- This week marks the 70th anniversary of the Battle of the Imjin River, the Korean War battle perhaps most closely associated with the UK's involvement in the conflict. Sadly, Korea remains a largely forgotten war and only one film has ever been made about the British Army’s experience 1956’s 'A Hill In Korea'. In this video we'll discuss the battle, the super bazooka and the classic war film!

Thanks for sharing this, my great uncle Henry O,Cahan served with the Royal Ulster Rifles on the river Imjin, was a POW and made it back to Ireland...
I was just thinking Michael Kane served in Korea and then you mentioned him and he was in the movie! Art imitating life!
Yes! He describes his time in Korea in a few interviews and books, his description of a night patrol and hiding from the Chinese is really something.
I think its time for a short film on the lives of British actors who were veterans. Michael Caine of course but also David Niven, Spike Milligan and the immortal Richard Todd.
I definitely agree there! Might be something to work on.
@@TheArmourersBench Richard Todd had the unique experience of performing in a scene where the other actor was playing Richard Todd.
He did. There's some great behind the scenes footage of him chatting to the man he was playing on set!
@@TheArmourersBench Just to mess with people I think you should throw the former Arch Bishop of Canterbury, The Most Reverend and Right Honourable Robert Runcie MC in there as well.
The first Centurian kill was said to be a captured Cromwell tank during the Korean War.
One of those odd little happenings of war
If memory serves, the Cromwell in question was firing at Churchill Crocodiles.
Not too certain about that. From my understanding, the event took place on 11/02/1951, when two British Centurions commanded by Captain Strachan and First Lieutenant Redford found an unidentified tank hiding under the right side of the Han-river railway bridge while supporting a U.S. reconnaissance company. The commanders were ordered to engage and destroy the unknown tank. AP rounds were fired at it and only when the tank was checked, was it realized that the tank they had destroyed was a Cromwell.
my uncle was in korea as a 15 year old believe it or not and he never really wanted to talk about it he was a tank commander in the usmc and he almost lost his feet from the cold at some point and i think thats about the extent of it we know my grandmother signed him up as alternative to prison.
Wow that is really interesting, what a horrific place to be when so young.
@@TheArmourersBench he was a really cool guy he welded as a trade i believe he welded on polaris 2 missiles he died abut 10 years ago
Another excellent video. Great factual information included. I'll certainly look up the film & you're right about Korea being a largely unremembered campaign.
Thanks Craig, I love making all these videos but sometimes I just feel some topics need to be covered. And with this one I could hit three beats, the film is well worth tracking down online. Thanks for watching!
In 2019 or 2020 I started read a ton about that conflict (although on hold by now). And watched solid lecture course on youtube about it (in russian). It's definitely something. Thanks for a video!
Thanks Hans!
Should talk about the battle of kapyong.
Definitely, 27th British Commonwealth Brigade at Kapyong is probably even less well known.
3rd Royal Australian Regiment , Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, Royal Regiment of New Zealand Artillery and the US 5th Cavalry Regiment, got together for an ANZAC day BBQ, the Turks were on the way too ...but the Chinese People's Volunteer Army crashed the party. I’m not being glib the plans before the battle were to celebrate the first ANZAC day with the Turks as allies with a common enemy
@@xgford94 we are currently practicing for the kapyong day parade tomorrow. It will be pretty impressive.
the first tank killed by a centuran was a capturd cronwell
yes and it was trying to hide under a bridge to escape air attack. easy meat.
when i was in the TA are admin offser captin tommas was a gloster from that battle
Another great video!
I’m reading the book “Imjin River 1951” by Brian Drohan which led me to here.
It's a fascinating battle. Glad you found the video, hope you enjoyed it.
..To the last bullet, is worth a read too... @@TheArmourersBench
A war not entirely forgotten by Americans.
Where can this film be viewed?
People forget that the Korean War is still unresolved.
Indeed they do
It’s a shame Korea is forgotten
It really is Michael.
I cannot find your review of A Hill in Korea?

@@TheArmourersBench It say's 'video unavailable, this video is private'.
Ahh probably because it's now scheduled to go live this afternoon - a RUclips quirk! Will be live soon.
No one but the Glosters could have done it.
Just to be a complete nitpicker:
If he had fired that Bazooka for real, he would have taken his own legs off from the rockets back blast.
They'd definitely have a limp.
