    In this video, I walk through from start to finish, exactly how to install an M.2 NVMe SSD drive in a Z370 chipset motherboard. We look at BIOS settings to optimize performance and understand how to overcome potential conflicts with currently install drives . Finally, we benchmark the sequential read/write performance of the Samsung EVO 970 Plus vs a Samsung EVO 860 SATA3, and both 7200 and 5400 RPM HDDs. I also provide some insight on what kind of impact you might expect on video editing performance when using an NVMe SSD drive.

It took me forever to install this, and if it wasnt for you, explaining that the nvme was taking my sata drives 5 and 6, i wouldve been stuck. I was getting just blank screens with no bios or anything after installing this, only until i moved my other sata drives to 3 and 4, did it finally work. thank you so much.

      Yeah that was good info, i run on the asus dual xeon motherboard Z10-PE with i think 7 drives in total, so adding this i will likely be forced to run in x2 mode but even then it would be way faster than my spinning drives for running a game like Star citizen that takes 5+ minutes to load today.

    You should initialize the drive with GPT partition style. It's newer system, it still allows to use NTFS file system, but is safer and less prone to errors. I think it's faster too. Will create more (4?)hidden partitions during fresh OS install, but they're not big.

    If you are wondering or you should go for mbr or gpt, just always go for gpt because mbr does not support thew newer uefi bios setting
    MBR can always be converted to gpt without having to install windows again or having to lose any data, so at the end it doesn't matter too much but it's always better to choose gpt in the first place and set your bios to UEFI
    If you want to convert your mbr to gpt just open cmd, enter this command
    mbr2gpt /convert /allowfullos
    and then restart, enter the bios and set it to uefi. (in some cases it automatically sets it self to uefi, i think this especially happens at newer motherboards so you can just try to let it boot first before entering the bios)
    Just for your information, MBR supports legacy and GPT supports both, the only thing converting mbr to gpt does is it takes a few mb from your drive and makes a new partition. so i think the chance it goes wrong is small.

    You are not supposed to screw the M.2 into the board.
    The board comes with a riser which you should place in the correct position.~
    Then you screw the M.2 into the riser, that way its level and not bent down to the board.

    • @googlewolly
      @googlewolly 4 года назад

      Just so that you know, SATA M.2 drives are similar in that they don't require cables. On paper, they're not as fast as NVMe. However, they perform almost identical in video games. Don't be one of those idiots getting NVMe for gaming; you gain virtually no benefit. That's a fact.

    • @brohvakiindova4452
      @brohvakiindova4452 4 года назад

      @@googlewolly I got a NVMe mainly for OS because I wanted to have at least some top tier parts, I have an additional SSD for games and a large HDD for general storage and old games where the loading times are limited by engine rather than storage (or simply not significant enough)
      as a first time completely building a pc and after trying to cable manage my old PC I just noticed how massively more convenient it is to simply screw the SSD on your mainboard, didn't know about SATA M.2 drives at the time so thanks for the heads up I'll consider it if I upgrade in the future but probably prices are going to drop until then anyway

    • @googlewolly
      @googlewolly 4 года назад

      @@brohvakiindova4452 Yeah - M.2 is nice. Do note, though, that using the M.2 slot usually (if not always) disabled one or two SATA ports. I'm not sure if it applies to just SATA M.2 SSDs or also NVMe M.2 SSDs being put into the M.2 slot.

    • @googlewolly
      @googlewolly 4 года назад

      @js59695 I stated why. Try reading the comment all of the way. NVMe provides virtually no benefit with respect to game-load times. If you can get a TLC NVMe for as much as a SATA SSD, go for it. Don't buy Samsung, though. They're overpriced.

    I think the standoff you used (at about 8:55) to screw down the M.2 is actually intended for the M.2 to rest on top of. (Yes, I know the standoff you screwed in was not intended for an M.2 drive, but the idea is the same.) You notice the standoff itself has threading on top to accept a small screw. That screw is what should hold down and secure the M.2. Your method obviously worked for you but I'm not sure whether it would or not for all mobos.

    • @ReeWrayOutdoors
      @ReeWrayOutdoors  3 года назад

      You're right - in this original video, I couldn't find an actual 'proper' screw in my parts kit so I used another standoff since it also had the right threads and secured the M.2 the same as the proper screw. Also, in this video, I (like a total noob) assumed the threaded nut on the MB was also a standoff and so failed to install the proper standoff directly on the MB first. I've noted that in a few other comments and have since remedied that misstep. I've also since gotten a few of the correct screws (and pinned a comment with link to them since a lot of people ask about that). Really don't know why they don't just include a couple of screws in the package with the M.2...

    Optimally you would want to put your base medium your working with on one drive with your final work completed to a second drive. This is far more beneficial for those that are still suing HD's, or slower SSD's. Most SSD's and M.2's will also come with provisioning software which is similar to using something like PrimoCache and a RAMDisk. For those that do not have a motherboard with M.2 capability, they make a PCIe M.2 adapters. There are no conflicts, just merely knowing how to go about configuring a system for optimal performance overall. For even more performance set your C: drives static pagefile from 512 to 1024mb with a dynamic part (system managed) on the fastest drive. But also move the USER and system TMP|TEMP folders to the fastest drive. There are certain system services that can also be switched to manual or to a off that are automatically turned on by default. Black Viper has a page that covers this should anyone wish to do a web search for it. For most people these are new concepts, while for others it is not. In this regard I appreciate your content that you have taken the time to share. Thank You. :)

      Thanks man! Just keep in mind that most of the performance benefit you'll experience will be in the moving files onto your NVMe, and adding clips to the project, and also a bit in creating cached or "shadow" files for faster editing. Render times will not be significantly affected.

    Can you do a video on installing an NVMe drive then switching Windows boot to the NVMe from a SATA SSD, please. I built my first pc recently an installed a Samsung 870 SSD and an Evo 960 NVMe. Windows got installed and boots from the SATA. I want to learn how to switch boot to the NVMe Samsung 960.

      Ryan R late but, you can switch which drive boots first from your bios.

    IMPORTANT NOTE: It has been correctly pointed out to me that the threaded nut on the M/B is not the standoff I'd assumed it was. To avoid the risk of over-straining the M.2 socket, you should add a standoff to that threaded nut, and then secure the M.2 drive to the standoff. I'm not sure why SSD mfg's don't just include a couple in the box with the drive. Anyway, here's an Amazon link to the necessary parts that should work for the vast majority of MB's: amzn.to/2IAjT0L

      Why did you install the drive without the standoff? The drive should be horizontally. Not pushed down to the motherboard. I don't think you understand what a standoff is. A standoff means that you STAND SOMETHING ON the standoff. Not screw the standoff over the stuff. The standoff goes UNDER the drive and the drive screw on top of the standoff with a small m.2 screw. The drive should be parallel to the motherboard and not at an angle. i.stack.imgur.com/FDvM3.jpg

      @ReeWrayOutdoors  4 года назад

      @@davedragomir6632 you're the 2nd person (that I'm aware of) to make this comment. To be clear, I did NOT remove the existing standoff. I simply used a spare one I had lying around as the set screw. You're correct though, you definitely should not secure it to the M/B without a standoff to support it. Had I known that some might think that's what I was doing, I'd have taken more care to clarify it....

      @@ReeWrayOutdoors ruclips.net/video/t7FwmQ20jRQ/видео.html Please look at 1 minute. You will see the standoff you forgot to install and the m.2 screw you should have used to screw the drive in. What you did is use a standoff to screw the drive instead of the m.2 little screw and you forgot the high standoff under the drive that screw on the already installed standoff on the motherboard. Please fix that unless you want your m.2 port to be damaged because of the pressure the drive is creating on the m.2 port.

    Like the video, but WHY not use as OS drive? The Samsung 970 will run 5-6 times faster than a 860 EVO! Video will be fine on the 860 EVO.

    • @ReeWrayOutdoors
      @ReeWrayOutdoors  4 года назад +1

      Yeah totally agree. At the time I did this video I just wanted to see how it did as a scratch drive for rendering. Not all that much as it turns out. Haha

      @@ReeWrayOutdoors Swap the drives around & you'll see & feel a big difference!👍
      You can restore the video drive by backup to external drive with Macrium Reflect (Free Edition), just make sure the partition will fit the EVO (restore only after the 970 EVO Plus boots). It's possible to then clone the 860 EVO to the 970 EVO Plus. Note that sometimes clones to NVMe SSD's doesn't always work, yet Windows 10 has the needed drivers, And Macrium can fix boot problems if media is created.
      Good Luck!

    Good video Wray, appreciate the time you took to record and edit the video. Also thanks for the tip on the freeware drive application, Crystal Disk Mark. On a side note, was wondering if you had room at the top of your computer case to install your nice Corsair AIO dual-radiator vs the front of your nice case? The inlets/outlets of your radiator should be at the bottom of your build to stop cavitation and fluid starvation of your AIO pump, which will cause premature pump failure. It appears that your AIO hoses are not long enough to put them at the bottom in the front configuration. Nice rig.

    • @ReeWrayOutdoors
      @ReeWrayOutdoors  3 года назад +1

      Sadly I don't. Only a single fan vent on the top. Also, the hoses aren't quit long enough to flip it around and put the I/O ports at the bottom. When I did the build, it was the first I'd done in about 20 years and AIO wasn't even an option back then. haha So it was new to me. But since this build , I've updated my knowledge quite a bit and look forward to a new build...as soon as this damn GPU situation gets better!

    • @scottyvincent
      @scottyvincent 3 года назад

      @@ReeWrayOutdoors I figured that may be the situation from what I could see in the video. I was preparing to teach my 14 yo how to put his Christmas present together and came across a video that explained the reasoning for the AIO positioning and had no idea before that either. The GPU shortage is affecting us too, I am forced to live on an EVGA 680, as I am not paying $800, $1000 or more, so I make due. Keeps me wondering if my old eyes are getting worse or the lack of graphics is the cause. Guess it about time to trade-in my CRT too LOL. Keep up the video work, I enjoy them.
