I use this at work. I also run a MacBook Pro with Retina display at home. In my experience, the MacBook Pro runs AutoCad 2015 much smoother and quicker. My W540 is a good computer, but for over $2,500 (for my configuration), my cheaper MacBook Pro has given me a better experience.

@@danielwwf82 Hmmm..... $2500, vs. $370, and you get roughly, the same performance. I' assume you have the K1100m in your W540? My W540 K2100m runs AutoCAD 2015 quite a bit better than my workmates MacBook Pro. As a matter of fact, she's offered to purchase my W540 i7-4800mq, if I replace the IPS panel, with a 3k screen.

  • @dragunovbushcraft152
    @dragunovbushcraft152 5 лет назад +13

I know this is a very old video, but I'm going to chime in anyways. I noticed a lot of negative comments on this portable graphics workstation. I bought a used one and did all the upgrades:
    i7-4800mq
    K2100m Graphics
    32gb/RAM
    Samsung, 860 EVO 500gb SSDx2
    IPS display (Lenovo upgrade)
T450 trackpad transplant (done before I bought it.)
PCIexpress, that added an additional, two USB 3.0 ports
Win7Pro (I chose this due to Win7's excellent gaming capabilities).
This computer, is replacing my T440p, with nVidia GT 730m graphics, and i7-4700mq processor. A beast in it's own right!
I paid $370 USD off Ebay. Upgrades cost me another $183.
First off, those who said it's junk?... It's STILL a thinkpad, and built like a tank. Dropping it, or spilling liquid on it, STILL does no harm.
Yes, the original trackpad sux, however, as I'm a "mouser", I don't really care.
The display, without question, is one of the best I've ever used.
The keyboard on the T420 is better, yes. However the W540 keyboard is still LEAGUES above 90% of other laptops, AND it's backlit.
I've heard that it's not a very good "gamer". I disagree. It hasn't failed to play any game I have, on at LEAST, high settings.
The K2100m Graphics, plays older games MUCH better than any newer GPU. It also plays NEWER games as well, and nearly as well as some of the newer, dedicated, video chipsets. It plays ANYTHING I want to play with ALL the graphics option on "Ultra".
I have YET to see any newer computer, that DOESN'T have a $3500+ price tag, that performs better overall than the W540.
The i7-4800mq processor, out performs MOST newer processors for over all, real world computing. In short, the ThinkPad W540 is a pure, unadulterated BEAST, with the right combination of upgrades.
For $553, you're NOT going to find a better, across-the-board performer!
For the naysayers.... You obviously haven't used one of these. If the funky trackpad is THAT important to you, then THIS machine just isn't for you, Go buy a "Wally-World" special, with a "button clicky" touchpad.

@@BooredAtWork You're welcome. Great video, BTW. It just chaps my hide to see stupid comments like "Crappy touchpad! Junk!" These are comment made by those who shouldn't be trusted with pointy objects, children, or decent laptops. If you don't like the trackpad, REPLACE IT! $25, and ten minutes (or less) of your time, are all it takes.
I've been a computer programmer/builder/repairman, since 1978, and I'm telling you, that the W540, along with the T420/T430/T440p, are the best built, most serviceable, most capable machines ever built, in my opinion, and I've either owned, worked on, or currently own nearly everything that's been built, at one time, or another. :)

This is an older device now. The older models like the W510, W520 and W530 are still available as refurbs and are really good for editing photos and videos. Some of the W's even have hardware colour calibration. Even the older models have excellent screens. Lots of repair and upgrade parts are still available. If you drop one, you should worry about breaking your foot or the floor. The ThinkPad will be fine!

We are close to 2021 and while Apple and other companies want to charge you 1.5k+ for their latest models, this ancient masterpiece is by far the best laptop for the money. @@sem_7015 I ended up getting the W541. No major difference. Just the touchpad buttons are back. I did some research and these W500 models have some compatibility issue with Premiere Pro 2020, which forced me to install the Adobe 2019 suite. I have not had any compatibility issues. My workflow is smooth and tidy with this laptop. The one thing I did have to tweak was: set Premiere Pro to automatically turn off the GPU when rendering. The NDIVIA GPU isn't powerful enough, so it crashes when rendering complex compositions.

ugly as all heck for those who do not have any idea about thinkpads - the problem is exactly the opposite, that it does not look as classic as it should - do your homework boys about thinkpads and then comment - there is a large number of very bad choices in the new thinkpads - most of them have to do with drop of quality, no status leds, not so sturdy case, out of center trackpoint because of num keypad, no lid lock, screen flexes, and !!!! no trackpoint buttons!!!! what is this awful touchpad design??

I do utterly detest new laptop keyboards. Lenovo completely dropped the ball when they changed from the classic design.
Because of this, Thinkpads went overnight from being for Linux geeks, programmers, engineers, etc. to being better-suited for useless farting around like a Dell or Macbook or something. Getting anything done quickly on one of those keyboards isn't a waltz like with the old ones, but a wrestling match.

I can confirm there's a lot of flex. The hinges being tight are also a reason. My W540's display has warped a tiny not-very-noticable-bit due to the years of opening and closing it. I would suggest loosening the hinges a bit.

If you want a gaming laptop get a consumer/gaming machine. It will be cheaper and higher specced for that. These cost more because the quadro gfx GPUs are necessary for cad purposes. A very niche purpose. If you don't do cad your an idiot to get one of these. Thinkpads and the like are also famous for external build durability at the expense of size/style. This is important for a work laptop, heavily used, shared etc. But not for a personal one which is more carefully looked after.

Both IPS screen for the 540 are excellent though, a step up from even the legendary panel of 530. The trackpad is upgradable. I guess it depends on which features are used by the owner. To me lack of lights doesnt hurt my activities. I agree though that the offcenter keyboard was a big step down even though the keys feel good.

Then get yourself a T430. The USB is marked with "SS". look a little harder. You don't NEED all the extra lights, The trackpad works just fine if you bother to learn how to use it.
It sounds to me, like you were born with either no hands, or eyes, or a sub-par brain (16bit Processor, 8 bit bus).

Sad to say Lenovo RUINED the Thinkpad. Once a great brand has been reduced to cheap junk. Typical of made in China stuff.

This computer sucks, just google "W540 won't wake up" If you own this computer there is a problem with BIOS and Intel Driver compatibility whereby anytime it goes to sleep or hibernates the main monitor won't wake up. However, if you are running multiple monitors the other ones will. I've tried updating bios, drivers and the like including downgrading and cannot get this solved. Lenovo is silent on this issue.
