As a handyman with electric background, I think your thought process and testing is better than most sparks I know. And it's about time we sleeved hot & cold with appropriate colours and direction of flow.
We do maintenance and installs for a large landlord firm, they got a company in to do 3-4 unvented system installs, we were busy at the time and was happy for the other company to come in and do them. Every one of them has huge issues. One of them, they put an end cap on the heating zone valve, and the hot water primary return ties in to the central heating, so when the hot water is on the entire house heats up, this is obviously through the summer so students turn off all the rads and it overheats. It's crazy how bad it is, but they all have different weird and wonderful problems, fit by a fairly large known company. It's crazy how bad some are and get away with it. Edit: good one on that job, must've been a right hassle, at least you got through it fairly calmly! GJ
Thanks mate, yeah that's the problem having to deal with other people's mistakes. Throws you off completely because everything you're doing is right but someone somewhere has messed up and it just complicates the whole job!
only thing with leaving unvented cylinder without a zone valve on the flow means that if heating is on it’s still heating the water up, depending on temp of boiler flow, can cook it and set off tprv.
Very helpful video my friend, you partially full fill my wish making video on unvented cylinder, now my wish is to watch you installing unvented and explaining about it, thank you very much. Really enjoying your videos and learning from it, and I am also using your technic.
Iv had a combi piped back to front in the hot and colds and that took a lot of head scratching . Gives you all the symptoms of a blocked plate. Often the way when they drop down below a countertop etc
Brother... i feel your frustration with so called 'heating engineers' who cant fault find heating electrics and just solve the problem by changing everything and charging accordingly!!!!. My brother brought a property to let, and he left the repairs to the estate management company. Hes not someone to quibble when things go wrong, as he doesn't want the tenant to suffer. On a y plan 3 port system the engineer diagnosed and replaced a programmer. My brother then later got a call to say the system still wasnt working, and the engineer wanted payment for changing the thermostat also but now a new mid position valve was also required. I said not to pay and i would call in over the weekend. It transpired before i got my electrical testers out that the wiring looked incorrect and some cables weren't even connected. After tracing and wiring correctly all was left working. I explained to my brother there was no way whoever done the job knew what they were doing but still charging top dollar. After a strongly worded email to the management company they refunded my brother his money back as they didnt want to get into a 'my engineer is better than yours' spat...😂🎉
@@cputilitysolutions the funny thing is, up to that point I never felt fully confident of electrics, but it showed me that my fault finding process was methodical and actually better than I thought. I guess when you got a love for what your doing, your more inclined to be more diligent..

Just been out to a semi new build today 11 different engineers been there not one of them had seen the flow and return round the wrong way took me 5 mins to diagnose and 2 hours to swap round now no banging when the zone valves shut off cos the bypass is now in the correct orientation. Does make you wonder what these people are actually doing heating can be challenging don't get me wrong but its not rocket science, people need to slow down and take time to get it right the first time.
@@cputilitysolutions I get called out on “warranty calls” people haven’t even moved in and the ceilings are down all sorts. No pride these days it seems, and I work for a boiler manufacturer and get loads of hot and colds the wrong way round.
hi friend nice vedios so heplfull ... by the way , from where did you get that bucket bag???? i couldnt find it in ebay or screwfix.... pls let me know ,,, if you dont mind. again .. nice videos .. Thankyou
Great video mate! With the installer having gone back and corrected the flow & return, would the bypass need swapped round again, with you having turned it around to correct the heating not working?
How did you find you're F gas training mate..? Ive recently just done it as well, actually enjoyed it 😂 what avenues are you looking at going down to get use of it..?
Yeah the place I done mine were really good! Actually felt I learned something. Plan is to start getting into aircon after silly season so could do those in the summer and boilers in winter or something like that
Yeah, I found it good as well, adding another string to the bow as they say... was thinking the same, air con is defo becoming a bit more popular in this country now I find so a good branch to the business, Good luck to you pal 👍
Out of curiosity, how much did you charge for that job? Due to the extra time spent figuring out someone else’s mistake? Or did you just give a price before attending and sucked it up as a win some you lose some, kind of scenario?
Nope I charged and got paid for the work I done. I'd agreed a price for the unvented bits & bypass beforehand and then I charged hourly (£80+vat/hr) for the extra time to investigate the fault
Piped cold water to megaflo wrong you should of taken old check valve out and put new pressure check valve before combination valve (check manufacturer insulation guide)
Tbf putting zone valves on return prolongs the life of zone valves as they work on a lower temperature But that was total installer error as it was crossed over all over shop A real mess If I zone heating I put them on the return but if it’s to a cylinder I put them on the flow so anyone in the future knows what’s going on
Bang on, in theory I could have done that and it would have potentially sorted the issue. However the customer had said some rads used to get hot even when running just HW, so there would have still been the issue of reverse circulation
I take it they basically had it coming through the zone valve the wrong way As the flow and return wrong at the boiler You’ve had some belting jobs lately mate That cylinder change on warranty took the buscuit
Good job Chirag. Not always the same problem. Excellent diagnosing skills..❤
Thank man 👊🏾

Interesting point on colours for flow
Thanks man. Like the idea of colour coding heating pipes 👌🏾
We salute your dedication brother, these waillant boilers have the internal bypass

I know lots of sparks who dont know to read a basic heating plan , most sparks just know how to change sockets and lights
Sad but true 😅

I’ve had the same new build house flow and return wrong, or hot and colds the wrong way round… that’s a fun one will work for a bit 🤦♂️
Sometimes it's a conversion without proper pipe tracing... or not checking if the new boiler has a built-in bypass..
New builds are riddled with problems 🤦🏾♂️

Surely a bypass is required on an S plan where both valve could potentially be closed. At least with a Y plan one side will always be open.
Correct 👍🏾
