  • Beth & Mr Shaibel || Emotions (The Queen's Gambit)
    ***
This video is about Beth & Mr Shaibel. Their relationship was one of the highlights of The Queen's Gambit. Beth was orphan and lives in Methuen home for children. Where she meets Mr Shaibel, who works as a janitor. He was like a father figure for her and he taught her how to play chess. He soon realizes Beth's talent. A few years later, Beth is adopted by Alma Wheatley and her husband. Beth enrolls herself in chess tournaments and wins many games and tournaments. Later Jolene visits her home and tell her that Mr Shaibel has died. They both go to Methuen to attend his funeral. After that she visits Methuen's basement where he taught her chess, where she finds her articles and Mr Shaibel and her photo. She broke down in tears and Jolene comforts her. After that event she finds a new motive and that point become turning point for her life.
I got emotional while making this video. It was an emotional ride. Well thanks for showing your love on my channel and watch this video and let me know what you think in comment section. I hope you will like it. Thanks for coming by.

What a lot of people missed is when Mr. Shaibel sent the $5, he did not include even a one sentence note. He is just that type of man, he shows his love in actions, not words.. And when Beth found out she meant the world to him, it was too late.

Me too when she saw the montage.
I like how the principal told her to be in chapel and she just said yes ma'am because she knew that woman had dementia/ didn't know what she was saying. It takes a lot of empathy on her part.

I think this was the catalyst that got Beth clean and focused. The tears being that moment she realized how selfish she had been, ignoring the only person who believed in her from the start. Not to mention discovering how proud he was of her. It was the final thing he taught Beth.

Makes sense, especially since the music played during this scene is called the ‘turning point’. This was the beginning of the moment for Beth’s recovery and eventual triumph over Borgov and her addictions. Great series!

It seems to me that Beth breaking down isn't so much the usual sadness that someone has died; it was tears of regret knowing she never properly thanked him or got to say goodbye. This is a powerful scene.

Beth leaving the orphanage in the car was one of the few times TV ever made me cry. Mr. Shibel was a fantastic man, and his love for Beth was show through actions, not words. My grandfather was the same. Definitely hit close to home on this one

I think in the final scene, Beth’s walk in the park takes her back to her chess beginnings when she meets all the Mr. scheibels’ of Russia as her way of honouring him as her initial chess mentor.

She didnt have a father but Mr Shaibel was there when she made her first steps.
When she asked for the entry fee for the tournament the solitary janitor knew her potential and loved her so much he gave her the 5 bucks without a single note inside the envelope.
He was witnessing her entire career and growth from the shadows and im 100% sure he was so proud of her.
When she was at the brink of ruin even when he was dead he saved her.He was like a friendly reminder to Beth. The moment she went down there at the basement she grasped the good old memories and she realized what chess is to her.
I understand they didnt reunite because she was drawn to all the chaos in her own life and he was a solitary cold man.But it seems he was cold only from the outside. When she got adopted you can see Shaibel looking at her from outside the car.
He cared,He loved her,he was there all the way until the day he died.If thats not a father figure then i dont know what is.
Such a good job from Netflix with this one,i am honestly shocked with how all of this touched my soul.
Modern Chess Openings is definetely on my to read list now.

The scene where young Beth hesitantly asks Mr. Schaibel if she's good enough really got to me. She really had no idea how talented she was and the harsh life at the orphanage literally left her starving for approval. And the hesitant placement of her hand on his shoulder when the picture was taken - she was trying to reach out to the only father figure she knew. Such a contrast to the Beth we see later, not just confident but arrogant.

I see Mr. Shaible as the kind of man with such a simple and uneventful existence, that knowing he was THE ONE who taught chess to that one genius was probably the highlight of his life. I don't think he expected to be loved nor do I think he would have known how to respond if she had ever shown him how much he meant to her.
Perhaps, he would have enjoyed to have been given some recognition for having been his teacher and mentor. But I don't believe he died expecting it. He was able to imagine a different life through her journey and her accomplishments, and that was probably enough for a man like him.

Watching this again after having read the book, I think Beth and Mr Shaibel both had regret for their actions (or lack there of) towards one another. Beth, of course, for not visiting/writing or paying him back and Mr Shaibel for not finding a way to ensure she could keep playing chess while still at the orphanage, perhaps also for not reaching out to her beyond sending her the $5.

The only time I cried in a Netflix TV series…
The first time I saw the scene where Beth goes back to the school basement to remember Mr. Shaibel (scene which, in my opinion, was played flawlessly), I had to stop watching anytime soon… Because I spent the next 30 minutes curling up in my bed crying for Mr. Shaibel.
Mr. Shaibel. was so underrated in the movie!…
The only disappointment I had with the series was the underutilization of Mr. Shaibel. And as for the story, I think this Mr. Shaibel didn't give a damn about his $10 bill. What he wanted was to encourage Beth to make his dream come true, like a father would. Mr. Shaibel was a rather introverted person, but it didn't leave him indifferent to see Beth go… The expression on his face left no doubt about it!
