    Hi Tim, hope you had a nice Christmas. Another grim weather day, but that certainly adds to the wonderfully atmospheric shots. I can feel the damp in my bones watching this video, as well as the smell and the taste of the steam. Stay safe, mask up and lets ride this omicron variant out. All the best, Ian.

    Thanks for all of your wonderful uploads over the last year, Tim. We are "dead lucky" up here having a pool of exceptionally gifted RUclipsrs who each record in their own unique way the exciting (to rail fans anyway!) activities in our area, and we in Cumbria are in turn blessed at being one of the focal points of such rail activity.
    As others have said, "keep up the good work" and I look forward to seeing what you can produce when you let your drone venture forth on such rail projects (maybe)!
    I love your editing style, which is in my opinion, your own particular "trademark". I am envious of your abilities, but very much enjoy the fruits thereof ...
    It does create the impression of you having more cameras than you actually have, and even a whole "OB crew" with you. Well done!
    Martin

    • @schoolshorts
      @schoolshorts  2 года назад

      Hmmm - something strange going on with RUclips. I published a reply to you about an hour ago and it has disappeared - let's see if I can remember just what I said.
      Thanks Martin for your kind remarks. We are indeed lucky in this part of the world both to enjoy all the railway activity and the wonderful scenery in which it occurs.
      I fully intend to continue in 2022 - provided (as my Irish relatives would say) I'm spared!
      I suppose I learnt the basics of my craft/hobby back in the 1970s/80s working with Super-8 cine film, horrifically expensive and forcing one to adopt an economy of style.
      Modern electronic technology has such enormous capacity that it's all-too-easy to simply shoot miles of footage (if that's not a contradiction in terms) and then use the best bits - only a very rich man could afford to do that in 8mm days.
      When filming in Carlisle station I use just one camera but out on the lineside I have two and - yes - hopefully in 2022 the drone will come into use when filming out in the countryside.
      Oh - and I'm very much on my own - not a single assistant, let alone an OB crew!
      Anyway, let's get Christmas/Hogmanay/New Year out of the way, avoid Omicron - and then we can see what 2022 brings. Every good wish to you.

    Your uploads are a joy to watch. Caught your earlier video of the village you live in down in Dumfries and Galloway - a place I haven't come across in my extensive travels around Scotland. Certainly a more relaxed pace of live compared to here in the central belt. Looking forward to more of your video's next year. Merry Christmas - Euan

      Thanks Euan. Dalswinton is certainly a quiet little backwater, remote from the hurley-burley and troubles of the wider world- although surprisingly rich in history, much of which isn't mentioned in my Christmas greetings video - something else for the future!

    Tim, you seem to be one of the few editors who realise that random people, ambient noise etc forms part of the scene. Your excellent videos are of "the railway" and everything that entails, rather than continuous closeups of locomotives and container wagons!

    • @schoolshorts
      @schoolshorts  2 года назад

      Thanks Steve. I'd dearly love to be able to make more use of the people on the station - but - when I first became interested in photography in the early 1960s I could safely and legally film - and publish - anybody or anything, subject to only two restrictions. My work must not offend against the Official Secrets Act (Prohibited Places) and the obscenity acts, which were extremely vague and ineffective at that time. Today, however, it's a very different story and filming anyone without specific permission is becoming a very dangerous activity.
      A shame, really, for people provide much of the real interest in any situation - even if it's just the crowds milling around 60103.

    Perfect start illustrating the silent power of steam 11:15. Is it not allowed for the steam loco to `run around' on the mainline rather than use the Class 47 (which I understood was there only for a failure) ?

    • @schoolshorts
      @schoolshorts  2 года назад +1

      The problem is turning the steam loco to face in the right direction for the return journey - the old turntables have long been removed. At Carlisle the triangle at Upperby depot is used for this purpose. Sometimes the steam loco will head off by itself to be serviced and turned, leaving the diesel to shunt the empty stock out of the way of regular service trains; on other occasions the diesel will haul the entire set to the depot - it's anyone's guess which will happen on any particular day!
      The diesel serves several purposes - for some sets it's needed to provide electrical power for air conditioning, sometimes it can provide assistance in the event of poor track conditions. If you look back over my videos of the last two or three years you'll see that many of the steam-hauled trains have no diesel attached. Bear in mind that a class 47 diesel adds a weight equivalent to about four standard Mark 1 carriages.

    Well, I didn’t realise that the European Commission pallets were being moved!. Usually it’s done at great expense ( not to themselves of course) between Brussels and Strasbourg ( to satisfy the French ‘ ‘naturalement’). An ‘ It’s TOO grim up North’ would surely ensue though I couldn’t deduce if the consignment of doubtless hidden fine wines, gourmet food, etcetera was heading South. We traveled with the Flying (not F(lying) as certain witticisms have it) Scotsman on a preserved line. As to a Grim Carlisle, it’s generally similarly grim in most places when overcast. Grim?. A Viking who established Grimsby. I remember watching Oscar Wilde ( the locomotive, even a Methuselah like myself is not THAT old!), on a school trainspotter trip to York in the early 1960’s, which wore the same ‘German Blinkers’, although our present day ‘Thought Police’ would surely condemn such a phrase for its double-entendre!. Thank you again for your video you are obviously of ‘hardy stock’ braving the grim weather.

    Nice video. Two things: Get rid of those smoke deflectors and improve that whistle!

    • @schoolshorts
      @schoolshorts  2 года назад +1

      The smoke deflectors really spoil the appearance of an otherwise beautiful machine - but at least they serve a purpose. I believe that the smoke problem became serious after the adoption of the double Kylchap chimney, which I also feel does nothing to enhance her looks, The whistle, I agree, is quite pathetic - an effete, ineffective thing quite out of keeping with the character of such an iconic locomotive.
      However - that's what we've got and we must live with it.
      Every good wish for 2022.

      This is a channel about railways - especially steam trains.
      You are free to hold your own beliefs on politics, religion, sexuality, gender identity, global warming, refugees, the correct response to the pandemic etc. etc. etc - but this channel is NOT the place to discuss them. That ban includes the nationalisation/privatisation of the railways which I consider a purely political matter.
      Comments on my work - whether positive or negative - are always welcome and will receive a courteous reply, but please do not introduce contentious debate on topics which fall outside the remit of the channel.
      On that note, I'll wish you a good Christmas (or what's now left of it), and hope to retain your interest in 2022.

      @@schoolshorts Thank you for your fulsome reply to my brief comment. Yes, your splendid channel does concentrate on railways and especially 'steam' trains. Sadly, the recommendation that face coverings should be worn at all times spoils my watching of them as they make my glasses 'steam' up. Therefore, we should not ignore the fact that the petty restrictions that currently blight our lives only serve to mar enjoyment of the things that we support.
