  • How To Clean A Stainless Steel Sink
    We get a lot of questions from people who are confused about how to clean a stainless steel kitchen sink or other stainless steel sink and what products to use to clean it. It can seem confusing and daunting, but is really pretty simple. Join us for this easy step by step demonstration of several methods you can use, including a natural, non-chemical method.
    Here is the outline of things we discuss in this garage sale video:
    Introduction to stainless steel and why I prefer stainless steel sinks.
    1:03 I’m going to give you 2 methods - 1) Comet cleanser and 2) baking soda and vinegar. You can also use a great product called Bar Keeper’s Friend, but I don’t demonstrate it in this video.
    1:08 Comet cleanser - I use just regular Comet. It doesn’t scratch your sink if you make a paste with water. I like it because it has a little bit of bleach in it and disinfects well.
    1:20 The other method is baking soda and vinegar. It’s a good alternative if you don’t want to use Comet.
    1:31 The only thing I don’t like about it is that the vinegar does not disinfect as well as bleach, despite all the rumors going around the Internet. Read about using vinegar or bleach to disinfect here:
    www.livingonadi...
    2:07 I use the washrag I had already been using to clean dishes to clean my sink because I’m getting ready to toss it in the laundry.
    2:26 I start by cleaning the soap off the outside of my soap bottle. This also helps me use the soap on the rag to start cleaning.
    2:50 First, I wipe down the sink to get it wet.
    3:54 Cleaning with Comet (If you use products with bleach, rinse immediately because bleach can pit your sink if let it sit.) Bar Keeper’s Friend is another good cleanser, which does not contain bleach, so it will not harm the stainless steel.
    4:50 Rinse
    5:25 After you’re done cleaning the sink, wipe down the counters.
    5:33 Then, after you’re done cleaning, dry the counters and the sink. This is what makes it look shiny and extra clean.
    6:19 Demonstrating cleaning with baking soda and vinegar.
    7:30 Baking soda and vinegar makes a great drain opener. You can get the recipe here;
    www.livingonadi...
    7:50 Rinse
    8:26 Grab a towel and dry the sink and counters
    9:00 If you want to add an extra polish to your sink, you can also wipe it down with mineral oil or olive oil.

    To remove stains--Big thanks to the one below who suggested letting the powder cleanser sit on the stain in a paste for 20 minutes. It works and I'm delighted! I used Bon Amie as it is Eco-friendly and doesn't scratch. I bet the drying off at the end of each wash is the key to stopping more stains from forming. Thanks for the great video!

    There was one time i mixed denture tablets with borax and detergent soap to soak and wash curtains and when I drained water I was shocked how cleaned my sink was! I do use bar keepers freind to clean it as well; very good product, safe for stainless steel but not all surfaces. Thanks for your video ❤

    That is how I clean my sink. I don't dry it because a minute later it's full of dishes again and it's only me. But it looks beautiful when you dry it or polish it. Thank you for sharing. I love your single sink. I use to have a large single but recently replaced with a double sink which I regret. I feel like putting my old one back since I still have it. It was only 3 years old. SINCE I installed granite I went with the double. BIG mistake.!

    OMGosh a lady after my heart! You are 100% correct about the bleach disinfecting better than vinegar, and you don't like sponges. Me either, you can switch out a clean dish rag 10x's a day if you need to. Great video!

    Use Bar Keepers Friend is the greatest product to use for stainless steel of any kind. Use gloves .Makes old products look like new. Use on items bought second hand--makes them usable again.

    I'm a Comet user, but, one time, I ran out. So, I read that you can use Borax to clean the sink and also baking soda. So one day, I needed to clean the sink, so I grabbed my Borax and went to town on the sink. It was a stainless steel sink, also, and I've never seen my sink shine so much as it did when I used Borax. So, I told my Mom about it one day when I went to go visit, and she said when she was in Nurse's School in the 1950's, she said they used Borax to clean their classroom equipment and other stuff and how shiny it got everything. I also use baking soda, when I have it on hand, too, in a pinch. Does an excellent job. Thanks for the side by side comparison and demo.

    Hello! nice video and thank you for showing me how to clean a stainless steel sink, but I like to share some tips that might can help you as well. Make sure you clean the little faucets more and also to make your rag more cleaner, which my mom taught me this, rub it more to make it come cleaner after you use it a few times and even before you throw the rag into the washer if you will. I hope I was able to help as well.

    I bought stainless steel cleaner in a container that looks like the Comet one. It's not expensive and works well. It's also a powder you sprinkle on. I always use rubber gloves, too.

    I feel very motivated to go clean my sink right now. Thank you! I would add an essential oil to the baking soda and vinegar which would give it the uumph it needs to kill all the germs and make it just as effective as the bleach. :)

    Beautiful flowers! Love the sign that your son made. Children can get right to the point, can't they? lol Thanks for tips on cleaning a stainless steal sink. One thing that I do differently is instead of using my dishcloth, I use a wash cloth that I use as a rag because I'm not sure if the cleanser comes out completely when I wash it and I don't want any cleanser residue on my dishes the next time.

    • @LivingOnADime
      @LivingOnADime  9 лет назад +3

      +Janice Sosh Yeah, it was just so funny because he just walked upstairs one morning, wrote the sign, taped it on and then went back to bed. We just had to laugh! Yeah, for the cleanser I just put it in my white that I put on the extra cleaning cycle in my washer so it's not a problem for me but that's a great idea if you don't think it will all come out.

    I've used dry/wet sandpaper to remove some scratches and water spots from my stainless steel sink as well as my stainless steel pots. It just takes a small piece of lightly rubbing.

    • @martylucas8557
      @martylucas8557 4 года назад +2

      If you’re going to recommend someone use sandpaper on their sink or anything else for that matter...make sure they know the grit of the sandpaper you’re recommending. I’d start with 3000 grit wet/dry, then go to 2000 grit, then finish off with 800 grit. Make sure you keep the sandpaper wet while sanding.

    • @TC-dw6wg
      @TC-dw6wg 4 года назад +1

      Marty Lucas if your going to suggest sandpaper please do it in the correct order. Not 3000 to 800, but 800 to 3000.

    • @jlynn8843
      @jlynn8843 3 года назад

      @@martylucas8557 the comment above mine is right... You need to go lower grit, than higher. Higher than lower is just going to scratch the crap out of the sink.

    Fill up your sink with warm to hot water, pour in some Clorox and let sit for 10 minutes, and you can throw your wash cloth in there too and then pull the plug, rinse, and rinse the washcloth!

    I have a spray bottle filled with rubbing alcohol. I use it to clean and disinfect pretty much everything. I haven't found anything I can't use it on. It's especially great in the bathroom and in the kitchen. I spray my sponge and brush with it to keep them disinfected. Cheap, works, and I love the smell of it, even tho the smell does dissipate .

    I know this is an old post that I am commenting on but have you ever tried baking soda and peroxide make a paste and it cleans gas stove tops really well. You don't have to use a scrubber or brillo to get the brown spots off just a little bit of elbow grease.

    Good job Tawra ;) It's the same as my house. My sink is only clean and empty for maybe a few minutes before someone comes along and puts a dish in it. My 17 yo son also has his bedroom directly below the kitchen sink w/garbage disposal. I'm sure he'd agree with your son's note. Too funny. I also love the look of your soap pump dispenser. So clean looking, can be used for washing dishes or hands, and harder for kids to waste it. ;)

      I don't like sponges. My late husband used to buy them all the time. In fact, he bought some a few weeks before he died last year. I think they're in storage somewhere when we moved. I didn't want to throw them away since he bought them, but, I never used them myself. When he did the dishes, he liked using the sponges. I like wash rags. We were always so different, it was funny.

      Protect them from splitting the skin next to your finger nails !
      I thought that was a common problem for people with fibromyalgia.
      I have to wear some type of glove (no, I’m not scared of germs) to protect my hands from getting worse. It’s a daily battle.
      Didn’t mean to let that come across as rude at all but I couldn’t understand why you ( living on a dime ) would ask ‘to protect them from what?’ And then say that they don’t irritate your hands....so you knew the person was asking about irritation and not about germs.
