Summary:
Endoscopy is usually best performed in the morning hours of the day where the patient is usually fasting overnight. The general instructions given to the patient are the patient is asked not to consume any solid food for at least five to 6 hours before performing an endoscopy and when it comes to liquids, the patient is asked not to consume any liquids or juices for at least 2 to 3 hours before performing endoscopy. Why? Presence of solids or liquids hinders or obscures the view of the gastroenterologist and there is a chance that we might miss few lesions with presence of food in the stomach and also the presence of solid or liquid in your stomach can trickle up into the throat and it can cause infection to the lungs, which is called aspiration pneumonia.
