BabyMetal are dancers who sing songs that are written by professional songwriters.
Band Maid is 5 massively talented musicians who write and perform their own amazing music. Other than all of them being Japanese, they are vastly different from each other.

    😂 “I want a big chorus…and a guitar solo, then I’ll be happy.”
My friend, there is much joy ahead for you!
    Band Maid! 🔥 ❤
Your thoughts about this fitting in with a TV show isn’t just a “you” thing. This is a song which I refer to as their “cinematic rock.” Big, bombastic storytelling. Another one is “Wonderland;” however that one is more jazz and progressive influenced. Band Maid blends and bends genres.
As far as nit picking criticism? Welcome. You will need a detective’s eye to find the imperfections, but even when you do, it simply reinforces the genuineness of their talent and confirms just how much darn work they’ve put into their craft

The singer, Saiki, barely breathes during her vocal lines. It is insane to actually see it broken down by "instrument".

  • @daaaaaave

    Nice attention to details.
Kanami (lead guitar) is pretty close to a robot. The sheer number of notes that she hits in any given song, and the fact that they always play upwards of 20 songs per set is a little mind-boggling. It's easy to underestimate how hard her job is until you try to learn one of their songs and realize that she's shredding through the whole chorus, there are like 5 songs worth of riffs in one song, and doing like 10 different change ups, and messing with the timing, etc.
Saiki (lead vocal) will return the crowd's energy, which by and large enhances the songs, but can throw her accuracy off a little, and she tends to need a couple of songs to get really warmed up. She sounds more stable in the studio, because she's physically more stable, whereas she's emoting and dancing on the stage. I like the studio version of Puzzle, but I'd take basically any live version over it.

Hello from Staffordshire and welcome to Band-Maid! The best hard rock band I have heard in my 58 years on this planet. They don't stick to any one genre and often mix genres in songs. They are extremely diverse and have an extensive back catalogue featuring Punk, Pop-Punk, Hard-Rock, Classic Rock, Metal, Prog, Blues, Jazz, Groove, Rap etc. From face melting 220 bpm punk-prog to ballads, instrumentals to acoustics they do it all. They can make you headbang, they can make you pogo, they can make you cry like a baby. They are also five of the nicest people in music, without a shred of ego. They are funny and fun and world class musicians to boot. They are currently into their 11th year with the original line up.
Btw, Miku the rhythm guitarist (red rose) formed the band. She had the idea of Band-Maid after working as a maid in Japanese maid cafe's. Her idea is a concept called "The Gap" - that is what you see (cute maids) is NOT what you get (Hard Rock/Punk/Metal). They take the maid café concept literally. They call their concerts "servings" and their fans "Masters and Princesses". Oh, and Miku is an 810 year old small pigeon. Welcome to the pigeon hole Po!

I would check the studio recording before calling out a missed note. Kanami is one of the most unique guitarists in recent years. She loves to do weird things and isn't afraid of dissonances at all.

Good first reaction, it's good to see some actual critique of their music as far as technicalities. They're human, I can handle the notion that they make mistakes from time to time.
As far as things you wanted to hear... I think instrumentally, you would enjoy the music video for "From Now On", or the live performance of "Hate?". For catchy choruses I think Domination (live), Choose Me (MV), or Don't You Tell ME (Live), will be fun. For the lead singer really pushing her vocals I think Wonderland is a good bet.
They just did a live performance with The Warning and I think there will be a song from that eventually that will really push Saiki's upper limits, but she did have vocal surgery a several years ago now, and has been training her voice ever since, so every year I feel like it gets stronger and stronger. The more recent you go the more powerful she gets.

Everyone’s talking about Kanami’s “missed note” so I’ll talk about Saiki’s singing. I’m no expert but all I can say is that Band Maid concerts must be taxing for her. Their songs are very wordy, plus they play 20+ songs per show so she’s singing A LOT.

Welcome, Matteh. You are embarking on (along with many others - over 200 million views just on their official YT channel, plus over 40 million reactor plays!) an awesome, progressive, hard-rock journey with 5 incredible women. Here's my intro blurb for those who may be new to Band-Maid:

BAND-MAID’s songs and sound beat with the heart and soul of all rockers. But you’ll also hear heavy influences of Prog, Punk, Metal and Pop, with nice touches of Blues, Jazz, Funk and Grunge. Sometimes they use multiple genres within the same song. Their Composition, Execution, Joy of Playing, Consistency (130+ songs), Uniqueness, Charisma, Charm and, oh yeah, Cuteness factor, position them as becoming the hard rock Beatles of our time! In other words, they’re destined for mega-stardom.
Each member's personalities are super interesting and their musicianship among the best. Their writing, arrangements and overall sound, especially guitar tones and drums, are kick-ass! Having seen them LIVE, I can honestly say their performance, sound, stage appearance, and band synergy is off-the-rails spectacular!
Band-Maid is the only band in decades where I love nearly EVERY song they’ve done. I have over 70 favorites! "Thrill" (2014) is a great place to start: ruclips.net/video/Uds7g3M-4lQ/видео.html Their songs from albums Unleash, Unseen World, Conqueror, World Domination, Just Bring It, Brand New Maid, and New Beginning drive even more - Hate?, Shambles, Influencer, Warning, No God, Different, Black Hole, Rinne, Blooming, Moratorium, Domination, Clang, Dice, Spirit, Don’t You Tell Me, Turn Me On, Fate, Play, Hide-And-Seek, Secret My Lips, Puzzle, Choose Me, I Can’t Live Without You, and on and on.
But don’t miss out on their powerful, beautifully written, mid-tempo songs like Daydreaming, Bestie, About Us, Memorable, Anemone, Endless Story, PAGE, At The Drop Of A Hat, Mirage and Smile... or more punky like After Life, Don’t Let Me Down and Screaming… or funky like Bubble… or bluesy like Manners and The Dragon Cries… or poppy like Start Over… or a bit jazzy like Wonderland… or progressive like No God, Giovanni, and Black Hole… or cultural like the Band-Maiko series… or instrumentals like From Now On, Don’t Be Long, Onset, Without Holding Back and Going Nuts… or their many acoustic versions like Catharsis and Sayonakidori... and last but not least, their Anime hits (AniMaid) like Sense, Glory and Unleash!!!!! (from their own Anime MV (series?)): ruclips.net/video/7LB_EPS48HE/видео.html)
And many songs are represented with over 50 well produced music videos. ruclips.net/user/BANDMAID
Most performances should be experienced from their LIVE audience & online OKYUJI concerts:
 2023 Yokohama 10th Year Anniversary Concert “Endless Story” ruclips.net/video/Za1y-RRVd70/видео.html
     ONLINE OKYU-JI (Feb. 11, 2021) “No God” ruclips.net/video/nAdWnIRjGak/видео.html
     Tokyo's LINE CUBE SHIBUYA (February 14, 2020) “Domination” ruclips.net/video/QbyQCJn6rYg/видео.html
     ZEPP 2018 “Real Existence” ruclips.net/video/-qQnKILR5u0/видео.html
 Shinkiba Studio Coast 2017 and other full concerts are on bandmaidprime.tokyo, bili, and official Band-Maid’s DVD/BD/CD.
And some of the better quality fan videos are excellent. Here’s two of what it’s like to see Band-Maid LIVE at an intimate venue:
 Shot by Pat McKee from their 2023 US tour concert in Detroit: ruclips.net/video/DgxU-MVjta0/видео.html
     See the Maids 2023 Rockville Festival’s short-set perfection performance: ruclips.net/video/vjZkNeoGmhc/видео.html
If you like Band-Maid, make sure to support them by purchasing some concert tickets, live streams, CD, DVD/BD & merch, etc. bandmaid.tokyo
Like most Band-Maid songs, I like them from the get-go but really start to appreciate them after more hearings and seeing their LIVE videos. I'll go back and see an older song like YOLO, Order, Shake That, Freezer, Don’t Let Me Down, Before Yesterday, Real Existence, Non Fiction Days and Alone, etc. and realize there's no band that can consistently construct and play like Band-Maid.

    Band-Maid Members:
Saiki Atsumi (Sy-i-Key or Psyche) “StarQueen" - Lead vocals, arrangements and melodies. At 30 and the youngest, “Sensei” (Teacher) as band members call her, has the last word on many musical decisions. High-heels or sneakers, Sai-chan’s smile melts away her sometimes perceived, coldish persona. Saiki’s powerhouse performances, charisma, and voice focus the experience that’s driven her to the top echelon of hard rock frontwomen... or frontmen!
Miku Kobato (Me-Ku) "Small Pigeon" - Rhythm guitar, vocals, lyricist, 32 years old. “Koba”, as Saiki calls her, is the Band founder and a firecracker MC & PR SpokesPigeon, po! Her “Magic Spell Time” charm and energy ignite the room. Kuruppo! No, no, no… KURUPPO!!
Kanami Tono (Ka-Na-Me) “Princess” - Lead guitar, keyboards, 32 years old, is a prolific writer of most Band-Maid material. Kanami (translates “Song Wave”) is a possessed riff-slayer who’s so damn adorable it hurts. The only thing you want from Mincho is more!
Akane Hirose (A-Ka-Nay) "Gorilla" - Drums, 33 years old, band energizer & co-clown with MISA. Achi’s talents include massive consumption of noodles and bananas, of course, (even during performance!) while revolutionizing rock drumming with relentless drive, dynamics and the kick. This “DrumZilla” is the Party!
MISA (Me-Sa) "Barefoot Assassin" - Bass, 31 years old. An alluring free spirit driving her 5-string to rapturous low-ends while pulling off surprising counter leads with Kanami, off-stage MISA is the band’s goofball ballerina. Sometimes seen as the Mysterious One because she lets her instrument do the talking, the Assassin literally kills it… every note... uniting Band-Maid’s world-class rhythm section. A slug of JB, a slight grin, and let the slappin’ begin… MISA! MISA! MISA!
Maidiacs (Maid-e-acts) - Band-Maid’s crazed yet supportive, knowledgeable and loyal Super Fans.
    [BAND-MAID NEWS]
 BAND-MAID PRIME - Special Video Distribution Website. Along with nearly 50 great play-through’s by each member, concerts and skits, Band-Maid management / label(s) have included the Acoustic Christmas 2021, ZEPP 2018 and Shinkiba Studio Coast 2017 concerts! Fans can now see more than 50 great live performances with awesome audio, etc. like Fate, I Can't Live Without You and the great MISA / Kanami exchange in Don't You Tell Me. Those concerts are two of the best produced & performed concerts ever recorded, IMO. bandmaidprime.tokyo
 The Maids SOLD OUT 2023 US & Mexico tour wrapped up and was a fantastic success. And so many great live fancams to watch! Their playing and antics were as fresh and fun to experience from first show to last. BRAVO Band-Maid!!!!! In addition, their Japan tour finished up with 13 concerts, AND they’re writing and recording for their new album. Their 10th Anniversary Tour concluded at Japan’s 17,000 seat Yokohama Arena on Nov. 26, 2023 and in Hong Kong Dec. 21! And their latest 10TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR SPIN OFF concert at KT ZEPP YOKOHAMA on February 22, 2024, where they played songs not performed at the 10th anniversary tour final at Yokohama Arena, was SOLD OUT, as usual!

Great reaction! The acoustic performance of this song at Zepp Tokyo (2018) is much more emotional. The back-ground vocals were by Miku, she is a former idol and sings lead on some songs. The only official video where you get to hear Miku sing lead is "Sayonakidori", which happens to be another acoustic version. If you wanted to check out more of them, I would suggest "Blooming" as a well rounded song or "HATE?" if you like solos.

Saiki has been through a few different vocal seasons, including surgery from which she seems to be massively recovered, and they know better how to care for her instrument now. Puzzle is a strained story, so I wouldn't put it past Saiki to be OK sounding a little strained, which may be easy on this one. For an alto to navigate those fast fairly-high register-crossing large intervals staying in mix voice seems hard to me, and I often wonder if this piece was written specifically to challenge her, which is something they do. People will mention Wonderland (official live), where I believe the story is Kanami wrote it because she wanted to hear all parts of Saiki's pallette on one song, and hear it you can 🙂

Thanks for solid intelligent remarks. Some fans are zealots and think Band Maid can do nothing wrong. I say they are human but rarely make a mistake. As for Saiki, I consider her range and power to be good but not great. Her strength is in emotive and cadence. I think of her as a R&B singer in a rock band.

I think Saiki isn't like the greatest singer of all time, but I think it's easy to underrate her, because of the position she's put in, with the music that they write. Like, the demands on her breath control, and how much they mess with timing, etc., you'd struggle even if you had great training. Like, you can watch someone do something of a high difficulty and not do it flawlessly, and get the wrong idea about their skill. You'd need an apples to apples comparison, and I haven't seen a Band-Maid cover where someone's just kicking the crap out of Saiki's vocals.

@@daaaaaave To be clear, I am NOT underrating, nor even remotely suggesting she is sub par. Let's just say she is above average as a singer, but certainly not superb. My reference as a superb singer is Linda Rondstadt. As for mistakes, I repeat the idea of human, but rarely make mistakes. As for comparing cover versions, not aware of any by recognized talents. You are comparing a professional to amateurs.

Interesting reaction. Plenty more to discover with this band, 120+ bangers, can’t go wrong, try From Now On (MV) next, then maybe Don’t You Tell Me (official live). Sterling work Roger 😉

Welcome to the world of Band-Maid. Picking out the imperfections...nice. It's OK, to me the imperfections make the live experience real. I've seen them many times live. A missed note, wrong note or a pitch missed from time to time happens. The reality is, I've heard that in every live concert performance I've seen, regardless who was performing. Now the one's which are a disappointment are the one's where they aren't great musicians and/or the singer/singers can't sing. And you know there must have been many takes and some studio magic being done.😂 I hope the imperfections don't stop you from exploring the rest of their portfolio, because it's deep, diverse, complex and pure genius. PO! 🕊 🤘😆🤘

So I would ask what note did she miss? I have been a musician for many decades and I can say she didn't. But if you believe so break out that guitar and show us what she missed.
JK. I'm just busting your balls a little bit

He's got a pretty good ear. Right at 5:15 that first high note of the solo. It was a little more noticeable on the livestream. I noticed but I've heard it so many times it's ingrained in my brain. Pretty good to pick up on it right away.

Babymetal is not a band. It's a weird project where grown women pretend to be teenagers and session musicians hide their faces so they won't be recognized in other projects. BAND-MAID is honest.

I am not a guitarist , but Kanami's " missed note" looks and sounds like she had a brain fart on how long the solo was supposed to be. So she corrected by just finishing. Idk. Just what it appeared.

Please post a transcription (TAB is fine) showing the guitar solo as it should have been played, correctly, and how Kanami played it with the missed or flubbed note. Because I can't find what you're referring to. THANKS!

Well your ignorance was very obvious. They are The best Rock band in. the world. They have been together for 11 years now. Also prior to covid they toured Europe including GB every year. I'm expecting they will tour Europe within the next year.

If it’s ignorant to not have heard of a band then the whole world is ignorant friend. It would be impossible to know every band in the world and there is always a time before you discover a band (even if they are the best in the world) when even you were ignorant of them.

Every time you speak over the music, the volume drops for 5 seconds. Very annoying. Pass.
