Vietnam has fought and defeated countless Goliaths to achieve its liberation.
While our people in Palestine are still fighting their own Goliath, we wanted to learn, how did the Vietnamese do it? And what happens once this Goliath is taken down? What does a national identity built on liberation and resistance look like when the country’s at peace? And is Vietnam really at peace?
We traveled to Hanoi in the north and Ho Chi Minh City Saigon in the South to explore Vietnam’s story of liberation, and the story it's writing now.

@@phlilipsdo9771 Suppose Communism is so often equated with poverty. How then can the capitalist system in the United States be seen as a beacon of wealth when its citizens are burdened by countless forms of debt-personal loans, mortgages, student loans, credit card debt, auto loans, and more? Is this what prosperity looks like? In contrast, in a communist country like Vietnam, many people are financially capable of purchasing everything outright, without being weighed down by such debts.
Moreover, consider the disparity in homelessness rates between the U.S. and a communist country like Vietnam. The rate of homelessness in the U.S. is approximately 1,600% higher than in Vietnam (0.17% of the population versus 0.01%). Is this the affluence of capitalism that you speak of?
And surely, you must be familiar with the state of healthcare in the U.S. If Americans are so wealthy, why do so many avoid going to hospitals when they fall ill? Meanwhile, in a communist country like Vietnam, citizens can access modern healthcare at a fraction of the cost, and with far less financial strain:
      - The average healthcare expenditure per capita in the U.S. is a staggering 7,000% higher than in Vietnam (12,000 USD in the U.S. versus 170 USD in Vietnam).
      - The cost of a doctor's visit in the U.S. can be 1,000% to 4,000% higher than in Vietnam (100-200 USD in the U.S. versus 4-20 USD in Vietnam).
      - Medication prices in the U.S. are typically 500% to 1,000% higher, depending on the type.
And this doesn't even begin to touch on the various taxes Americans must contribute to sustain their system.
So, a word of advice to those in exile who remain dissatisfied with their homeland: don’t be too quick to judge. Returning to Vietnam might reveal that you’re not quite as well-off as the people you criticize.

Allow me to explain why his eyes sometimes filled with tears. As Vietnamese, we deeply understand the immense sacrifices our ancestors made for the independence we enjoy today. When the conversation reminded him of how much we lost in the past, and he realized that the peace we have is not eternal, the possibility of future invasions weighed on him. He choked up, not because he is weak or overly emotional, but because he understands that the determination for independence and freedom runs in our veins, passed down from generation to generation. He knows that, if necessary, we or our descendants will fight again, no matter the cost.

We didn't have napalm over us, but the same evil spirit, the same malice of capitalism is our common aggressor in our shared history.. Also, one of our most beloved singer, Víctor Jara, gifted uf with a deeply beautiful, powerful yet sad but hopeful: "El Derecho de Vivir en Paz" (The Right to Live in Peace), where Ho Chi Minh , "el tío Ho" (uncle Ho) and the people of Vietnam are admired and honored.
Regarding Palestine, we are brothers living together as a family for many decades and we have the gift having the largest palestinian population -or direct descendants- outside Palestine.
I feel so connected with both of you and that makes me feel encouraged and hopeful for what we can achieve together as humanity, as people who understands what is needed to do against colonialism but also without loosing what is most important: love and kindness.

Whenever I went to Vietnam for business, I have huge respect for their gentle-hearted people, but I also saw how they are a resilient and compassionate people at the same time. They treated visiting American tourists well even after suffering the barbarity of the US army savages who left so much destruction in the wake of their occupation. I wept when I heard the stories related by Vietnamese elders who recounted the tales of American barbarity, and when I visited the tunnels first hand I am amazed at their ingenuity and resourcefulness. For this reason I am proud to be a fellow ASEAN member country, because we have Vietnamese brothers in our alliance, and that have made it an alliance of strength and mutual respect, rather than colonialism and domination.

there is a term in Vietnam, so called "vietnamese heroic mothers" to contribute to the women, whose sons and husband lost their life fighting for our independence. There are millions of them and the most famous one is a mother, lost her husband to the french, then her sons, all 9 of them, died fighting the american. She is still sitting beside dinner table, waiting for her sons that will never come back, not even one.
someone said in an interview, that "there is no mother on earth doesn't love her children, but if we keep them away from the battlefield for their future, then there is no future for our nation".
our leader Ho Chi Minh once said "a people who not dares to stand up and fight for their own liberty, doesnt deserve to live in freedom".

My favorite quote from Ho Chi Minh is: "It was patriotism, not Communism, that inspired me"
Communism was just the political vehicle that he aligned with most. And in the early stages of the resistance and of HCM's political career--he was heavily influenced by the U.S. Declaration of Independence--modeling the one he wrote after it. Go check it out.
This was someone who held the U.S. in high regards, and reached out to Washington to try to establish friendly relationships and to request recognition of the newly declared independence and state, but was snubbed. He believed in elections (which ironically, the U.S. interfered with the one that was held in VN that was suppose to unite the country under a single leader)
My guess is.. HCM eventually became disillusioned by what the U.S. presents to the world as its values and how it contradicted their actual behaviors..

Ho Chi Minh mission in life is the independent. All those america, socialist, communism, 3rd international or any of all the politic party he ever take part of while in Paris is just a tool for him in that quest.
One of the founding father of FCP. But Ho Chi Minh put more concern about decolonize than class conflict, he bring up the colony problem at all the meeting of FCP, to the point other communist hate him and 3rd international well aware of his pseudo communism. As he always try to convince other that colony problem should be solve first. But 3rd international believe that free the worker class from capitalism is need to be done before anything else.
After getting rejected inside communism. He go to america to find another option. He send a letter to Frank D Roosevelt but get ignored. Then return to USSR, go through china to vietnam. Doing his own revolution. At sometime, communist send him to merge 3 different communist party in indochina then immediately get kicked out from the chair. Because they known Ho Chi Minh is not a true communist.
Some of true vietnamese communist sit in that throne, Tran Phu, Ha Huy Tap always criticize Ho Chi Minh for being too soft with landlord and capitalist. Pracmatic and betray his class.
Viet Minh, even tho later merge as one with VCP. initiation is not a communist party or any politic party. Some of them is communist. most of them dont. There are people of all the class and kind that join together to fight against Japanese and later France. Those communist inside the revolution doesnt happy with Ho for using force of capitalist and be cool with them, but they believe in Ho and still keep on fighting the war.
In the midst of ww2. Ho rescue an US pilot and escort him to china. From now on USA recognise a figure as Ho Chi Minh and decide to have him as a field agent for OSS ( later become CIA) code name Lucius.
After the ww2. Ho Chi Minh ask USA to recognise vietnam as an independent state. But Pentagon refuse. Say, small country should be under the arrangement of big country in the new world order. Vietnam need to be govern by the combination of China republic, British and France. Like how the korea have to be govern by USSR in the north and USA in the south. Which we already know how it turn out to be.
Then because of USA reject. after 5 years. Ho Chi Minh have to seek help from another Permanent Five in UN. The USSR. And then after France fall in Dien Bien Phu. Eisenhower scare of Vietnam will be the spark to spread communism to all asia. Then they going in for their political purpose. The rest is history.
Ho Chi Minh is really hurt by this action from USA. He never expect USA, to protect their power in new world order. ready to sacrifie its young man and shoot at vietnamese people. USA is no longer the hero who fight against Nazi, or the people who liberate themself from British a long time ago.

During the war Vietnam invaded Laos and Cambodia, installing Communist regimes that removed people's privacy and private land (I know as I watched interviews of people who fled those countries). Unless you are referring to Japanese/Spanish colonization, we Filipinos do not have much in common. The Philippines is a very anti-communist country.

No matter people like Ho Chi Minh or not, we have to admit that he's an extraordinary leader. Ho Chi Minh once said, "It is patriotism, not communism, that motivates me to give up everything for the independence and freedom of my country." This thought-provoking quote summarizes the essence of his motivations and challenges the commonly held misconception that his actions were solely driven by communist ideals. It's true that there's something fascinating about Vietnam. It's a poor and small country fearlessly going up against countless Goliaths and successfully defending its independence and freedom. In his book Ending the Vietnam War in Vietnam, Henry Kissinger (RIP) - former US secretary of state and national security adviser wrote: "Since Vietnam, the concept of power has radically changed." Personally, I think Vietnam's history is probably the most intriguing in the world.

Now Cham people still live happily as Vietnamese, enjoy better welfare than Kinh people (the majority ethnic group), free/low-cost medical care, free/sponsored education, extra points for university admission - things that many Kinh people like me are jealous of.

Brilliant work Salem. When Palestine is liberated we will look back at your work and realise that it was a small but important part of the movement towards achieving freedom

When the Vietnam Brother cried, I felt it too. Remembering what our Indonesian warriors on the field of battle during War for Independence and forefathers on a diplomatic stage. Their sacrifices and longing for the next generations to live free from colonization. Our first President, Soekarno, actually had a close relationship with President Ho Chi Minh. Both countries even commemorated each year on President Soekarno's Visit to Vietnam and President Ho Chi Minh's Visit to Indonesia. In regards to Palestine, the country is among the first to recognize Indonesian's independence. Therefore, Indonesia, among other countries who pledge their support to Palestine, striving to give whatever it is necessary for their freedom.
From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free...

2 interesting personalities, one is from the 'future', and one is still 'stuck in the ongoing past' wishing for that 'future'. We the audience are the ones in the present watching a time travel like no other

What an excellent presentation! Salem Barahmeh is very courteous and Khuyến Bùi is so gracious and intelligent and you made me choked on my tears several times. I went to school in the US in the late 70s and early 80s and I became friends with Vietnamese students who had to flee their countries and the sadness in them really affected me. I've been to Vietname and I can't help admiring the strength Vietnam's new generation have with determination to make the country better and better. BTW I'm Thai living in Thailand.

That’s exactly why Vietnam is one of my favorite places. They’re resilience and absolute hatred not by younger people, but by older people is incredible.
