What's Going On" when it's usually done during "Let's Get It On". Musically it REALLY deviates from Marvin's usual live style in that this feels like southern soul filtered through Marvin. Marvin usually favored heavy percussion through bongo drums and the use of brass instruments. (mainly the sax) Here though, it's mainly bass guitar heavy and again, has a flavor that feels more Stax/Volt than Motown which got Marvin really shouting it out at times which was not his usual M.O.
The performance is also a true indicator of what Marvin always said, his performances fed off of the crowd. If the crowd wasn't feeling it then Marvin couldn't give it his best shot. Here, Marvin is in great voice and is just in a GROOVE! Usually there'd be a song where he really stumbles or he might not be feeling confident and have to slow things down and get his bearings. That was not the case here as he was just rockin' from beginning to end. I also noticed that he gave his "fossil medley" some real bite to it. Marvin was always ambivalent about his '60s material and it would show but here he gave it his all and you could tell he was enjoying himself.
Last but not least, I loved the conversation portions. There's a whole helluva lot of irony and sadness seeing Marvin talking with his parents. When he was talking to his mother he got visibly uncomfortable when she spoke of his father and the segment with his father is so melancholy in hindsight. You could tell they did love each other but so much crap from their past built up and got worse over time. Marvin truly did love his dad and he never felt the love he craved from him.
Thanks again for uploading this!
Not sure how you are able to misremember this, but this setlist from Atlanta is the exact same show from 1974's _Marvin Gaye Live!_ album, recorded January 4, 1974 in Oakland, and performed about two dozen times across the USA during his year-long tour.
As for his voice, it was rough, with little falsetto and no real ability to carry a melody, each song line being shouted instead. He even apologizes for this at 48:07!
@CoCotheTurtle the setlist is the same but the arrangement and style seems different to me.
I'm also aware of his voice as he had a cold and you're right, it's more shouty than normal which gives it a more gutbucket southern soul flavor to it.
@@SPTO That is the perfect way to describe it!
A Live video of INNER CITY BLUES...YES!!!!!
Is fantastic. I never seen this before. Thank you for the upload. We missed that silky soul singer, Mr. Marvin Gaye
Timeless!!!!!!!
My king live forever
I was at that concert celebrating my birthday. It was exciting. I am 74 and still remember how much fun we had back then 😊. It was good to see MARVIN back in the USA after he left for a while. ❤
Such a iconic singer I grew up with Marvin since the 70s and bought all his LPS. It's too bad he had to die so young by his father. I got a bunch of Marvin Gaye songs on my phone that I listen to with my headphones everywhere I go. Specialty because the radio CD in my car does not work as well😅 so I wear my Bluetooth headphones. What's really weird is and ironic is when the song plays through my headphones called if I should die tonight, that is a beautiful song but sad as well. God bless you Marvin and I know you are in a better place with your father.
GOD BLESS THIS UPLOAD!!!
good to see this one back❤
Yes! I love it! 💟

OMG, thanks for posting this.. I remember my Buddies and I staying up to watch this. Now if we can see the one with David Bowie.
YaYThis is an amazing episode
0:17 Starting off by getting the crowd to misspell “Marvin” was quite the thing to witness.
Haha, I thought I’d misheard that 😂
@@pifflepockleI loved how that dude was on stage at the end looking embarrassed as hell.
He should’ve lost his gig that nite! 🙄
I’m trying to think positive. It had to be a bad video edit. 😂😂
I'm watching. THE GOAT, THE PRINCE MARVELOUS MARVIN GAYE. THERE' WILL NEVER ,NEVER EVER ONE TO MATCH THIS MAN , MYSIC OR HIS LEGACY. MISS YOU DEARLY RIP MY BELOVED BROTHER 😢❤❤
His father was beyond WEIRD!!
the best episode ever. marvin sr sounded like a smart man in 1974 maybe he & marvin jr had inner demons.
Love Love me some Marvin Gaye my mother introduce me to him as a child What's Going On album ❤❤
Saw this episode on the member's page 9 months ago. Can't wait to see it as a premier.
Thanks for this classic upload. Who's ever responsible?I was eleven in 1974, and I would always get sleepy about 10:30/ 11:00 PM. i think it came on at eleven, where I lived in the midwest
BLACK SOUL ALL OVER THE PLACE WHEN I SAY COOL I OVERLY MEANT IT
This concert is incredible ......and the interview with marvins Mother is so very touching.
And the part with his Father also....It shows the real love they had for each other. WOW!
I have this on DVD.
Yes Classic Concert
The background dancers was killing it I wonder what was the name of the group was they signed with Marvin? Or Marvin got with them
Can't wait, The Midnight Special!
Hi Laurie. I know you're busy with your sister.
My two questions were, how is your sister (I hope improving) and have you gotten around to listening to any other tracks on that Grand Wazoo album.
I know you probably have zero time for yourself, so I hope I'm not intruding.
I do wish your sister and you the best.
See you in the chat tonight. ❤
I’m here in 2024❤️❤️❤️❤️
Merci !!

The Man The Myth The Legion! Tall Tan and Talented.
Wow!
He was hoarse that night!
Insane bass player!
I just don’t have words. ❤
Not what I was expecting. in the best way😮
❤❤❤❤❤
As Marvin Gaye was fighting a really bad cold, he sounded petty good to me despite hitting those flat notes.
Burt's only other cameo apart from the season 2 opener with Jim Croce, I think?
You're too young to remember Carol Wayne on Johnny Carson.
She married Burt Sugarman, and I hear she appeared on MS a few times.
I'm looking forward to seeing that.
If you haven't heard of her, look her up.
@Royalle_with_Cheese I have seen her on it a couple of times during the "Rock Rap" portion. She drowned in 1985.
@@gregoryduncan3067
Yeah. Her drowning was kinda suspicious too. She was a cutie. Played the dumb blond but I expect she was very bright.
I’m old enough to remember this show. He was severely hoarse that night
Hard to believe it's been 40 years since he passed unexpectingly.
Great concert I enjoy it to all of you naysayers who never tap into your talent
Marvin was very nervous interviewing with his "GAY" Father. You can see it in his body language. Marvin LOVED both his parents, but he had concerns about his Father being Homosexual, I would too, if my Father was a Homosexual. Just like Marvin loved his Father, I would still love my Father if he were Homosexual, but I would not support my Father's chosen lifestyle. Just like people have a right to CHOOSE a lifestyle, I also have a right NOT to support that lifestyle. 🙏 RIP Brother Marvin.
Good observation. I think had Mr. Gay been allowed to be who he truly was, many of the things that happened in the home, wouldn’t have occurred. NO straight husband puts on his wife’s nightgowns and stuff. Marvin Gaye was embarrassed by his behavior. Marvin sr to me never truly knew how to love his son. The TV clip of them was very staged, and very awkward. I never watch that part. I focus on the musical performance and the interview with his mom.
The concert took place at Atlanta's Fulton County Stadium.
Waz Waitin 4 Thiz 1 :)) - $â©️..
Weird to hear them talking about how much his father cared for him and tried so hard to keep Marvin out of trouble. Sad.
Please guys! For members only: the amazing October 10, 1975 episode, with Hellen Reddy and The Bee Gees!
One L is sufficient thank you.
While I love me some Gaye, I prefer the regular MIdnight Special concerts that feature several performers.
This was the first to be dedicated to just one act. Three Dog Night would soon follow suit, albeit with a cameo from Leo Sayer (if memory serves.)
Motown's engineers should have been fired for poorly recording Marvin's live album from the Oakland concert. With that being said, Marvin was at the height of his powers that night.
If this video represents the chaotic/shambolic nature of the 1974 tour, it's pretty amazing they were able to get what they got!
That Oakland concert is a lost treasure for sure
What his mother said about his father - really, really, are you kidding me!!!!!
@48:50 - Those Background singers remind me the singer from the movie "Lialeh ". The song "All Pink on The Inside".
JAY LENO NEEDS THAT OUTFIT!!!
Jay Leno was inspired by that outfit. 😂
He looks just like his mother. It was hard listening her talk about his father knowing what happened.
