  • A little bit souly, a little bit rock and roll….From his technique, to his musical finesse - here is an example of a singer who has mastered his voice and plays to his strengths. Noel Gallagher is one of the most technically brilliant and musically discerning singers in pop/rock. Looking forward to the Oasis reunion!

I said the wrong lyrics whilst referring to a particular bit. Ooops my mistake. Don’t tell Noel.

When Noel sings the oasis songs himself, it just adds another level of meaning to them. It's great that he not only wrote great songs, but that he can express them himself.

Noel Gallagher has always been so underrated as vocalist to me, ever since mtv unplugged. He's gotten better and better over the years! His voice is very dynamic and strong, one of a kind on an acoustic. Check out this one: ruclips.net/video/O24U3x6J328/видео.html

Fantastic analysis. You have made me reconsider the nuance and subtlety in Noel's singing. While Liam's force of nature delivery has tended to overshadow his brother in this regard, it seems that Noel has greater depth and musicality to his voice.
    Good luck with your channel

I especially love the way he so easily incorporates his falsetto. The evenness throughout his range and the ease with which he is able to switch in and out is a sign of healthy technique. I recently saw him live, and his voice was in such phenomenal condition. He sounds even better now than he did in some of the live footage of him when he was younger! Rock singers who've been touring and performing back to back gigs for as many years as he has often have some degree of vocal decline by this point, whether it's age related or just general wear and tear, but he still sounds fresh as a daisy!

He's always been the better singer to me. Got better over the years. Much more gentler and melodic and not nasally.

I definitely believe Noel is the technically better singer. His range, versatility and emotional expression.
Listening to Slide Away by Liam and the acoustic version with Noel and Gem are so different. It’s a rock anthem when Liam sings it, it’s a love song when Noel sings it. It’s so much more soulful, emotive and that bit when he gets more intense with the “I don’t know, I don’t care, all I know is that I can take you there”.
Dead in the Water, Importance of Being Idle, Talk Tonight, Listen Up (MTV unplugged), If I had A Gun, Masterplan, Don’t Look Back in Anger are some of his best vocal work.

I really enjoyed this. I have always been of this belief, simply because he is able to put so much emotion into his voice! I love his voice so much!!!

  • @NorthumbriaForestry
    @NorthumbriaForestry 11 дней назад +3

Yep, would agree with that. Noel's smart. Liams has (had) "The Voice", however Noel was always & remains the better singer because exactly as you say, he's found his sweet spot through knowing the sentiment of what he's delivering because they are after all his songs, his emotion to deliver. Because of that his voice has lasted. Great video & insight.

Great analysis..... but just a point..... That the 'different' version of Wonderwall is a cover by Ryan Adams an then Noel adopted that version.... hence the muso style that you mention.... now obviously he still has to sing it... but Ryan created that version......
Any chance of some singing lessons I could do with them.... u know yer stuff....

I’ve always said Noel has developed and improved his voice with way more depth and nuance as well as better pitch, where Liam kind of peaked in the late 90s.

As a very interesting trivia fact, Noel has stated many times he changed the way he sings Wonderwall after hearing Ryan Adams' cover (ruclips.net/video/hbvpCkDleDo/видео.html). I believe it's very unique a singer/songwriter pays this kind of an homage to someone covering their song. :)

Love your analysis, never heard anyone talking about his voice in this way.
Saw Oasis back in 1996 and 2009, and Noel two times later.
I would love to hear your opinion on the evolution of Liam's voice over the years.
And about a totally different genre, if you like her, I would love to hear your opinion on Rosalía's voice. I think she's one of the best Spanish voices nowadays, along with Silvia Perez Cruz, who I totally recommend if you haven't heard her, I'd recommend starting with her David Bowie cover, The Man who sold the World, or her cover of Halleluyah.

Nice suggestions, I’ve just had a listen - I love that style of singing. I’ve been trying to learn how to do it myself, there is so much to it. I’m definitely considering a Liam video too 👌

Hey Rachel, this is the first of your videos that I’ve seen and it’s interesting to hear your perspective of something I’ve been observing myself.
Noel‘s voice has definitely evolved from 90s stuff, which was inconsistent. He definitely honed his vocal craft over the years, with lots of practice becomin a frontman. More overall control, notably pitch* and how he sounds more “comfortable”. It was cool how you described him transitioning between different voices, which speaks to that. A lot of this crosses over into mic control and how to best translate the performance into the mic. We’re picking up the on the same things but from different disciplines. I got a lot out of that. Thank you!
You mentioned potential pitch correction work on live recordings, which is something I had been wondering myself. I thought there was overuse of it on some of the earlier NGHFB studio stuff. I never put that down to lack of ability.
QUESTION. You obviously have an acute ear for vocals/music. How well would you say you can hear vocal tuning work? Or maybe a better question would be… How often do you find yourself struggling to land on whether someone’s vocal has been doctored or not? Would be intrigued to hear your perspective on what you perceive.

Great comment thank you! This pitch correction thing….it reads to me as a) a digital “feel”, or lack of detail in the voice and b) a weird, uncanny resonance - almost like “air” or a metallic really high pitched screech over everything.
Check out Wing of Pegasus channel - he shows you how to run tracks through an AI pitch monitor which visually shows the pitches “snapping to grid” vs the raw ones which never really hit the line.
I don’t listen to much new recorded music - but I do like to find new artists singing their songs live (these are often edited too so you have to be careful 😅), or older recordings before they joined a record company. There is some amazing talent and amazing voices out there currently but they are all being squashed by record companies for some weird reason. It gives young people a false sense of what the standard for singing should be which is a real shame.

There always feels overtones of meloncoly when Noel sings with an accoustic guitar. It's nice. I learnt guitar after hearing him perform MTV unplugged back in 1996. I was complely blown away by it. A small unassuming man with an accoustic guitar on a stool because Liam had a sore throat. And then ... wow. Full blown backing orchestra and everything. I think that was the moment that many Oasis fans became divided. I certainly had no idea he was that talented up until that moment. What a suprise it was. Same songs, completely different sound. Saw him play in Cardiff in July - his voice is still fantastic, better if anything. Like you say, there's never any any doubt about him hitting a note, and with power and depth, before sliding back to soft again. There's always a lot going on inside of the melody. It's very expressive, and the constant little changes draw you in, keep you hooked. Nice video.

Wouldn't surprise me though. Noel's a charming one. 🤭 Just kidding Rachel, don't worry. Great video by the way. You explained with more technicality what I've been feeling about his voice all these years. Liam's got the power, but Noel has the soul. Which always resonated with me ever since I first heard him sing a long time ago.
