this is a great series of videos. covering the gang culture that has had a deep influence in modern rap. its important to know how deep these ties can run if you want to understand the eternal-struggle that has defined rap as a genre. most casual rap fans like myself listen to gang affiliated rappers a lot of the time and forget the depth & seriousness of the issues these people live/lived in. Videos like these further my appreciation in the art & history of rap & black culture in america.
Buddy This isnt hip hop culture. This is a niche: Chicago gang culture which, yes is directly related to chicago drill music. however drill music isnt all or even most of hiphop. It only existed within the mainstream around 2012 maybe slightly earlier.
I'm from Chicago. Left the city in 2005 when I dropped out of college and enlisted in the Army. After I retired from the Army people ask if I was moving back to Chicago. I always respond " I survived two warzones, Iraq and Afghanistan why would I retire to a warzone?". Heaven help my hometown.
Crazy Chicago is so bad it's compared to war zone Iraq. Chiraq they call it. It's also crazy Chicago is so beautiful but yet so dangerous at the same time. But Chicago will always be my favorite city in the world.

Chief Keef told Durk to get lost after Durk asked for some bail money so Durk sent Bosstop to snatch Chief Keefs chain right off his neck in his own home while Lil Reese and Fredo were there sitting on couch watching it happen. Durk is the official G in all this. Keef cant even go to chicago anymore ever bc its “on-site” clappin if he does...
Glad you made this Ross. People dont realize how easy it is to fall into the gang life when its all you know and just how poorly our government treated us and how that led to where alot of minorities are today.
Larry Hoover created GD gang they need to let him free so he can recreate modern GDs into positive things... Gangs to self productive than self destructive.
This shouldn't even be a issue. It's called Black Gangsta Disciple Nation. We all in the same family. When I lived in the Chi I called it for the GDs and my best friend BD Ed called it for the BDs. We both honored King David and King Larry. We attended the same services, made money together, and fought together. If you had s problem with the BDs you had a problem with the GDs,and vice versa.
That’s what I remember growing up, you would see “BGDN” tagged all over the Southeast side of Chicago. And what’s so tripped out, back in the early 1980’s, that area between 63 rd &King Dr. and 63rd & Cottage Grove use to be BGD’s going to war against Vice Lords….
Hey Ross, love your videos. A cool idea for this series would be to look at gang culture in Toronto, particularly Driftwood and Regent Park. There have been many promising up and coming rappers from these areas and also a lot of bloodshed such as the killings of Houdini and Smoke Dawg. Although it doesnt seem like it, there are a lot of similarities between Toronto and Chicago's gang rivalries and also music industries.
Ross i've been a fan of yours for so long. lit whenever it comes to anything rap related i lit wait for u to report on it and i cry when u have no new vids. i've lit watched on ur vids cause theyre so good. ur hard work will pay off i promise !!
It's got a very different vibe than a lot of music you'd associate with 2010s Chicago, but Open Mike Eagle, who grew up in the Robert Taylor Homes, made an album about the neighborhood and the decision to demolish the buildings called Brick Body Kids Still Daydream that I highly recommend.
Very well done, like the one on Tookaville/O-Block. Could you do one on Folks versus People in Chicago that touches recent history. Can you also do one on the Chicago-to-Detroit drug pipeline?
I appreciate that you treat these people with the respect an anthropologist or historian would. There is no difference between gang culture and the warring tribes of every nation throughout all of human history. It’s human nature amplified and it needs to be treated as such.
This makes me sad to see how we've fallen off since bodygaurding for MLK and protecting our community and running programs to warring sets... Also dude has a lot of history in here.

this is a great series of videos. covering the gang culture that has had a deep influence in modern rap. its important to know how deep these ties can run if you want to understand the eternal-struggle that has defined rap as a genre. most casual rap fans like myself listen to gang affiliated rappers a lot of the time and forget the depth & seriousness of the issues these people live/lived in.
Videos like these further my appreciation in the art & history of rap & black culture in america.
Man I’m addicted to these videos . One of the only channels that goes in depth and gives facts instead of cap !
This channel is by far the best at obtaining, explaining and breaking down hip-hop culture!
Whaaaaaaat lmmfao 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Gang culture. Hip hop culture came in the 1970' to end gang fighting.
Nah you should of said chicago is like a battlefield don't move here

Crazy part is 20-25 years ago here in Georgia, we had GD's but dudes was basically "BGD." I rarely heard anyone say "GD" they would just say they "FOLK" and show love to David and Hoover. And that was like "1997" when I was in middle school. I don't know how it got down here but my side of town (Eastside) in Macon, Georgia was the FOLK Nation part of town that's all I saw at school and in the neighborhoods.

The great history of my city...shameful, but great. @TrapLoreRoss you did a great job presenting the early history of Chicago street gang culture.
I remember listening to crazy story 3 and being amazed at how von was at storytelling and reminded me of 90s storytelling and it's a shame how a lot of young rappers never reach their full potential and are taken early in their careers
All of this is public knowledge. Good on ya Ross for putting visuals and a pretty dope script to this knowledge. It gave it order.
You missed the part where Larry Hoover and King David merged to form Larry David in what was known around Chicago as the "Curb Your Gang War"

Von was given the nickname Grandson from an old head he was cellmates with in jail. He would push him around in his wheelchair and remind him to take out his dentures before going to sleep, basically looking out for the guy.

So glad you covered this. Please do deep dive on 64th vs 63rd beef in chiraq or Durk vs Chief Keef beef and include the Migos vs Chicago in that.
The Government was the culprit regarding the gang structure in Chicago. Now there's no structure.
Huge fan of both Duck and Von. Both of them was mad talanted and took care of their people frfr 💯 May they rest in peace 🙏
Glad you made this Ross. People dont realize how easy it is to fall into the gang life when its all you know and just how poorly our government treated us and how that led to where alot of minorities are today.

Fun fact: The BDs and GDs have the same opps, such as the Vice Lords, Mickey Cobras, 4 Corner Hustlers and Black P Stones.
These videos are so good, Ross is really putting in work
This shouldn't even be a issue.
White boys always in the business they not part of
Yo “calling” don’t really mean nothing. Young heads gone do what they do, they don’t bow down to leaders
Bro you took that shit way back 🤣🤣🤣 I’m from CHicago and just learned some stuff
I agree. Theres a big gang war going on now. Lost over 8 rappers in a year and bit
