This was back in the days when standard tuning was a little less standard. So many of these bluesmen played the guitar in whatever way they taught themselves, and if you picked up their guitar, there was no guarantee that you could even play it. For example, Albert King played with the strings backwards and in an open tuning. Wonderful authenticity, pure soul.
I wish this kind of music would come back. I'm glad someone preserved this video! If you have more like this in your collection please by all means upload em to your channel.
Interesting that Gatemouth Brown is playing a Rickenbacker. In 1966 it was more associated with the jangle rock like The Beatles and The Byrds, not so much the blues.
@@dirtylemon3379 I think Toots played another model, but when Lennon went to the music store they only had a 325 Mapleglo with the Accent or Kaufmann vibrato so he took that one. Later he had it painted black and had a Bigsby installed.
I think its a 50s model with 3 toaster-top pickups. It's hard to see but it looks like the pickguard may not the split level type, nor is there a 5th knob to blend the neck and middle pickups. The tailpiece is not the big R nor does it look like a trapeze. I think it is set up for the Accent vibrato, that's the tailpiece--but i dont see the arm! He has the guutar cord wrapped around it, though. So it might be one of the "tulip" designs or an early 345? 3 denotes 300 series, 4 denotes three pickups, 5 denotes factory installed vibrato. 345. Or-- it might be a 50s Capri model. Rics are not usually a blues or RnB guitar but the pickups have a lot of clarity with both sparkle and warmth, depending on settings. Plus the design is unrivaled for cool space age looks! Maybe he just dug the style!
Imagine if they had shows like this now. I feel like people are getting tired of the sterile digital pop and want something real, i mean everyone is going through something now.
Terrific. Local TV is always looking for content. Capitalizing on artists that were more or less local, this one was stunning. Note about Gatemouth playing a Rick-I was fortunate enough to see him several times and he always made whatever he was playing sound good. I saw him bring a Fender baritone, followed by a Guild, then an SG. 3 songs in a row. What a musician.
The so called elite super stars today could never do this, Michael Jackson could Whitney could but the rappers and the J Zs and Beyonce and...... No way with out special effects
There is killer footage of rappers, Biggie Smalls for example, rapping on street corners with no mike, no effects no amplification, no stage...Just human beatbox accompaniment..Of course there is plenty of trash music out there, but I don't think you listen to enough rap to know goods from bad....At the time this was recorded, there were plenty of people putting this music down as being too simplistic compared to the Jazz era.
The host "Hoss" had sn interesting backstory that would have been worth knowing more about. He was "White" and essentially adopted by a Black family in the Jim Crow South.
When and where did this show run? I know 1966, but was it network/national, regional, southern, east coast, west, etc.? (Edit: Sorry- I just looked at the description… Thanks for posting this!)
For all the people posting live music videos recorded on their cell phones this was recorded in 1966 and it sounds way better than your 2024 cell phone video. Better video resolution on your cell phone but that's about it.
This was a great series, just about the only place to see/hear artists like this on TV/video. I'm happy that this channel has a small collection of them, because due to the name it's very difficult to search for, here or anywhere. I believe the entire series is or was available on DVD. If that's true I hope someone takes the time to put them up, ideally all in one place. Side note: I was a blues guitar player in the 80's and saw Gatemouth Brown live several times. Got to chat with him a few times. What a great, underappreciated musician, with a fantastic band every time. I even sold the man weed once! At the time I was unaware of his involvement in this show...
No, not related. Freddie was from Texas, and yes amazing. He is probably the single biggest influence on the white blues rock scene before Hendrix appeared. In England in the mid sixties it seemed like every blues guitarist had a Freddie king instrumental in their set
Wow, i am so glad that this show was preserved
Freddie King.... from Gilmer, Texas
R. I. P.
FREDDIE 🎸🇨🇱 KING
GATEMOUTH🎸 BROWN
I’m in awe. Saw all the Kings live. Albert was the most fun

Such unbelievably good stuff on this programme.
Give the backing band and the dancer some well deserved love! Amazing.

I learnt how to play guitar by watching people perform on TV. Glad I did not try that with Albert King !
Soulful feel !!! All natural abilities !!!
Wow!

This is great! I've never heard of this show!
First time I've heard of this. Boss Allen is super cool. Great MC. And what a great band!
Gatemouth was an incredible innovator. Saw him live in Houston. Just an absolute musical savant. Danced with his wife. Only while man in the bar
Asked him to play Cockroach Blues. Of course he did. Awesome
loved this show when I was in high school. Friday night Chanel 11 in St Louis. I think it was out of Memphis.
Recorded at WFAA in Dallas
Yowza! Frank Howard and the Commanders! Thanks for uploading this.
Youve gotta lotta good stuff on this channel! Def subscribed
I wish this kind of music would come back. I'm glad someone preserved this video! If you have more like this in your collection please by all means upload em to your channel.
What a great show
Freddie was always my favorite King. Saw Gatemouth in Albany, OR, not too long before he died. Amazing to the end.
Look at his fingers move. Awesome
awesome And BaddAss.................
Just one step beyond greatness. Fanfuckintasic
Talk about a high speed "Summertime"
Gatemouth arranged that one, obviously.
Interesting that Gatemouth Brown is playing a Rickenbacker. In 1966 it was more associated with the jangle rock like The Beatles and The Byrds, not so much the blues.
I think those guys would play like whatever they got their hands on
Jazz Guitarist/Harmonica Player Toots Thielemans played a Rickenbacker for a time also.
@ That’s right. Supposedly John Lennon saw a picture of Toots with his Rickenbacker 325 and he liked the look so he bought one. It then became iconic.

A great show all around, but what a fantastic performance by Freddy King. This was real music television.
初めて見たけどスゲー番組だな、いやフレディ・キングはともかくゲイトマウス・ブラウンがバックでギター弾いてるとは思わなかったわ。ゴイスー!!

Nope, it's the absolute truth. Rap is mostly talentless garbage.

Fascinating
I saw a Steve Martin movie like that, didn't think it was a documentary!
❤
Released the Day before I was born.
Good stuff.
若い頃のFreddy Kingの演奏を初めて観ました。映像も綺麗で凄い!感動です。
Great!
So great, thank you for that..
BLACK MUSIC NEVER FAILS TO SATISFY... GENRE TO GENRE ERA TO ERA DECADE TO DECADE
Never found rap to be 'satisfying'. That's where it stopped for me..
This white boy says amen to that.
Thank God I grew up round Detroit listening to CKLW and Motown Music, today I'm in a small band at 65 playing a lot of this music$$$$$
@@pualdupvandoff8199 well you on your own it's GLOBAL

So is Taylor Swift, and McDonalds. There's no accounting for some people's tastes..
Freddie King fingerpicking his a** off, no plectrum. Now I'm inspired to try out that technique.
💃 💃
best electric guitar player with hendrix
Billy Cox from The Band of Gypsys on Bass
Tight, tight, tight! Showband tight! Great memories!
Freddy reminds me of
Otis Rush very similar styles
Bill "Hoss" Allen.
What an accent, it says he's a D.J. out off Tennessee, but he sounds like he's from straight from the Delta.
Is that or is that not Billy Cox on bass?!!!
Sure looks like him
Yes, definitely Billy. He was house bass player for TV shows "Night Train" and "The!!!! Beat"
I do believe it is.
JaneR
Met him at a Hendrix Experience show, in Tulsa, a few yrs ago.
Super cool!!!!!
The Beat!!!! Does Go On!!!!
What a fantastic show! Thank you for sharing the video with us.

Real MUSIC... No special effects NEEDED ‼️RAW TALENT 100% ‼️
DAMN!!!
Why don't we have go go girls these days?
These young girls don't know nothing but twerking. It'd be too obscene
We have OnlyFans tattooed sluts.
I believe Freddie was the better of the 3 Kings.
Theyre all great, but Freddie had high energy in his playing..
Freddy King, was he related to B.B King?, He was amazing!
No, not related. Freddie was from Texas, and yes amazing. He is probably the single biggest influence on the white blues rock scene before Hendrix appeared.

Maaaan, Freddy was a BEAST!
Wow, what a great show and from Memphis Tenn. Was this Staxx Records or were they in Nashville? I'm slipping.
Dallas Texas
What a classic. Where was this show produced? A local show ?

I remember seeing this episode back in the day. Damn! What a memory!!!
I wanna add this: This TV show reminds of how old I am (75).
Thank God the Beatles came along when they did. They moved pop music past the dirty lyrics, the sweating and the screaming. ha ha ha
